bianna golodryga picks up our coverage now. >>> hello everyone. i'm bianna golodryga. airports are scrambling to get back on schedule after an early morning glitch throws the nation's air travel into chaos. a key safety system for the faa went down forcing a nationwide ground stoup on all domestic departing flights. that's left travelers stranded in airports or trapped on board parked airliners. the ground stop is now lifted, but the backlog of flights is still jamming airports across the country. cnn correspondents and analysts have been following these developments. let's begin with adrienne broaddus. adrienne, are things get back to normal there this morning? >> reporter: hello, bianna. things are getting back to normal. travelers passing through chicago o'hare will experience delays and cancellations. if they stop at the information board, they will see boarding. that's a nice sign for folks leaving the airport. there's also other indications that there have been technology issues. here in chicago there are about 500 delayed flights and cancellations standing at 10

now, john and bianna, we have seen a significant amount of the u.s.upport for ukraine this week, both across the pond in germany as well as here in the states. just yesterday we saw ukrainian troops arriving here in the u.s. in oklahoma at fort sill for training on that all important patriot missile battery that ukraine needs so desperately to defend its skies. that is training that will take place over the course of several months. and then we've also seen the start of training at a u.s. base in germany for several hundred ukrainian forces combined arms training that will take place over several weeks. and then this week will culminate will with a meeting of the ukraine contact group, also taking place in germany, in which 50 countries and different organizations will come together to discuss the need -- the military aid that is needed in ukraine and, john and bianna, you can imagine that that conversation will center primarily on air defenses that are so critically needed as well as armored vehicles, that we are seeing an increased number of heading

i'm bianna in new york. pressure mounts for garland to appoint a special counsel to oversee an investigation into president biden's handling of classified government records. we are following this from every angle, so let's begin with cnn's evan perez. what are you learning about what we can expect to hear from the attorney general in just a few moments? >> reporter: well, bianna, we obviously know that the justice department attorney general garland are in a difficult position given the fact that we are learning still new details about these documents that the president's team says that they found now at multiple locations. the justice department is facing the decision right now whether to appoint a special counsel, whether to open a fuller investigation. we know that, at least at this point, there was an initial review that was done by the u.s. attorney in chicago. that part of the investigation is completed, and so now the decision from garland that we expect to hear from him in the next few minutes, is w

bianna. we're seeing declines in most areas when it comes to flu activity.n is not over yet. we are still seeing significant levels of flu activity and when you look at the numbers, here is where we are now. so far this season, there have been at least 24 million illnesses, 260,000 hospitalizations. and sadly, 16,000 lives lost to flu so far this season. among those deaths, 79 were in children. and that is what stands out the most to me. it is so significant when you see the deaths in children. and we know that flu infection could turn deadly quickly in our youngest kids. i spoke with a mother in virginia who told me she lost her 3-year-old daughter to flu and her daughter's symptoms progressed within 48 hours leading to mucus in her lungs and sadly that life lost. so the takeaway here, because flu activity could last all the way up to may, it is important to still get your flu vaccine if you haven't already. and, again, we're still seeing activity that we're going to watch closely in the coming months. >> stay home in your sick, take it seriously, flu could

>> reporter: well, bianna, never a rational explanation for what happened here.horities want a motive. we spoke with an old friend of the suspect. they fell out a few years ago but they had been pretty tight. this man told us there are two words that sort of sum up the personality of this suspect, hatred and distrust. apparently he hated anybody who he thought wasn't being nice to him and that included other instructors at this dance hall. they spoke evil of him. his friend said, listen, that was all in his head. he hated people to the bone. he had very few friends and very few hobbies apart from dancing. he did love to dance. we still don't know exactly why he came here and slaughtered 11 innocent people who were out enjoying the lunar new year. the 11 suspects have been named. the age range is 57 to 76. out dancing. on their lunar new year. now the suspect as well, we found out yesterday from police, is that this suspect had actually visited the police station a couple of times in early january to complain that members of his family 10, 20 years ago had committ
