and joining us now is former congressman beto o'rourke.state and nationwide. and is about to head back out on the march. it's great to have you back on the show. tell us what you think is possible when it comes to voting rights legislation? >> i think the senate can pass the for the people act or some version of the for the people act, as joe just suggested. but failure is not an option. none other than senator joe manchin said something to that effect. i know that he believes in the right to vote for every eligible american. i know that he wants to help see this through and most importantly i know the president feels that way. he gave a blistering speech on voting rights in philadelphia a couple of weeks back. and he called this the single greatest attack on our democracy since the civil war. so we must act, move forward. but as you just suggested by showing that clip of the civil rights and voting rights advocates in the 1960s, this kind of thing doesn't happen without a push from the public. and so we're marching this week to help push

this week former congressman beto o'rourke, and religious leaders, are leading a three-day mosh through texas to spotlight the gop's attack on voting rights there. from those act, to civil disobedience on capitol hill. people are putting their bodies on the line to fight for this cause, but the same urgency needs to come from the president as well. biden talks about fighting voter suppression, but he hasn't thrown support behind the only tool that democrats seem to have to end the filibuster. he hasn't even expressed support for a carveout, suggested by congressman clyburn, that would allow an exception for some of important to democracy such as voting rights. the president's support for this would be invaluable. at this moment, scrapping the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to pass most legislation rather than 50, may by the only way to protect voting rights federally and quelling republican whims. biden is hoping the gop will come back to the table with resort morality, while their counterparts in the state attack it. there's no evidence that will happen any time before the next el

let's start where beto o'rourke left off.e in the filibuster for voting rights legislation to pass? >> it would be nice, it would make it a lot easier, a lot faster. ayman, there's not the political will. we saw clearly both senators manchin and senator sinema saying this is a no go. so in terms of where that national movement is going to happen, because it has to happen at the national level, in our state it's not going to happen. the focus i think now is on this new structure that senator manchin actually just put out, i believe, yesterday. it's modeled after the john lewis voting rights act. it's not as far reaching as the for the people act but still provides some needed guardrails. the latter is where i think the political realities will be more supportive of the passage of this. >> are you hopeful something gets done? >> i am optimistic. i'm cautiously optimistic -- >> where do you see the opportunity for it to be optimistic? >> to be very plain here, senator manchin has put forward his support for this revised structur
