bicycling. this is another great sign that our parks want to draw people to the city's. ride bicycles. california academy of sciences wanted to visitors to come by bike. restaurants, cafes, and never did see the value in drawing more people, whether it is locals or tourists writing by bike to come out to the neighborhoods. it will be number one in the nation soon on that. we're on our day. the launch of park wide is a sign of that, one more commitment. it is a commitment responding to a demand. we know more and more people want great biking conditions. as the mere mention, it has been nearly as 60% increase the people biking in the last 40 years, and that is growing. i would love to see the day where you see the front of the academy of sciences filled with by cracks in the front and filled with tiny bikes, so that -- filled bike racks in the front. so people are coming to learn about the importance of sustainability and the importance of our future fabric of our planning. but actually, riding the ride, walking the walk as well. kids see how they can integrate sustainability and environ

transit-first policy in the city's action goals. increasing bicycling with an increase in protected bike lanes would further the city's goal of cleaner air, more people taking public transit or other alternative modes of transportation. we have seen a lot of other cities around the country that have been increasing their biking infrastructure. and we have also seen it that bicycling is not only good for the environment and for help, but is actually good for business. i believe you have seen the letter of support that the mayor submitted. he points out a couple of examples where we have seen increased activity in the areas where we have calmed traffic and installed new bike lanes. we put in a parklet on divisadero that didn't -- that removed two parking spaces. we day and evening activity, by 37%. on in valencia street, where we have put in a number of new bike lanes, 65% of the merchants have said they had a positive impact on their business. we do expect that there will be an increase in activity in the park as a result of the bike lanes. i have been w

number of trips made by different transport options in the city -- we have a 60% mode for auto, 20% for transit and walking, and 5% for bicycling. that is actually pretty good for the united states, but compared to our six dozen best practice cities, it is nowhere near where it could go to be more sustainable. our goal is to bring the cars down to 30%, bring transit up to 30%, and bring in walking and bicycling to 40%. that is more in line with cities abroad in europe that are the same size as us geographically and density whys. they have met these goals. it is not out of left field. it is doable. but it takes a concerted policy changes to make this happen. what is our role within the transportation system? again, we tend to be labeled as muni, with a focus on transit. you can see these other modes that really need attention to make a complete transportation network work. some corridors work better with public transit. some work as bicycle corridors. some will never use -- will never work unless we get land use tools correct. transit is not a be all, and all for the city. in some quarters, it makes sense. others have a better v

bicycles. while we initially had a finite demographic, it has broadened to every part of the city. we've seen every demographic. mothers with children. seniors. people who claim to be disabled cannot walk very far but can ride a bicycle. we are going to see a broader application of bicycling in the city. we wanted to push them forward. here was the existing bicycle route network. we're basically seeing a more comprehensive network. we are 50% of the way there. we have completed more than half of the near-term projects. we are excited to wrap up. what do we do next? how we push the little beyond 5% and get to 15%? on taxi every charge in situations, our strategy is working on greening the taxi fleet. taxis on average drive six times more than residents. there are six times more opportunities to green our taxi fleet than the private vehicle fleet. not to say we should not do that, but in a constrained environment of resources, it is good policy to work on those flights. we support the expansion of electrical vehicle charging for the entire public. that gives you a broad overview, quit

city. it is today as of may 2011 raid of the most dangerous -- actually, both those judges of octavia and golf are rated the most dangerous bicycle junctions in the city -- both of those junctions. we have great concerns about what they are planning to do, which is essentially take those nine traffic flows and run a bus through that junction as an additional flow. we think that is dangerous. it is going to attract more pedestrians and cyclists to the area, not less. they are going to meet that group of traffic coming into the city. we do think that also, this will create significant legal exposure for mta because you are proposing to move forward with a project despite very clear public objection on the basis of safety. this is the way the junction is measured. it is very dangerous, and it does not make sense to run a bus line through it. i have worked for planning before. very dense area. you do not run buses through a very busy area. last point i'll make is if you do the traffic calculations, which i have done and filed this with the board, you will find that because of the 18 bus crossings, it is assumptions from the mta, you
