joining me now dan balz and msnbc's senior editor, beth fuey. dan, let me start with you. we don't have a debt ceiling crisis, we don't have a government shutdown to sort of focus the public on just how bad it is in washington, but it was striking to us going through this six-month report card, things have -- it's like watching a slow erosion and then you look from january to now and you went oh, my god, things really did get bad. >> that was a pretty bleak report you put together, i must say as you reviewed the whole year. i think the striking thing is, you know, we started the year with only, as you say, a little bit of optimism. i think things have gone much worse than people had anticipated. the congress shut down far earlier than we thought. the relationship between the white house and the congress, which was pretty bad at the beginning of the year, has gotten worse. and i think that one of the things that we didn't touch on that's important is the absence of any serious discussion about the state of the economy. i mean we still have an economy that's in real trouble.

among those eager to hear the result, ken and beth melton. their daughter, brooke, died in a car crash. they are family says it was the result of a faulty ignition switch on her 2005 chevy cobalt. they settled initial claims against the company but asked to reopen the case, saying gm hid evidence from them. >> they're playing with numbers, that they don't count brooke's death, and she's dead because of that ignition switch. >> are you willing to settle this time? >> no. settlement is off the table. >> reporter: any amount of money? >> right. >> it's not about the money. >> so, general motors denies the allegation that it hid evidence. the investigation is expected to exonerate the current ceo, mary barra, who has repeatedly said she had no knowledge of the faulty switches until she took the top job earlier this year. she did hold several senior jobs before this top job, so the fact that it exonerates here is of importance. >> and her entire career has been spent at general motors. >> yes. >> so, a lot of the attention has been on mary barra.
