now the bfi has compiled the top ten most viewed films by region, depicting britain over the last 120 paul merton who has been involved with this project. this whole thing, the britain on film on the bfi player has been sponsored by the national lottery, which is 25 years old this year. so, yes, essentially you can tap in your postal code and the chances are you will see something from your area that may be as short a time ago as the ‘80s or may be going back even to the sort of 1900s. out of the top ten films here that have been the most viewed films in the last four years, my favourite one is tram ride through nottingham, which has had half a million viewers, from 1902. and it is the most fascinating... moving through the middle of a sort of nottingham and just seeing no motor cars, all horse—drawn vehicles, the fashions, everybody is wearing a hat, the huge skirts... it is extraordinary. history comes alive when you see this kind of footage. and obviously it is from the days when something like that was a particularly precious, it was particularly precious to record it because film

this is part of the bfi's musical season. ever seen it on the small screen. i have only ever seen it on video, before dvd, and so this is a real treat. it's a chance to be able to see it up on the big screen, of course, it was in the news when la la land was back in cinemas, because, of course, damien talked about how it had been an influence on that. and dvd this week,i like it, really warm—hearted. it doesn't that up there are some scenes we actually gasped out loud at the racism. i thought it was very,... extranet, terrifying. it is a story about some of the growing up being in love with the songs of bruce springsteen, and encountering kind of you know, 1980s racism, but finding an escape through the songs of bruce springsteen. whose songs are all about getting in cars and driving to reservoirs. what i love about it is, i'm not a huge bruce springsteen fan, but i thought it brought those songs to life in a way that made sense to me, and i did think you are absolutely right, the portrayal of the racism that the central char
