per person walking or biking. expanding it a little further, you can see that the two charts i showed you earlier are for walking and bikeing in the california cities they really closely match each other. it's not something the bikers are doing less than the walkers it's a common pattern here. the danish government does a good job measuring walking and bicycling in their country. i obtained a data from an author there and we see a similar pattern. less danger where there's more walking. also we can see the same pattern measure out at a country wide level, a very large scale measuring by the amount of trips or distance bicycled. the same pattern, where there's more it's safer. this might be - you are going to plan a biking trip in europe you might want to think about going to germany, denmark tore netherlands rather than portugal or spain. those are the brackets on the chart. the british government and government in in netherlands keep a good job keeping up with biking in their countries the graph here just records

one is of course, the people who want to bike, to rent their bike, to have it repaired. on the other hand, it's part of a social economic project, so, therefore, it's also an initiative that i find personally very important. these are people who are unemployed but get into a working program in the bicycle service points. i think with this presentation, i hope i have given you a glance of how we in brussels try to enforce the cycling patrol and i don't think i have to tell you that it's of benefit for all of us, for our health, for a better neighborhood and also -- and that's a good thing, and also firms, banks, more and more are happy to put cycling in their mobility program because it's good for their image. if you come to brussels, you will see bicycles, for instance, indicated like this is the group. this is the bank. they really take it as an advertisement and part of their policy to show they are progressive because they have their employees on the bike and i think that will help us very much in the choices we make. so i would like to just thank you for your attenti

the next item i need to cover with you is regarding the recent lifting of the bike injunction. as you may be aware, on august 9, mayor newsome was joined by supervisor mirkarimi, the san francisco bike coalition and the san francisco m.t.a. in launching the first san francisco bicycle plan project post the injunction. the project follows in order by the san francisco superior court that lifted its 2006 injunction which prevented us from immening -- implementing projects under the bike plan. neatly there after we announced an aggressive plan to move forward on 45 of 60 near-term bicycle projects as part of the full bicycle plan that will invest in and implement bicycle facility improvements and educational efforts, as well as innovative policies and programs to increase safe bicycling use in san francisco. the 60 near-term projects will add 31 miles to the existing 48 miles of bake lanes in the stay -- bike lanes in the city,. since the injunction was lifted last month, we have installed bike lanes on north point street from embarcadero to van ese avenue. an expected completion

we started that two years ago with smart bike with about ten locations and a hundred bikes. as of yesterday we did expand to the start of a hundred locations with a thousand bikes here in d. c. and in arlington county. >> how many people have signed up to take part in bike share? >> reporter: we just started yesterday and we've been open for about three weeks and we have about 1200 members so far. >> talk about the benefits of this. people who travel from overseas are familiar with this but why is it so important that we get something like this underway? >> well, you know, it's a great way for people to get around the city who don't own a bike or don't have a bicycle with them. you could do short trips to the store. when you're working you can go out to lunch or go to a meeting. it just gives people another option to get around town besides driving or other forms of transit. >> the bloggers have been predicting big things from that program. talk about whether it goes now. how are you going to expand it in the metro region? >> all the other jurisdictions are very interested.
