i'm terrell brown for betty nguyen. this morning that powerful and dangerous snowstorm that pounded the upper midwest with snow, strong winds and subfreezing temperatures is headed east. over 2,000 airline flights have been canceled major highways closed and in some areas wind chills expected to fall 30 degrees below zero. at least four weather-related deaths reported and up to 23 inches of snow fell in parts of minnesota. cynthia bowers has more. >> reporter: first came heavy snow. enough to collapse the 9.5 acre roof of the minneapolis metrodome home of the minnesota vikings and gave way this morning, unable to stand up to the fifth heaviest snowfall in twin cities history. 17 inches in 18 hours. >> oh. >> reporter: the vikings will play the new york giants in detroit monday, but the giants were unable to get to minneapolis anyway because the airport there shut down for the first time in 19 years. roads across the region were also closed. heavy snow kept firefighters from getting to a house fire, where two people died

i'm terrell brown, in for betty nguyen. this morning, sunny california is turning more into a swamp. the biggest storm in several years dumped up to a foot of rain in just a few days. it's as much as the state usually sees over several months. forecasters say it will only get worse in the next few days. kendis gibson reports. >> reporter: relentless rains have made a major mess of southern california. more than eight inches of rain have pounded the area in less than a week, causing flooding and rock slides. 2,000 residents in the farming community of mcfarland were cleared to return home after flood threats to hundreds of homes prompted an evacuation recommendation. california highway patrol shut down a six-mile stretch of highway near the malibu coastline because of rock slides. >> it doesn't look good, especially for the month of rain that we're going to have coming in the next 48 hours or so. >> reporter: forecasters say some areas could get as much as ten more inches of rain by thursday morning. not good for areas alrea

i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. this morning officials in california are watching the skies, hoping a fifth straight day of record rain won't be one too many, the latest wave of storms started last night, the worst expected this morning. forecasters predict it could bring several more inches of rain to the water-logged state. meanwhile, more than 200 homes were evacuated last night in two los angeles suburbs. emergency workers went door to door to get people to leave. officials say those homes are in danger of being wiped out by mudslides. the governor has declared a state of emergency in six california counties and the damage isn't just in california. four homes including this one washed away in littlefield, arizona, near the utah-nevada borders. fire officials say a dozen more homes are at risk. this is the worst flooding in that region in more than five years. ben tracy has more from hard-hit southern california. >> reporter: water, water everywhere. >> the water is up past my knees. >> reporter: her living room

i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. the western part of this country cannot seem to catch a break. another monster storm pounded the region. wednesday parts of arizona were hit by rare blizzards, high winds and heavy snow created near white-out conditions. more than two feet of snow expected to accumulate in the higher elevations. but it wasn't all bad. in flagstaff, the snow didn't stop some kids and their parents from hitting the slopes for a little fun sledding down a hill. >>> earlier in the day the same system brought rain to water-logged southern california. the state is asking the federal government to declare it a major disaster area. at least one person is dead and another missing. the new storm brought more flooding and more fears of mud slides. kendis gibson reports. >> reporter: it is filthy, sticky, back-breaking work. in southern california, they're digging out from piles of mud. wednesday's storm brought heavy rain that flooded streets. >> right in the middle of a typhoon. >> reporter: and buried highways

i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. it is raining this morning in california. that is not good news for residents worried about a possible new round of flooding and damage. the latest radar map shows a new super soaker moving into the los angeles area. the same area is still drying out after getting up to a foot of rain last week. the rain fell hard on northern california tuesday. the storm also brought strong winds to the coastline near san francisco and more snow to the sierras. this new storm threatens to cause new mud slides in southern california. still cleaning up from the mess that was left behind after last week's heavy rains. sandra hughes visited one hard-hit town near san bernardino east of los angeles. >> reporter: amber morton's home in highland, california is filled with at least three feet of mud. >> we can't salvage a lot. we can't salvage anything. >> reporter: a flood caused by last week's rain storms destroyed five homes here and damaged another 73. volunteers are racing to dig out the mud before another storm, which is expected overnight. >>

betty nguyen is at the news desk with the latest headlines. >> good morning, guys.of president obama's tax deal with republicans from becoming law is the president's signature. after a contentious debate, the house easily passed the bill late last night. a majority from both parties voted for the bill. it extends the bush-era tax cuts for everyone for two years and also extends long-term unemployment benefits, cuts social security taxes and also cuts the estate tax rate from 45% to 35%. democrats tried unsuccessfully to alter the measure, but the republican leadership wander any change would kill the agreement. >> while not perfect, this is the kind of action that most americans voted for last november. >> congressman anthony weiner was a vocal critic of the president's compromise. this morning he told harry the president was outplayed. >> the republicans turned out to be, frankly, better poker players than the president. they only really wanted two things this legislative session and got them both. that was the increase in the estate tax and increase in tax cuts fo
