her only son, a drexel grad, a philly bike computer, killed on his bike by a hit and run driver. one of 11 fatalities since the beginning of 2015. >> last item in the house and i'm just roaring in tears. it's my son that's gone. i'm never going to see him again. >> reporter: the investigators got records for every philly bike crash since 2014, more than 1,500 of them. we discovered crashes spread across the city, most happening in the afternoon and evening hours. we found a clear pattern. starting in june, crashes spiked to a monthly average of more than 80, nearly three a day. that continues through summer, peaking in september, with an average of 95 crashes. we found location patterns, too. broad street shows up more often than any other street. 76 crashes in just 2 1/2 years of reports. spruce street was a close second, 63 crashes, even with its painted bike lane. sarah, head of the bicycle coalition of greater philadelphia, is now focused on one leading cause, especially for the crashes that turn deadly. >> speeding is what causes a third of the fatalities in philadelphia. >>

so, bikes come first, then automobiles. and they overlap a little bit, but bicycles really paved the way, literally, to better roads in the u.s. so, bikers formed clubs and groups and they go out in their spare time, and the bike across the countryside, and they realized that the roads in the 1880's leave something to be desired. so they form good road clubs. that eventually developed into highway systems and paved roads, so that comes out of bicycling. -- that comes out of biking. it is also these bikes that are innovation from the earlier version, which was the high wheel bicycle, where the rider basically sits on top of one big wheel with a small supporting wheel. those were ridden by men, mostly for sport and mostly to test themselves. and to test bicycles. when these come along, it really opens up biking to both men and women. that is a another one of the important stories we tell here is this was a moment in the 1880's, 1890's, where middle-class women are starting to embrace this idea of suffrage and moving outside t
