only has 1% trip share by bike. advantages and the benefits of cycling, very short but, which you can capitalize is the health part, the reduction of health costs because the effect of cycling on health are above expectations. it's nearly all diseases will have less risk of occurring when people have enough physical exercise and all the extra, the ideal means of physical exercise is about half an hour a day, medium-intensive exercise. so it's far better than going to the gym twice a week and then, very intensive sporting for two hours. and what is easier than having this bike trip into your daily commuting? then automatically you have your half an hour exercise and it's been shown in the managementerlands that people who sigh -- netherlands that people who cycle to work have more than people who don't. also the environment there are a lot of things you can capitalize because you don't have to invest on electric cars or transit or whatever to reduce the carbon dioxide, because the emissions of bicycle is zero. there

per person walking or biking. expanding it a little further, you can see that the two charts i showed you earlier are for walking and bikeing in the california cities they really closely match each other. it's not something the bikers are doing less than the walkers it's a common pattern here. the danish government does a good job measuring walking and bicycling in their country. i obtained a data from an author there and we see a similar pattern. less danger where there's more walking. also we can see the same pattern measure out at a country wide level, a very large scale measuring by the amount of trips or distance bicycled. the same pattern, where there's more it's safer. this might be - you are going to plan a biking trip in europe you might want to think about going to germany, denmark tore netherlands rather than portugal or spain. those are the brackets on the chart. the british government and government in in netherlands keep a good job keeping up with biking in their countries the graph here just records

to us as well in the bike plan. outreach, education, and enforcement are incredibly important. we have been incredibly fortunate to collaborate with the mta on some very great bicycle education classes. in fact, burt hill, who was here, is an amazing educator for people here in san francisco. and we are able to offer regular bicycle education classes that have really helped to make the streets safer for everyone. also, i think the enforcement peace is very important, and particularly our interest is in highlighting enforcement where it is going to help make the streets safer for everyone and where we can do that. that is something we are very much behind. the bike plan as adopted really contains all of the important items that were highlighted in the grand jury report. we would love to see those go forward through some kind of action plan that is really separate from any sort of revision to the bike plan. the by plan as it stands is really giving us everything we need to direct us -- the bike plan as it stands is re

there is a current bike to school day.engineering, to create physical improvements and to identify barriers. evaluation. doing travel service, parents surveys to see what those barriers are and how many kids are actually walking. there is a short outline about the project. they have just completed their first year. they have one more year of funding. in that, they will be adding 10 more schools. our funding begins in the 2011 school year. coalition members are sitting in the back of the room today. the department of public health is here, san francisco unified school district, san francisco bike coalition, presidio ycma, and police commission. this is very much focused on safety and teaching pedestrians bicycle safety. as i stated, funding for existing programs and in june 2011 will be coming in right around the beginning of the school year. this is a map of

the next item i need to cover with you is regarding the recent lifting of the bike injunction. as you may be aware, on august 9, mayor newsome was joined by supervisor mirkarimi, the san francisco bike coalition and the san francisco m.t.a. in launching the first san francisco bicycle plan project post the injunction. the project follows in order by the san francisco superior court that lifted its 2006 injunction which prevented us from immening -- implementing projects under the bike plan. neatly there after we announced an aggressive plan to move forward on 45 of 60 near-term bicycle projects as part of the full bicycle plan that will invest in and implement bicycle facility improvements and educational efforts, as well as innovative policies and programs to increase safe bicycling use in san francisco. the 60 near-term projects will add 31 miles to the existing 48 miles of bake lanes in the stay -- bike lanes in the city,. since the injunction was lifted last month, we have installed bike lanes on north point street from embarcadero to van ese avenue. an expected completion

we started that two years ago with smart bike with about ten locations and a hundred bikes. as of yesterday we did expand to the start of a hundred locations with a thousand bikes here in d. c. and in arlington county. >> how many people have signed up to take part in bike share? >> reporter: we just started yesterday and we've been open for about three weeks and we have about 1200 members so far. >> talk about the benefits of this. people who travel from overseas are familiar with this but why is it so important that we get something like this underway? >> well, you know, it's a great way for people to get around the city who don't own a bike or don't have a bicycle with them. you could do short trips to the store. when you're working you can go out to lunch or go to a meeting. it just gives people another option to get around town besides driving or other forms of transit. >> the bloggers have been predicting big things from that program. talk about whether it goes now. how are you going to expand it in the metro region? >> all the other jurisdictions are very interested.
