so betty friedan was a very bright, very well-educated woman. she began her own career, mostly as a reporter, and sort of got shunted as many bright women in the field did at that time into reporting on women's issues, and the making of pot roast, the knitting of sweaters. she tells it in her big book and in other forms, she started to get the sense that something was wrong and she went back to her college classmates and started interviewing them. she started interviewing other women in this supposedly idyllic suburb where she was living and she began to focus on what she called the problem that has no name. that was the malaise, the discontent, the depression she found in many women who on the surface would have appeared to have perfect lives, the same life that the culture in magazines, and television shows, were raving about. the major caveat here, the subsequent feminist critics and others have pointed to is the women she was talking about and writing about, and worrying about, were almost overwhelmingly white, upper- middle-class women. the
