betty yu is in san jose. she spoke with some of the victims. betty? >> reporter: allen, the couple who lived in this home behind me, pretty much lost everything. you can see the windows are boarded up. their entire roof collapsed. three of their cats are missing and they don't have insurance. so this arrest ended a very tough week for arson victims but for this family, rebuilding their lives won't be easy. >> it looks like some kind of a war zone. >> reporter: there is as much heart ache as there is relief in the place they used to call home since san jose arrested and charged patrick william brennan for a frightening arson spree. >> i think this person need to be put away for a long time for creating such evil acts. >> i just don't understand how anybody couldn't call this destruction. >> reporter: police don't know the motive but they are certain 48-year-old patrick william brennan was the firebug. evidence ties him to last week's massive warehouse fire. they used surveillance video, a sketch, and good old fashioned police work to track him down. >>

. >> betty yu joins us live tonight. what have you learned? >> reporter: officials just confirmed that two people died in this house fire tonight in palo alto. it happened at this house behind me where there is a white pickup truck on the driveway. by the time firefighters arrived, they tell us half this home was engulfed in flames. fire officials say they believe this fire started in the kitchen. this is a single family home. it's about 1,200 square feet. the deputy fire chief explained a little while ago why this fire was challenging for her firefighters to put out. >> we had a hard time kind of getting in where we needed to go. the home was apparently in fairly poor condition before the fire began, so the fire just enhanced that and made it worse. >> reporter: she went on to say there were a lot of items in this house including boxes and newspapers. police tonight tell us it's too early to determine a cause at this point. they also could not give us more information about those victims, but i did speak to a woman here on the scene who says

kpix 5's betty yu reports they were busy with three major fires yesterday in a house, warehouse and condo complex. >> reporter: in the span of one day, flames shot up from a townhouse complex. a giant warehouse and a house taxing the city firefighters. many hopped from battling one to the next. >> on top of that we're still running medical calls, vehicle accidents, service calls throughout the city. so crews are strung out. >> reporter: crews fought flames that shot through the roof of three townhomes. eight people are displaced, no injuries. >> i heard screaming so i came out our front balcony to see what was going on and looked out to the right and saw flames. >> reporter: hot spots still being put out at a warehouse the length of a city block. it wiped out a man's family business, vintage roof tile, owned it for 10 years. >> devastating. i probably had about a million bucks in there. and i found out i'm pretty much -- it's not insured. you can't really insure old tiles. >> reporter: dave's business was hit the hardest. a strip of nearby homes was saved thanks to firefighters who raced

as kpix 5's betty yu reports, the people most at risk are the ones you would least expect. >>> reporter: the number of patients showing up at bay area hospitals including this kaiser permanente in san jose with flu- like symptoms has jumped in just the last week. and most of them are suffering from the swine flu. the nasty virus known as swine flu outbreak h1n1 is making a comeback. the same swine flu strain is making up the ma the. >> of cases nationwide. >> there is fear because of the attention they gathered in 2009 that that particular type of flu virus isn't any more serious than the other types that we're vaccinated against. >> reporter: this year's vaccine protects against the swine flu. doctors say it causes more illness in children, young adults and healthy middle-aged people. the california department of public health says now is the time to get vaccinated if you haven't already. the flu virus lives longer in cold weather and cases usually spike during the winter travel season. >> viruses do travel from point a to point b very quickly. i would expect the cases of the flu to go
