but before that, let's bring in steve kornacki at the big board. ive us the big picture here what are the races that you are watching and tracking closely today? >> michigan, we'll start there. not really races today, but today will ratify for each party in michigan the general election matchup for the united states. gary peters, the incumbent democrat, john james, the republican, james had run two years ago as well for the senate of michigan. this is notable. michigan is a very, very, very few states where republicans have said they think they have an opportunity to take a seat from the democrats. michigan one of those states that president trump won very narrowly in 2016. bad news for republicans as the polling we have been seeing coming out of michigan has shown biden solidly ahead, has shown peters solidly ahead. nonetheless, this is a matchup that republicans have been talking about. we will keep an eye on it. peters looks like he's favored at this point. we'll see if that changes. the other races today, let's see if i can get those up here on

steve kornacki is at the big board for us.through it. >> let's look here, such a big state electoral votewise too for the president. we'll show you that in a second. to set this up, you remember what happened, election night 2016. this is where it all started that night. you started to see numbers in florida, particularly the gulf coast here, trump was doing much better than expected, turnout was much higher than expected, and that when he got in florida, set the stage for what came later that night. he won it by just over a point. what are we seeing now, from trump winning it by a point, what are we seeing in the polling now, the average of the florida polls out there now, shows joe biden ahead, at 50, 4 points ahead of donald trump, a close race, but that is a lead for biden, so what has changed in florida, well, it is something hugely important in florida, and something we're seeing nationally too. it is this. senior citizens, voters over 65, in 2016, in florida, trump ran up the score, with senior citizens, he won by 17 po

if that gets within 5 points. >> steve kornacki live for us at the big board. speaking of one of the swing states, to florida, a key voting block for president trump's victory in 2016 were seniors, one county where the president notched a big win with the demographic was pacifsco county where he beat out hillary clinton by 21 points. with the coronavirus putting seniors at risk, can the president hold on to some of the voters. joining me now is nbc news' dasha burns from new port richey in florida. what are you hearing from the senior voters you've been speaking to there? >> reporter: it is turns out if you want to get seniors on a sweltering hot day in florida to talk to you about politics, you meet them at the pool, which is what we did after they did some water aerobics and swam a couple of laps. this is an area with a large population of voters over the age of 65, largely what helped trump with that large victory here. he beat mitt romney's margins near 2012 by three times. the question i came here with is does that enthusiasm hold, especially after this sta
