peter: steve ford, do you have a connection to the betty ford center or the gerald r. rd ford library -- gerald r. ford library in grand rapids? steven: i was a past chairman of the gerald r. ford foundation and library museum. the betty ford clinic, no. that was mom's nonprofit. when i got sober over 30 years ago, i did it outpatient. everybody things i probably went through the betty ford center but it's not like they have a family wing there or anything. i did not get a discount. i did my treatment through outpatient 30 plus years ago, so no, i am not connected with the betty ford center. peter: there are 34 presidential children alive today, and i think i'm accurate on that number. do you have any connection with any of them? steven: not really. it's not like there's a club or anything. no. no, you know, i run into the bush kids every once in a while, i run into the corridor kids -- the carter kids. at our foundation, dan's museum and library, we work very closely with the carter foundation. i know my brother, mike, has worked with one of their sons or grandsons on

did you and betty ford hav same relationship? yes, we a really good relationship. t started the jimmy and gerald ford were on the we went to sadat's funeral in september after we left the white house and that's when jimmy and gerald ford began talking. had a lot of time and and so how much each one. well, they they thought similarly and and then betty i started working with betty and we developed a really wonderful relationship. mrs. carter, there are several first ladies still living. are is there a sorority of first ladies in a sense. well, i had a good relationship with betty ford and with lady bird. as long as she was alive. but that's about it. i don't think there's never been a real we see each other at the event and at the library dedication. so in the new what new first ladies. but there's never been that, uh, closeness that, that i had with betty ford and lady bird when you were first lady, you had a weekly luncheon with your husband and would attend cabinet meetings. what was the purpose of that? well, i had a luncheon with jimmy. there were always things

, it was a taboo subject in public and a lot of awkwardness at the dinner table about all after betty ford, her interviews, you know, 60 minutes and newsweek cover stories that this country changed in the blink of an eye and then the other thing was, of course, mrs. carter was both as the first lady of georgia and as the first lady of the united states was interested in the issues of people with mental health problems, disease and struggles. and, of course, then during the carter administration, it came out that mrs. ford had these addictions, and that was the second thing. so, you know, all of a sudden, she made it possible for people, for families. think of the family. is that needed to talk about the addictions that were destroying their families. think of all the families that were changed because now there could be an honest conversation about these things. again, mrs. ford and mrs. carter, i think, found each other in that conversation, and they became very close. and that's why they go back for they always had something to work on and talk about. now the mental health issues, you kn
