betty yu reports. >> reporter: many people brought out flowers and candles to remember her. whether they knew her from the state park, school or her job at the san jose airport, they said she was strong. people honored the life of 19- year-old lizette cuesta. she was often in san jose doing what she loved. >> she always would be falling and getting back up. that's -- take a hard fall and get back up. >> she was a very happy person. very happy person, very friendly, kind. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's office says lizette was brutally beaten and stabbed before she was dumped near tesla road. she crawled some 100 yards before a good samaritan called 911. he got out and comforted her before paramedics arrived. >> she said she felt like she was going to die and -- i said no, you're going to fight, you're not going to lay down, you're going to be all right. as that was said, she got up. >> reporter: investigators say the last thing she was able to do was point them in the direction of her killers. an engaged couple 19-year-old daniel gross and 25-year-old melissa leona

here's kpix 5's betty yu with a warning from health experts. >> reporter: a san francisco public health officer says that in more than 20 years, he has not seen this instance of three people dying at the same time in this fashion and although the exact cause of death isn't yet known, health officials suspect fentanyl is to blame. three men died on the sidewalk outside haight-ashbury's urban school. officials say the deaths are not related to the school or the cold weather and no foul play is suspected. but fentanyl poisoning is on the rise in san francisco. >> it's very easy to overdose with fentanyl. it's more than 100 times more potent than morphine. and so you can literally die within minutes. that's how powerful it is. >> reporter: health officials say investigators found drug paraphernalia at the scene suggesting that the men were using methamphetamine or crack cocaine. fentanyl is an opioid. it's often intentionally laced with other drugs to make counterfeit products or accidentally mixed in with other drugs because fentanyl is made in a lab. it can be found in many forms and expe
