were the first to be built in world war ii and in 8938 bethlehem becomes bethlehem steel and renamed the san francisco yard. in 1940 the iron works was purchased in the southeast and it built the complex its referred to as the new yard what we was responsible for the anti aircraft. by world war ii the shipyard reached full build out and employed 10 thousand men and women working on the bay ships and in usa let and the shipyard closed after world war ii but it's the only tunly operating shipyard in the country. because of the rich history it is significant for the period 1884 to 1905 it is significant for its roles in the shipbuilding industry it's built with a architecture for the architect during the 60 year period. the district has 44 contributing resources that reflect the period and in addition they include the richest hill significant landscape feature. other 2rib89 resources include slip 4 with its cranes 14 and thirty and the slips between crane coffee park and iron fencing along 20th street and pier 68 within the bae shipyard. the district contains 10 non-containing faevenz l

the bethlehem steel workplace. basically, pressed for some white-collar jobs and whatnot. it in the process of doing all of that, i got the sense in lateca that -- this is the 1960's with a lot of racism going on and a lot of organizing going on. there was a lot of activities that were actually just kind of undermining the efforts the people in the black community was making to improve their lives. so as i went on, i said, ok, so more serious kind of organizing needs to happen to improve the conditions in the black community. i looked at all of the different organizations and the black panther party represented at least a serious attempt to start feeding the children, to start educating the population, to start organizing health care and stuff like that. so i joined and started working with them. i did not discover until later on that the chapter was organized by national security agent and police informants and so on. that kind of work. in the process of doing the kind of work, i think some of the most active people in the organization was targeted, followed around by the
