i'm betty nguyen. we begin in the southwest, iowa, to be specific, where surging floodwaters threaten a small town, a temporary levee is now all that stands between hamburg, iowa, and disaster. work crews have been trying to fortify the levee for days. floodwaters from the missouri river are expected to reach the barrier today and if the levee fails, hamburg could be covered by as much as ten feet of water. >> if this water hits like it's supposed to hit, it's just -- i'm sorry, it's just going to be a little town with nobody here, because all of our industry is going to be leaving, because they won't come back, if that water sets here, clear up to december like they're predicting. this town is done as far as that goes and it's just going to ruin a lot of people's lives. >> the missouri river is expected to crest at five to ten feet above flood stage, as it passes through iowa, missouri and nebraska. >>> from water now to fire. two people are being questioned about a camp fire that may have started tha

betty nguyen is standing by at the newsdesk. >> good morning.s. there are wildfires burning from east texas to southern california, but some of the worst are in arizona. this weekend high winds pushed arizona's massive wallow fire farther across the border toward the small new mexico town of luna causing fire officials to evacuate the entire community. that fire has now consumed more than 800 square miles. earlier, governor jan brewer pointed to the one bright spot in three weeks of devastation. >> the line is that there's been no loss of life either with residents or the firefighters. >> reporter: a second arizona wildfire, the monument fire near sierra vista on the mexican border has burned through 21,000 acre, destroying 44 homes and many more are threatened. at least 7,000 residents have been forced to evacuate. in texas, dozens of wildfires fueled by a record drought across the state have been burning since november. more than 3 million acres have been torched over the past eight months. officials are calling this fire extremely dangerous.

i'm betty nguyen. >>> we begin this morning with that massive wildfire in eastern arizona. it's still out of control, still growing, and forcing more evacuations. the fire has now consumed about 500 square miles near the border with new mexico. residents in eagar, arizona, were told to evacuate last night. the fire is being fanned by strong, gusty winds. you can get an idea of how big the fire is by these pictures taken from space. sandra hughes has our report. >> reporter: from the arizona/new mexico border, a gigantic plume of smoke rises above the blaze. firefighters say they've never seen anything like it in this area. already almost 3,000 people have been evacuated, 7,000 people in springerville and eagar, arizona, were on standby until tuesday evening. >> the fire is moving quickly, winds are erratic, swirling and getting into heavy fuels and crossed that line where we feel it's safe and asked the folks from eagar to move on out. >> reporter: five structures have burned and firefighters are trying to save more. >> other night we're doing another night burn and we are

i'm betty nguyen. breaking news this morning. a little more than a month after osama bin laden was killed by u.s. commandos, al qaeda has a new leader but his face is very familiar. joel brown has the latest in washington with this. good morning, joel. >> good morning, betty. the news came down from al qaeda on a website affiliate with al qaeda that osama bin laden's long time lieutenant, ayman al zawahiri, is now officially taking charge of the terror network. al zawahiri has been at bin laden's side for years as a personal adviser and international head often acting as al qaeda's spokesman. he was born in egypt, and he turns 60 next week. he warned the u.s. it's facing an international community of muslims that seeks to destroy it and its allies. his whereabouts are unknown but it's believed he's hiding somewhere along the pakistan/afghanistan border. al zawahiri has been described as the "real brains of al qaeda" and he holds a $25 million bounty on his head from the state department. >> joel brown, thank you on that latest br

good to see you, i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. >>> we begin with mother nature and a swarm of stubborn wildfires that just won't quit. wildfires big and small are burning from east texas all the way to southern california, one of the worst is the monument fire near sierra vista in southern arizona. authorities ordered another 1,700 homes to evacuate sunday as high winds wlipd the flames out of control, forcing fire crews to fall back and regroup. the monument fire had already burned 44 homes and many more are in jeopardy. at least 7,000 residents have been forced to flee, many into local shelters. >> this is how we stay until we get the news good or bad. >> reporter: in new mexico the small town of lieu in a is now in changer. president the wallow fire jumped over the arizona border last week and has gaining ground ever since and already torched nearly 800 square miles. east texas is the latest area to burn. a grass fire that started friday spread over the weekend into the fourth largest in state history. at least two homes have been destroyed. >> we ain't moving until the fir

"endeavour" touched down following a 16-day mission to the international space station. i'm manuel gallegus in for betty nguyen. >>> we have new insight into possible links between osama bin laden and pakistani officials. the "new york times" reported a cell phone captured during the raid of bin laden's compound may tie the al qaeda leader to pakistan's intelligence agency. the cell phone belonged to the terror leader's most trusted courier, the man he depended on to maintain communications with the outside world. the "new york times" reports the phone contained contacts to a militant group in pakistan that bin laden used as part of his support network. the group known as harakat ul mujahadin was a longstanding asset of isi, pakistan's intelligence service, which allowed it to operate in the country for 20 years. by tracing calls made on the phone, u.s. intelligence analysts determined the group spoke often to and may have even met with pakistani officials. if true the report would draw the clearest link yet between bin laden and the pakistani government. the question of pakistan's complicity in hiding the al qaeda leader has hung over washington and islamabad since the m

betty nguyen, cbs news, new york. >> and joining us now is cbs news legal analyst jack ford.u with us, jack. we just heard in the piece, there's this hearing today about whether or not he can obtain legal counsel through the court. why is the prosecution pushing this point? >> a couple of reasons. one is the federal system has a public defender arrangement the way the states do. and the deal is, and we all know the warnings, if you don't have an attorney, can't afford one, we'll provide one to you. but the government doesn't want to be paying for a lawyer if somebody has, as we heard whitey bulger talk about, $800,000 stashed in a wall some place. or if they have assets some place else. two things are playing out here. one is the government is saying all right, let's find out if he does have assets that somebody is sitting on that could be used to pay for his lawyer so we, the government, doesn't have to. the other is, you know, i think the prosecution is trying to get a head start on taking a look at, what other assets does he have out there? because if we do convict him her
