betsy klein reporting for us there. betsy, thanks so much. with me now is the hill congressional reporter michael schnell. michael, good morning to you. so let's let's start in congress. and we've heard some voices around the president. is there a is there a john mccain in congress now, someone who has the bona fides who who will stand up and say, despite maybe not having the greatest influence, but we'll say, mr. president, you are wrong on this. we need to stand by and behind ukraine and zelenskyy. is there that figure on the hill? >> there's certainly a few people who could be victor. it's just a question of how loudly do they want to use their voice against trump in this political atmosphere, where he is so clearly the leader of the party? somebody like don bacon, he's a congressman from nebraska. he's a republican, serves in the house. he put out a statement on friday after that oval office clash, saying it's clear that russia is the aggressor in this situation and that ukraine is the one that needs our support and that ukraine stands fo

> chief international correspondent nick paton walsh is in kyiv and senior white house producer betsy klein is with the president in florida. so, nick, to you first, what has been the reaction in ukraine? >> i mean, there is a lot of consternation to this. i think there's a mixture of support and shock that the president, in ukraine's view, was rounded on in that way and had to defend ukraine's position to a series of mistruths. and i think there's also real fear about what this means for the u.s. ukraine relationship going forward. we have heard zelenskyy very fully talking about gratitude. that was something that vance rounded on him, saying that he hadn't shown during that particular meeting. and also now this meeting with european leaders, preceded by a one on one with the uk prime minister, keir starmer, that i think is a bid to try and piece things back together and but also possibly address a future in which u.s. support isn't really part of this anymore. hard to almost say that it's so key to ukraine's survival, and also to the concept of the transatlantic security alliance. we've h

and senior white house producer betsy klein is with the president in florida. so nick, to you first, what more are you learning about what happened at the meeting? it sounds like it was pretty short because it's over now. correct? >> yeah. so it's about an hour and 20 minutes in duration. the symbolism around it, the hugs when the prime minister came out of ten downing street, walked down the street to hug president zelenskyy. he doesn't do that normally. he doesn't hug many people. normally, it's just not something keir starmer is given to doing. but look at almost that, that that session you just played there, the sort of little question and answer or discussion backwards and forwards. you've heard all the thanks from the british people. thank you to the british people. thank you for your support, all of that. it was almost a sort of a textbook. this is the way to do on camera diplomacy. such a contrast to that fractious meeting at the white house just yesterday. and i think the british prime minister setting the tone of how he wants to conduct relations with

cnn's senior white house producer, betsy klein, is with me now. the first month and a half of trump's second term has been a whirlwind, as the white house and congressional republicans move swiftly to implement the president's agenda. so what sort of tone might we see in tuesday's speech? >> well, i think whirlwind is absolutely the right adjective, fredricka, as we prepare for the speech, we'll be watching his tone and tenor quite closely. but as you mentioned, the first six weeks of president trump's term, we have seen him expand and reimagine the use of executive authority. we have seen him transform the size and scope of the federal government, and we have seen him change the role of the u.s. in the world, as well as his approach to key alliances. but so far, we are starting to see how americans are viewing those changes he is making to the federal government in his new role as a second term, according to a brand new cnn polling out just a few hours ago, a narrow majority of americans disapprove of how trump is handling his job as president so

betsy klein, nic robertson, thanks to both of you. appreciate it. let's bring in now, matthew chance in moscow. matthew, how is this being viewed in russia? >> um, well, i mean, look, privately, the officials i spoke to were pretty gobsmacked by what they saw with this spat. um, in the, in the oval office, publicly, though, the messaging has been, um, you know, very supportive of the white house basically saying that it was president zelenskyy alone who was who was disrespectful to the u.s. leadership and basically deserve what he got. the russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, maria zakharova, uh, saying that she was surprised that trump and vance didn't slap him for the way he acted. there have been various other sort of responses along that vein. kirill dmitriev, who is an envoy of the russian president to us-russian talks. he's also the head of the the national wealth fund, sovereign wealth fund. um, he called the the scene historic. and i think that's that points to this idea in russia that this scene wasn't just about three individuals falling

betsy klein nick paton walsh, thanks to both of you. all right. let's bring in now cnn's matthew chance in moscow. matthew, how is this incident being viewed in russia? >> yeah. >> well, i mean, look. >> despite what betsy was saying there, actually, i've spoken to some russian officials and they've said they were gobsmacked at the way in which these individuals, these national leaders spoke to each other. both the american and the ukrainian leaders, not just because it was played out in public, but also because even when there's an argument, you know, it's very rarely takes these kinds of, you know, kind of angry, angry tones that we saw in in that spectacle in the oval office. that's what they say privately. publicly, of course. uh, officials that have spoken out have done so in a very supportive way for the white house, basically saying that it was president zelenskyy of ukraine alone who was disrespectful and deserved what he got. i mean, one former russian president and prime minister, dmitry medvedev, who is admittedly given to very outrageo

we're now getting reporting from my colleague betsy klein. the white house really views this as a win, as a victory for them. um, we see people like lisa murkowski, a senator from republican, senator from alaska. she said she's sick to her stomach as the administration appears to be walking away from our allies. um, what is the fallout of this? because aside from murkowski and a handful of other republicans, it does seem that a lot of republicans, at least publicly, are going along with this. >> yeah. >> i think this falls in the category of beware of what you wish for. you just might get it. i remember writing during the transition, and i think we talked about it, uh, that, you know, many of the constraints on donald trump from his first term were going to be gone in the second term. republicans in congress were not going to stand up to him on almost anything. you don't have. you didn't have mitch mcconnell and paul ryan at the center of things. he didn't feel compelled to appoint officials who were going to push back on him, particularly on
