and it's such an important part of the betty ford story. she has a lasting legacy that changed the lives of so many families, rescue them, in effect. can you talk about your mother, the founding of the betty ford center, what it meant to her and what it meant to so many people that you must have met in your years that you took leadership? >> well, you know, mother got sober april 1st, we did the interventionist first of 1978. and her sobriety date is actually april 7th because at the talks and that sort of thing. and we are so grateful that she accepted the advice that we gave her, which was, go get sober and go to treatment and she went to long beach and so, four years later, when she made the decision about the betty ford center, which was very young and early in her recovery to make that decision. and she came to us and she said, yeah. what do you all think about naming it the betty ford center? and all of us kids who are not bothered by that whatsoever. we said no, we are glad to continue that legacy and we're proud of what you've done

betty ford was fearless. there is a delicate balance for political wives to not rock the president's political policy boat, yet your mother stood up and there was one issue in particular i remember that was very divisive in the country, it was a constitutional amendment and your mother stood up and, in fact, traveled the country supporting the equal rights amendment back in the oval office your husband -- your father was not on board. >> no, he wasn't, and actually she was making calls from the white house to congressmen and senators up on the hill trying to get everybody behind it. i don't know if it was dick cheney or don rumsfeld, but it was one of them said to my dad once, could you ask her to tone it down just a little bit? and my dad said, no. if you would like her to tone it down, then you need to go speak to her herself. >> did they ever? >> no, of course not. so one of the things she did do is she put in a telephone line that she paid for out of her checking account so that she could make those calls

and he was very supportive of betty's efforts to create the betty ford center. of course, this couldn't last forever. age began to take its toll, and shortly after christmas in 2006, ford passed away. so it leaves a question, how should ford be remembered? there was a gallup poll taken of ford's presidency shortly after he left the white house. and these people are asked, what was president ford's greatest achievement? and people were given a number of options to choose from. and the one they chose most was no great achievement. he didn't do anything. at least nothing big. and i think this says something about how ford was remembered. ford has been remembered, i would suggest, as a caretaker president. a person who has sat in this chair behind the desk in the oval office, keeping it warm, until he was elected in his own right or someone else became president of the united states in 1976. and caretaker president whose only major act was to pardon richard nixon. i would suggest to you this is not a fair assessment. ford had to deal with a lot of issues, a myriad o

they felt the weather be good for betty and and betty thought great. i'll have my husband back finally. yet being the loyal republican being the workaholic being the politician. he was ford continued to go out a lot. he was endorsing republican candidates when stumping for them and this was hard on betty. she was continuing to abuse alcohol continuing the addiction of painkillers. and finally in 1978, there's a family intervention gerald ford himself. led the intervention to help betty. yet it's to point out. that even though he now fully understood what betty was going through. old habits died hard ford still want to be involved in politics and believe that his wife would support him if he tried to get more involved. in 1980 considered running for the presidency in his own, right? um when that fell through we considered being ronald reagan's running mate that same year. although that idea fell through as well because ford wanted more power than reagan wanted to give him. ford having decided now. i'm going to step out of politics. became it while he wa

her name was betty warren. she thought he was crazy for wanting to be involved with a divorcee, especially now that he was running for congress in a conservative district. he didn't care. he loved her, she loved him. after she got divorced, not long thereafter, they decided to get married. but ford said to her, our marriage is going to have to wait, the wedding will have to wait until the fall of 1948. didn't explain why. but the reason was simple, ford knew that if he could defeat yonkman in the republican primary, that he should be able to win the general election without any problem. the fifth district had gone democrat only once between 1920 and 1948. so if he can get past yonkman, he should be able to win the general election. well, sure enough, in an upset, won that, received national attention, ford defeated yonkman in the republican primary. afterward, married betty ford, and shortly thereafter, won the general election. and now enters a quarter century career in congress. his motto that hard work bring

betty ford i really got know well. and i must say, perhaps breaking the boundaries of professionalism, really came to love as a friend. i visited her many times at her home in the desert before president ford became very frail. and of course he died at the end of -- i think it was 2005 or 2006. but mrs. ford had a great love of history, and a love of the history of first ladies, and spoke often with her affection for pat nixon. so although between the two of them they only represent eight years in the white house, and of course in recent times, from bill clinton to george w. bush to barack obama, we have had this unusual historical currents of three consecutive president sees of eight years, last time that happens was jefferson, madison and monroe. i think pat nixon and betty ford served in the white house at a time of enormous change, and they were agents of a gentle turn towards the future. thank you very much. pat nixon and betty ford. as i was saying earlier today, people do forget about these women. you know, we look at them and it's always so easy to look at historical figures, you know, in one dimension, but we forget that a woman that was born in nevada, but really grew up and considered herself californian, pat nixon and another from michigan, betty ford, were two women who made their way, their own way, in the world. they both worked as young women, in the case of mrs. nixon, getting an education she knew was going to be the answer for her chance to be part of a larger world, beyond that of her community. both women understood in coming to the white house at the time in the women's movement understood the real rational thinking behind the idea of equal pay for equal work, and they both in quiet yet forward and progressive ways were taking some of the more radical elements of what was then thought of as the women's movement or the feminist movement and integrating them into their remarks, into the way they responded to the press and in this sort of gentle way this notion of t

forward and betty warren are married in october 1948. it was a it was an announcement that was put off for a while because he was running for congress. he didn't. he didn't want to get married until october because he wanted to handle the primary as soon as they're married. he wins the election and they're off to establish a home in washington by 1950. they have their first child michael then jack follows then steve and then by 1950 seven susan has arrived. so by 1957 they have four children at home as ford is moving up in leadership ranks and in with increasing responsibility on capitol hill the kids recall that when their dad was home that he set the briefcase aside and he was a dad to them. he took them fishing teaches the boys how to use the lawnmower how to do things around the house and takes family vacations with them. they they go on skiing trips. and back to grand rapids. they have the grandparents there in washington on occ. and so in many respects it is a typical middle-class experience except that their dad increasingly has b
