that is where we find betty yu. she has been gathering the story and has more reports coming up tonight. we want a couple minutes, we thank you for your busy time. what is the mood on campus? >> reporter: it is very solemn this afternoon. that memorial has grown since we have been here. students and parents alike are stopping by to bring candles, balloons, and flowers. as you can see behind me. and reflect on this deadly stabbing that took jayden pienta's life. many people say they knew the two stabbing victims. others told me they wanted to come by to pay respects to a young life that was lost. many of the people that are here today say they are trying to process the violence that took place on campus. i also spoke with the mother of the second stabbing victim, 16 years old, cruz, she was extremely shaken up and upset. she had raised concerns with the school regarding the same suspect weeks before this deadly incident and the district and school has failed her and the students. cruz's mother did not elaborate on wh

betty yu has been there and she spoke with one of the teenagers involved. the school had a chance to address the conflict so did they and what would into all of this? >> reporter: that is right, the mother of the second stabbing victim, cruz said that she was at the school meeting with officials as recently as three weeks ago about another altercation and she was assured that the matter would be taken seriously. >> one thing that i do want to make clear is three weeks ago there was an incident with the person who stabbed the boys and he attempted to jump my son and a solemn. >> maria was visibly distraught, standing outside of montgomery high school. her 16-year-old son was stabbed in the hand and received stitches. the school recently alerted her to violence and tension between the older students in the freshman suspect, jayden and her son in the left on this photo and on the right in this one were best friends. >> we were not the only one who had concerns regarding safety. there were multiple parents that were involved. regarding issues. >> the district a

betty yu talked to someone who saw today's attack firsthand. >> reporter: around 4:40 p.m. on monday, a fight broke out on a bus among teenage boys and one was stabbed. officers were flagged down at stockton and sutter. rebecca was on her way to work nearby. i meanly saw a lot more cops than usual, a lot more commotion. what i did see was a young man on the ground. he seemed to be about 13, maybe 14, and he was being arrested and read his miranda rights. >> reporter: sfpd said no arrests have been made, but multiple people who may have been involved in the assault have been detained. >> i'm also a substitute teacher. a lot of young people are suffering with mental health and feeling like they don't have support in their lives. >> reporter: it grows to the transit problem. in 2021, a rise in souls on muni. a shooting left one passenger dead and another injured in the city's sunny dale neighborhood. in june of the same year, a gunman killed one person and injured another. and last month a man was caught on video throwing eggs at passengers after going on an anti-asian app. es

betty yu reports this comes as the restaurant is supposed to be celebrating its 50th anniversary. >> two burglaries in two days. first a window at the family-owned oakland barbecue restaurant, everett and jones on broad way -- broadway was smashed after 3 a.m. on monday. the thief kicked in the office door and used a power saw to get to the safe, but was unsuccessful. the crook made off with the cash box and a smaller safe before running out. around the same time the next morning another window was busted. this time the owners suspect the same burglar brought what looked like an industrial tool and even used the office's outlet to power it. he took all of the cash inside and was in and out in about a minute. >> i'm so upset. i feel like they stole from the wrong people. we are for the people. we give so much to this community. we hire those out of jail, those on welfare, students who have never had a first job. >> the burglaries happened during oakland restaurant week. talking about it moved the co-owner, nina moore, to tears. the black-owned business is celebrating their 50th annive

our betty yu talked to him about his experience in the past few years and why he should not be looked at as the enemy. >> reporter: a landlord who ended his hunger strike on tuesday is calling the alameda board of supervisor's eviction to let the eviction moratorium expire, a big victory. >> reporter: it's a moment of celebration. friends gathered around george wu who just ended a 70 hour hunger strike. he started on sunday where the board meets. [ speaking non-english ] >> so it's like he figured this was his only way to make his story heard. >> reporter: his story goes back to 2019. george owns a three-unit building in san leandro. a family stopped paying rent shortly before the pandemic and owes him $120,000. he said both parents took advantage of the system after stating they had good paying jobs on their rental application. >> so after all he thinks it is worthwhile because by doing this, the public here heard, and the supervisors heard the story, and they made the right decision today. >> reporter: george has relied on a wheelchair and the support of friends and strangers to get

betty yu was down in the peninsula today. a family who has been hit by damage over and over. betty? >> reporter: well sara, right now this entire block is without power. i'm just off el camino hill and ridgeville drive. here is what we're seeing. brewing in particular, a giant eucalyptus tree. tonight, one redwood city family says their home has been saturated on and off since the beginning of the year. >> we basically did not sleep all last night knowing there was going to be heavy rain all night. so every hour we were waking up. my husband would go and check the hallway to see if it was flooding because we didn't know if this was going to work. >> reporter: despite their efforts, water still flowed underneath the house. maria and her husband, justin, are temporarily staying at their in-law's home. >> i shot up out of bed and just saw water gushing. >> reporter: their home hasn't had a chance to dry out from sunday's storm, which flooded the bottom floor. fans are running nonstop. tuesday's high winds made matters worse. >> i gate text from my husband that a tree went down and took

our reporter betty yu checked in on him tonight at his home in oakland. i see the cast. i know he had surgery. how's he doing? >> >> reporter: all considering, he's in really good spirits, but he's in a lot of physical spain. the security guard told me he loves the work he does. he considers the residents of this oakmoor community his second family and says this attack is the most painful experience he's gone through. this is how a resident found a beloved neighborhood patrolman after he was brutally beaten by three burglars in broad daylight in oakland's oakmoor neighborhood. the 72-year-old took out his cell phone to doubt the crime in progress. >> the three of them came out and attacked me with whatever equipment they have, beat me up and it was a horrible, horrible, horrible scene. >> reporter: fearing for his life, he pleaded during the beating. one had a gun. the other had a metal rod. >> i used my hand to block my head this way and that rod hit my two wrists. that was shattered my ribs and then they kicked me to the curb. >> reporter: alex suffered two broken hand

our betty yu is joining us live from santa rosa. i know you've been talking to students last week, this week, and tonight they're really sharing their concerns. >> reporter: that's right. more than 800 parents, students, and support personnel showed up to this event center behind me for this listening session. so many people showed up, some had to stand in the back. some had to stand outside and simply listen in. this was designed to give a space to students and parents, giving them a venue to air their top concerns, including safety. we heard from several students who say they feel anxious, they're frustrated, and they're scared to go to school. they say they've felt this way for quite some time. many said that montgomery high school needs for resources, more counselors. some advocated for the return of school resource officers. others didn't feel that that was the best solution. others simply said that the district needs to have more transparency when it comes to communicating threats on campus. now, i spoke to the executive direc

the meeting is still going on, our betty yu is there, and will have more for us at 7:00. sausalito is set to become the latest bay area city to face a lawsuit from housing advocates. last month, yet the law and other groups sued 11 cities and santa clara county for not creating state-mandated housing plans. sausalito did submit a plan, but it did not comply with state guidelines, and they had to rebuy it multiple times. yimby losses the new plan still is not good enough. the pending lawsuit which has not been filed yet include unusual accusations. yimby law claims some of the sites are mostly underwater. some proposed sites include private property without the owner's consent, and the city also asked to waive environmental impact reports. the lawsuit claims this was all done to avoid what is called a builders remedy. >> as long as it is 20% affordable, the city would have to approve it. the city freaked out. so, they scrambled at the end to try to finish this process months earlier than they had planned. >> sausalito city manager told the chronicle he could not comment, h

betty yu was out there to look at how residents are dealing with the situation. >> reporter: depending where you are standing, the water can be ankle deep or up to five feet high here. more rain is forecasted through the beginning of the week. tell me why you chose to stay with your family? >> we stayed because it will cost a lot more if we leave. >> reporter: maria garcia and family are staying put for now. her parents are farm workers. recent storms flooded the strawberry fields where they work. maria interpreted for her dad. >> they're trying not to waste that much money because they haven't been to work for like two months. there is not a lot of money. with the fact that this closed down and we can't go there, so we can't really get food either. we have to keep a budget. >> reporter: santa cruz county supervisor hernandez said sunday the shelter at the fair grounds was completely full. >> it's heart breaking. for me i am thinking about recovery after this disaster, how we can get back on our feet, how we can get our economy back. our local economy is all agriculture here. >> report

betty yu has the story. >> reporter: friends and family of the victim are too distraught to speak tohe media as they process this tragedy. hikers who frequent the park say they're stunned and saddened by this accidental death. david from cupertino laced up his hiking boots as he normally does sunday evening. he read about the hiker crushed by a tree before coming out. >> i was surprised because usually the path along the trails are very well kept, and i have seldom seen fallen trees. >> reporter: authorities say the ground was saturated and muddy sunday morning on what is commonly called the pge trail. it had been raining off and on. the victim was hiking with her son and boy scouts and their parents from a sunnyvale boy scout troop. they were three and a half miles into the park when the tree fell around 10:00 a.m. >> it is very woodsy. i am not saying there isn't danger. there is definitely danger up there. but i have been hiking here for so many years, i would have never thought something like that would have happened. >> reporter: loved ones came to the parking lot to support the
