beto o'rourke is third. then down at sixth, a lot of people thought julian castro had a good debate. google made sure to point out to us that searches on julian castro spiked 4,000%, m.j., 4,000% over the course of the debate. if you are looking about improvement, it's hard to argue julian castro did not have a huge improvement during that debate. >> well, i mean, if you look at someone like julian castro, i think he was one of the candidates going into this debate with so much at stake because his candidacy has failed to take off so far, right? he has not had any momentum in the polls. he is not getting probably the kind of coverage that his campaign would like him to get. i think the fact that he seized on the issue of immigration to really make this forceful and powerful impression on voters who might be actually tuning in to exactly who he is for probably the first time last night, i think that was a really important moment for him. and, guys, one of the biggest take aways for me latz night watching this

the biggest loser, you mentioned beto o'rourke?> if you get off a debate stage and the only thing people are remembering is you breaking out in spanish out of nowhere, we can write that off, he certainly lost, embarrassed everyone in the state of texas and it is good to come out talking and speaking in spanish but not one of them with the exception of cory booker talked about specific african-american issues and that is important to me so they better start talking black a little bit as well and hopefully they will do that on the second round. >> very interesting and i wonder how beta will be able to come back from his appearance last night. let's talk about this. you did mention elizabeth warren, she did not mention donald trump once by name. 19 minutes, 24 seconds, talking about donald trump by the other candidates. was that a good move? >> i wouldn't -- you do need to talk about the issues but when you look at all the commentators i was amazed, they said they didn't talk about trump enough, should have talked about claire mccaski

beto o'rourke is an obvious one. he got into the race with expectations but his trajectory has gone south since then. he's not going to be overshadowed by a biden or a sanders or a buttigieg or a harris. there's an opportunity for a reintroduction for a beto o'rourke. john delaney, bill de blasio, julian castro, jay inslee, tim ryan in particular. these are candidates, remember, as the debate season, as this campaign progresses and we get into the fall, the criteria that they use to get into subsequent debates, it's going to increase. the thresholds for polling support, the thresholds for donations received will increase just to make the stage. candidates like ryan, inslee, gabbard, delaney, they right now need to have a breakout performance. this is probably the best opportunity they're going to get to start getting -- the difference for them, getting between 0 and 1% in the polls. which is largely what they've been doing and getting 3, 4, 5%. that's the difference the next few months to be included in future debate
