i'm betty nguyen. egypt's military government declared three days of mourning to begin today following the world's worst case of soccer violence since 1996. on wednesday, at least 74 people were killed and hundreds more hurt when fans rioted on the field and in the stands of a soccer stadium along egypt's mediterranean coast. this morning, many in egypt are pointing fingers at the country's military leadership. the violence started in the moments after an upset victory by the home team. fans stormed the field after they defeated egypt's top team. supporters at a home team threw rocks, bottles and fireworks. some chased rival fans and players from the field. police officers stationed at the stadium are being criticized for failing to control the crowd. this man's brother was a victim. he says the central security forces were watching everything but nobody moved a muscle. the riot was one of the worst outbreaks of violence in egypt since last year's anti-government protest that swept president hosni muba

i'm betty nguyen. congress hopes to send president obama legislation to renew the payroll tax cut by the end of the week. details of a tentative agreement to extend the tax cuts through the end of the year are being worked out today. it addresses long-term jobless benefits and doctors' pay. the agreement is a win for the president. it also takes the issue out of the election campaign. something that concerns republicans. susan mcginnis is in washington with details. good morning, susan. >> good morning, betty. this could be on the president's desk very soon. it is seen as win for the white house. it happened after republicans conceded that the cost of extending this tax break does not have to be matched by spending cuts. republicans gathered on capitol hill to hear details of a tentative agreement to extend the payroll tax cuts that's expected to be unveiled later today. >> for the most part, i would say most people are for it or at least accepting it. >> lawmakers say the deal will likely extend the t

i'm betty nguyen. gay rights advocates are celebrating another victory this morning. washington became the sechgt state to approve of same-sex marriage. the state joins new york, connecticut, massachusetts, new hampshire, ver month, and washington in allowing same-sex couples to wed. it was signed into law. they approved domestic partnership laws in 2007 and 2009 that stopped short of allowing same-sex couples to marry, but greg says now is the time for the state to recognize full marriage equality i e-mail proud that our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal. they will be equal in the great state of washington. >> gay and lesbian couples won't be able to walk down the aisle right away. the law takes effect in june. but hours after the signing, opponents signed a referendum to overturn the law. >> there are many relationships that are significant to individuals. they are entitled and encouraged to participate in them. >> republican presidential candidate rick santorum who pth

i'm betty nguyen. mitt romney used deep pockets and more aggressive tactics to swamp newt gingrich in the florida primary. heading into saturday's nevada caucuses, romney is already talking like the gop nominee as gingrich vows to fight on. it was a decisive win for romney fueled in part by female voters. romney picked up 50 delegates in florida, giving him april cbs news estimated total of 80. gingrich has 24. it takes 1144 delegates to clinch the nomination. susan mcginnis is in tampa with more on that. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning, betty. romney grabbed 46% of vote here in florida, easily beating newt gingrich and making romney officially the man to beat in the race to challenge barack obama. mitt romney's already talking like the gop nominee. >> my leadership will end the obama era and begin a new era of american prosperity. >> last night the former massachusetts governor cruised to victory in florida taking nearly half of the vote. he thanked his supporters before blasting presid

i'm betty nguyen. well, the snow started falling in colorado last night and it blizzard and winter storm warnings are in effect in denver and its surrounding areas. and when it's all over, it could be one of the top ten snow makers in the city's history. there could be up to 22 inches of snow on denver streets by saturday morning. last night, the city's public works department shifted into high gear putting nearly 200 plow trucks on the roads, including four by four pickups that will be responsible for clearing side streets. >> for this program, we have to find people that generally have desk jobs to come out and drive the plows, the small plows. >> it's not just the snow causing problems, but wind. gusts topping out at 30 miles per hour could lower visibility to zero and make driving nearly impossible. snowplows work throughout the night to clear runways at denver international airport. but before the flakes started falling, airlines had canceled nearly 200 flights. passengers scrambled to get ahead o
