[laughter] >> medsgernt years tracking down the other burglars and getting them to reveal the secret they had vowed to keep forever, the mastermind, william davodon, recently died, but he and four others are identified in medsger's book, "the burglary," and in a new documentary directed by joanna hamilton. >> we didn't notice the seemingly small event that had far reaching consequences. >> the exposure pushed congress to rein in government surveillance. it created a special court, the so-called fisa court, to issue warrants when intelligence agencies want to spy on u.s. citizens. but after 9/11, more wide-ranging surveillance was allowed. just how much the nsa's spying activities had grown was large will i unknown -- largely unknown until 2013 when contractor edward snowden leaked classified documents. please join me in welcoming betty medsger, bonnie raines, and keith forsyth.use] [applause] [applause] >> good evening. it is wonderful to be here near the home of the burglaries in the home of the investigation that was done by 200 fbi agents. in case you haven't seen him recently, you may have heard the names keith forsyth and bonnie raines and john raines. and it's especially nice to be here in this immediate area and this is the neighborhood that bill and his wife lived in uris prior to her death in 2010. including coming here for events. if you are hearing and have this enthusiasm that you know a lot about the burglaries. and so i won't rehash the details except for some things out like to say. it really began in 1970 when bill had a very powerful idea. as you move from peace organization to peace organization that year, people kept telling him that they thought that there were spies and there met. he would not believe it. he was not someone who speculated or to believe in conspiracies. as the time went on, he thought people were imagining things and peop
