that situation here, we hear about larger clashes going on in bethlehem. young people have gone to the same streets where there have been daily confrontations in the past week. >> tensions are mounting by the day, it appears. >> these are very young boys. some are as young as 15 years old, probably the oldest i talked to was between 25-27 years old. they are fearless, frustrated, angry, not only at the occupation, but also about how things are carried out by the palestinian authorities. they say they are really, you know, i asked them more than once shouldn't you follow your studies? they said that is important but for them, the most important is to stand firm in the way of the israeli occupation. >> with plummeting popularity, is there anything that the leader of the palestinian authority, abbas can do. >> he had a speech a few nights ago, very brief where he did not speak directly to the youth. he did speak to the palestinian people. i asked them are you going to listen and they shrugged it off. after the speech, and most had gone about their lives, they

these clashes came to bethlehem. these were similar scenes in hebron and a palestinian man disguised as a journalist was shot dead after police say he stabbed a soldier. he was moderately wounded. all over the west bank there were stand offs, conflict and injuries. in occupied east jerusalem there had been tension but no major incidents as palestinians face roadblocks and numerous check points and they faced long detours. friday bears at the al aqsa mosque compound restricted to women and men over 40 was nothing new, but the mood was different. >> the security is heavy and so are the restrictions. the numbers are far fewer than normal. that's because of a new security measures. as the violence continues unabated at the same time that the u.s. security council in new york was talking about the situation here the question was still hanging in the air filled with tear gas. will the israeli employment's new security measures make any difference to the situation? andrew simmons. al jazeera. in occupied east jerusalem. >>

cnn's ben wedeman is live for us in bethlehem. on the streets where it is now dark. the sun has set in bethlehem. what's the very latest? >> reporter: the latest is that these clashes are ongoing. they're up the street from here. but we've been moved back by the israeli border police because they are about to explode two unexploded improvised explosive devices. these are homemade hand grenades out on the street so we've been moved back. these clashes have gone on since after noon day prayers. it's now about 6:30 p.m. here. this was part of this day of rage that was declared by the palestinian factions. it's the third day of rage, in fact, in the last eight days. what we've seen throughout the day is just this constant back and forth. the palestinian youth are throwing rocks, homemade hand grenades and molotov cocktails, pieces of wood. the israelis are firing back with hundreds and hundreds of canisters of tear gas, shooting rubber bullets, and it appears some live ammunition as well. four palestinians were wounded by that live am

the worse fighting was in bethlehem. tensions have risen over the past weeks simply because two protesters died on two different occasions. one of them was a 13-year-old boy. now there was also similar fighting and unrest in other areas here in ramallah in the north, and in hebron. violence that could indicate an escalation. a man dressed as a journalist with a t-shirt identifying himself as press had walked towards a soldier and tried to stab him. the soldier was slightly wounded, but the man was shot dead on the spot now this is the first time it happened in the occupied west bank and there is fear among many that this is something that signals the beginning of a way of stabbings that so far has not happened in the west bank. >> now to the u.n. where the security council has been holding an emergency session. the ambassador to the u.s. called for international help. >> we come to you today asking you to urgently intervene to end this aggression against our defenseless palestinian people. and against our clines, which a

. >> these are live pictures coming to us now from bethlehem. security has been ramped up in recent days with israeli forces on high alert after friday prayers. let's now speak to andrew simmons who joins us live from west jerusalem. andrew as we were saying, outbreaks of violence have continued across the west bank, in jerusalem, and of course at the border with gaza as well. >> yes, after a week of intense violence, these stabbings and shootings of attackers and also mutual fear across the divide, we have what is described by hamas as a day of rage. and it would appear that some of the worst violence has indeed been in gaza, where these two -- possibly three people ve been killed from what we're hearing, and at least 60 injuries, some ofhe seriously. they appear -- the demonstrators to have tried in several areas near the main crossing point, to try and get across the border into israel. they went into the buffer zone, israeli soldiers opened fire as soon as they got close to the border area, and as a result we have all of those casualties. in

and in bethlehem, israeli fired tear gas at protesters. a day of rage was called for, andrew, there seems to have been an escalation in violence in jerusalem and the occupied territories in the west bank and on the border with gaza also. >> reporter: that's right, hamas called for this day of rage after a week of killings and fear on both sides of the divide, and it was actually in gaza where some of the worst violence has happened, with those killings by israeli soldiers, who were shooting at protesters who were throwing all sorts of items at the armed forces, and also running towards the border gates at areas -- the crossing there from israel and also in various other buffer zones all along the border. there were a very large number of demonstrators and the medical ministry says that something like -- more than 60 people are injured. some of them very seriously. so we're not sure exactly what -- where the death count will end on that whole affair. and in hebron this development for the first time we have seen police reporting that -- in

but first, straight to andrew simmons who is in bethlehem. andrew what is the latest?have seen more violence despite these diplomatic overtures. >> reporter: yes, you have seen violence, certainly in hebron, with those attacks there. right across the occupied west bank and here a prolonged demonstration which involved at one stage 4 to 500. it has been pretty heavy here with masses of tear gas being fired into the crowds. and at one stage molotov cocktails being thrown. one being thrown directly at the media. you can see what happened here. the molotov cocktail was thrown through the air from this loan protester who managed to move around the security forces, and of course it landed right beside our tripod. we got out of the way, but the real issue was the amount of -- of baton rounds being fired by the army, and they were -- well, i lost count, a massive amount of baton rounds. they are basically plastic coated steel bullets, and a number of ambulances were in action taking people to hospital. the situation as i say just near the location in ramallah where ban ki-moon

the security situation there. >> well, there have been earlier in the day some clashes mainly in bethlehem following the funeral processions of a young man who died during confrontation there. there was a bigger showing than in the past days. after a few hours you had that hard-core group of young people who stated that this is something going on all over the west bank. >> this up rising, suddenly these incidents, you spoke earlier on to an university student who said it was being organized at grassroots level. they say that they are doing it united. most of them pointed out to the fact that many political factions represented in the university, but this time they really are doing it under the barn of the palestinian flag, and that they say as long a as--and they want to keep it like that. they say they've been a generation this is them taking things in their own hand. showing an unity that maybe does not exist outside of the gates of the campuses. in the president of president mahmood abbas, you could see that he was talking to them. these students have shown an unity that has not existed
