that was good news for pedestrians and bicyclists who wanted their own space again. but then a few days after that, the eastern sidewalk was shut down forcing themshare the road all over again but this time on the other side of the bridge. now, of course, some residents -- bicyclists and pedestrians are frustrated because their space is reduced by 50% so some feel it's unsafe. this time around starting january 9, the bridge crews will be working on a section of the bay trail. they are going to be focusing on the trail's turnback loop back to the western sidewalk. it should open by april 1. hopefully crews will work faster again so that they can get their space again for the bicyclists and the pedestrians again. back to you. >> it is a big problem. we were doing a little homework. i guess almost on a busy day 10,000 people will walk across the bridge and 5,000 people on bikes. so you don't want those two to bump into one another. >> reporter: it's causing some confusion every time it does -- one of the walkway closes it causes confusion because from what i have been t

the bicyclists went to the hospital. traffic on seventh street northwest approaching sherman circle has a yield seen. according to a witness, a marked d.c. police vehicle came, quote, plying into the circle -- flying into the circle, knocking over the bicyclist and sending a man in his cycle about 20 feet from the point of impact. the cycle of the was waring the helmet. the police vehicle immediately stopped and the uniformed officer driving called for him. the witness wonders why several other police vehicles show up before a fire truck or ambulance. >> he was on the radio and said the person hit and never said officer hit the person. he just said it's a person hit. i don't know who he was calling to say the person was hit. was he calling for passengers? >> reporter: two teenaged children were in the vehicle at the time of the accident and appeared to be uninjured. a spokeswoman for the department said take home vehicles can be used for personal errands. the bicyclist, who was transported to a local hospital, was descri

but you have to consider that on weekends 10,000 bicyclists -- pedestrians and 6,000 bicyclists are on the golden gate bridge at the same time. and this western walkway shut down is going to force them to share the road again. but, you know, the western walkway has been shut down before. last year they shut down the western walkway for seismic retrofit work that is finished two weeks ahead of schedule making people happy but a few days after the western walkway reopened forcing frequent users to use a walkway together again. even though bridge officials painted lines on the walkway in the past to alleviate congestion, frequent users of the bridge are still unhappy because it is frustrating. it is unsafe. and half their space is restricted. but hopefully, with this fair warning grace, a lot of the pedestrians and a lot of the bicyclists will remember that on january 9 the western walkway will be shut down and hopefully, it will reopen by april 1. >> thank you. >>> we have just one week before we toss it to weather.
