and he got bill barr to put someone in who they would said unearth the final truth. and the truth is, this report from this trump/barr era prosecutor, who stayed on the job, as you can see, two years plus in the biden president era found, quote, no political bias in how the russia probe was opened and that led to the mueller investigation. the report itself, over 300 pages and as "the new york times" put it, this report from barr's hand picked prosecutor had little new information, failed to reveal the block bester revelations trump had sought. also, to be clear, they're ending with a report and not a bunch of charges. now, the mueller investigation did have a report. it was initially under seal, but you may remember many, many trials and convictions. they don't have that here. there's no new indictments, no referrals, no evidence of improper -- so, those are the facts. now, what do you do if you're fox news, you have been in trouble for lies, but you now have another story that is not apparently what trump and the allies and maga wanted to hear? well, we're going to

the end of donald trump and bill barr's term, request to investigate the justice department is where we begin with the clash being narratives. the durham report contradicts another inspector general report already in the public atmosphere and on the record. joining us politico correspondent msnbc plittco correspondent betsy swann is here, had time to pore through the durham report. so this bill barr holdover named john durham has been working away, but with very few result, and i'm talking about this. i have it right here, actually that we're going to get to this tonight. he just released this lengthy final report. it runs about 300 pages and it's a dud. it does not uncover much of what barr, who appointed this prosecutor, and who trump who barr was trying to appease had hoped. "the new york times" put it and this just dropped in the last two hours and this is an account from the times that explained this report from durham's -- i should say bill barr's pick mr. durham, quote, the 360-page report failed to produce the blockbuster revelations including the bureau, that's the fbi, which trump and allies had suggested this prosecutor durham would find. so there it is. little new information, failed to produce blockbusters as the times puts it and all of this comes after durham lost not one, but both of the two cases he brought to trial in this probe. so this is one of those times when we have this tonight. we didn't have it until tonight. we just got it and althoug

john durham appointed by former president of the attorney general bill barr in his 300 page report deeplytical of the fbi. here's our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas tonight. >> reporter: tonight the end of a long road for special counsel john durham who was appointed by donald trump's attorney general bill barr for two years ago to dig into the origins of the fbi's russia investigation anti-trump and his campaign. the biden administration left durham in place to complete his work and in his final report, he slams the fbi. indicating they never should've lost the probe in the first place. since neither u.s. law enforcement nor the intelligence committee appears to have possessed any actual evidence of collusion. instead, durham found the bureau relied on route unanalyzed and uncreated trickle uncorroborated intelligence. leads provided or funded directly or indirectly by trump's political opponents. the so-called steele dossier, allegations prepared by former british spy christopher steele. durham found the fbi was unable to corroborate a single substantially from the dossier. t

durham was appointed by bill barr to investigate what became the mueller probe.the durham report did not find. no evidence of political bias in the fbi's key decisions and no corruption. durham's conclusion directly counters a 2019 ig report that said while the fbi did make mistakes, it was justified, concluding the fbi did so based on evidence, not political motivation. the man at the center of it all, donald trump, saying the durham report proves the fbi was out to get him. joining me now is andrew weissmann, former fbi general council who was a senior member of the mueller probe. andrew, the fbi says it has corrected the flaws in what it did in launching a full investigation of donald trump after that inspector general report in 2019. what new have we learned from the durham report? how unusual is it to spend six years -- excuse me, four years, $6 million and not recommend any indictments? >> not recommending any indictments, there's nothing -- there's no there there. that's actually the responsible thing to do. the question i have is, why it took so long. the

there was the shout-out as well to that prosecutor that bill barr tapsed, the durham report. turned out to be a lengthny op-ed that came after durham, that prosecutor, lost both cases at trial. views are free to share, but it didn't have any bombshells and didn't come with any indictments. he's 0-2 in a court dha shares his thoughts about the fbi. we take it all together, and what are we seeing here? it is bigger than any random hearing or even the final very tardy resolution of that bill barr ordered probe. it is a republican party that is facing choices. we covered these elections this week. we've heard that governor ron desantis may mull running for president. he is considering making some sort of news on that as early as next week. the republican party has choices to make, and yet it is using its power -- i'm not talking about meeting or rallies. i'm talking about the oversight power in the house to double down on conspiracy theories that are designed to try to help donald trump and continue to wage these deep state wars, and why? why is this important right now? well, if

he was appointed by trump attorney general bill barr. his assignment from bill barr was to prove that when russia launched its operation to intervene in the u.s. presidentdential election in 2016 toen try to help trump win durham was supposed to prove in thispo investigation that the f was wrong to have investigated whether the trump campaign itself was connected to what russia was doing. for four long years john durham's supposedly bombshell findings were always tantalizingly close, the damning evidence was going to come any day. it has never really worked out the way theyll hope. in sum total what john durham got out of his investigation was one guilty plea out of an fbi lawyer, an fbi employee who admitted he made a misrepresentation in a single e-mail. it should also be noted, though, that lawyer screw up was discovered not by john durham but by an entirely different investigation that had nothing to do with john durham. nevertheless, that fbi employee did plead guilty to make a misrepresentation in a single e-mail, and his punishmen

now, durham's critics, bret, have said he and bill barr, the trump attorney general who appointed himere the ones with a politically driven agenda citing a separate 2019 internal doj report concluding the investigation was, quote, justified. the fbi responding today to the report the conduct in 2016 and 2017 that special counsel durham examined was treason. the current fbi leadership already implemented dozens of corrective actions which have now been in place for some time. had those reforms been in place 2016 missteps identified in the report could have been prevented. bret, we just got a fresh statement from former president donald trump to fox news digital. i want to read part of it. he said i and much more importantly then american public have been victims of this long running and treasonous charade started by the democrats. started by comey, meaning the former fbi director. there must be a heavy from price to pay for putting our country through this. now president biden's attorney general merrick garland received the report on friday. he read it over the weekend and he decided t

shortly thereafter bill barr appointed john durham to do this investigation.here was a really important and revealing moment. in december of 2019, doj's own inspector general came out with the point that there were missteps, however, there was ample ground to open an investigation. right away john durham came out with a public statement and said i disagree with that. that was three-and-change years ago. it doesn't mean durham's findings are valid or invalid, but no surprise he's come out where he has. >> sara, obviously due ans is not part of donald trump's lexicon or the political lexicon in general. i assume that trump and his allies are going to claim complete exoneration from this report. >> this report doesn't refer to the deep state necessarily. that's not going to stop donald trump from saying the deep state was out to get him. we've also seen house judiciary chairman jim jordan saying he wants john durham to testify next week. republicans, especially jim jordan, have made a big deal about trying to investigate what they call the so-called weaponization

tell me when bill barr says he faces grave criminal exposure and the government has a strong case, what does he see? >> i envision at least two and now there's talk of a third, one involving, you know, taking it away without authority. one involving obstruction, and one potentially involving showing it to others and espionage. but to me it's the strongest case and the strongest aspect of the strongest case. and what bill barr sees is exactly this obstruction right after the point of having received the subpoena. and whether smith, by the way, phrases it in terms of three or four different acts and possibly conspiracy, by the way, depending on people like nauta where one count is sort of incidental, it's a matter of proof but not of sentence. so in very simple terms he knows at this point he must return it. he's told repeatedly at this point that he cannot keep anything that's classified. he knows he has stuff that's classified including in his desk, and he orders people -- that's the dot, dot you referred to, and everything we're talking about whether he could magically declassify only

we have to remember there would not be a durham investigation if not for then attorney general bill barr who tapped durham in may of 2019 to look at the origins of the trump/russia narrative see how it began. barr called what happened a a bomb nation and the claim that f.b.i. officials suppressed an investigation into allegations of impropriety within the clinton foundation leading up to the 2016 election. in the clinton foundation matter officials placed restrictions how those matters would be handled such that no investigative activities occurred for months leading up to the election. here is barr. >> they took this information at face value, they relied upon it. it was unvetted. things happened here that were a radical departure from how these cases are normally handled and completely incompatible with the idea it was an unbiased investigation. >> both d.o.j. and f.b.i. sources bill and dana i spoke with over the past few days know the report is problematic but says it focused on the f.b.i. and d.o.j. in 2016 and 2017 not today. >> i have to say that one of the things coming out of th
