i think people need to note history of bill belichick and this commissioner, roger goodell. e's no love lost between these two. belichick is very angry that before on the eve of super bowl xlii the last time they were in the super bowl against the giants, even that game he's talking with the league for five hours about an unsubstantiated report about taping the st. louis rams walk through before super bowl xxxvi. so that wasted five hours of his time. he's still i think very upset about that. so there's a lot going on here that is not obvious on the surface. >> and jim, i want to bring you in. you were a nfl for so long. you served as the supervisor of officials. one question for you about bill belichick's press conference, he sort of made it sound as if the officials inflate the balls. i read things you have said in the past the officials will bring things up to inflation if the balls are not properly inflated when they get them. can you clear up for us exactly what the procedure is there? >> absolutely. what happens is each equipment manager will put together 12 balls. for

bill belichick alluded to that this morning. tom can tell you more about how he likes the football than bill belichick could tell you. i think bill belichick probably knows how tom brady likes his football, but we sort of are playing a little bit of word gymnastics in this situation here. but look tom brady can stand in front of there, as you guys mentioned, aaron rodgers likes it overinflated. i think that might be a little bit in play here that the officials, they do, you know weigh the balls about two hours and 15 minutes ahead of time. and then they're given back to the team. so they're not kept in the officials' locker room there before the game time. they go back to the team. so it's easy to doctor the ball up a little bit, maybe let a little bit of the air out. if it's for brady that he has a smaller hand or he just wants that grip a little bit better so that he can get his accuracy the way he needs it to be then that's what he can do. and maybe in the past officials have turned a blind eye to it. but these are all the qu

here comes bill belichick approaching the podium.'s talk about it after. >>> all right. i'll start up by addressing the football issue here. when i came in monday morning, i was shocked to learn of the news reports about the footballs. i had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation until monday morning. i learned a lot more about this process in the last three days than i knew or had talked about it in the last 40 years i've coached in this league. i had no knowledge of the various steps involved in the game balls and the process that went through-- that happened between when they were prepared and went to the officials and went to the game. so i've learned a lot about that. i obviously understand that each team has the opportunity to prepare the balls the way they want. give them to the officials, and the game officials either approve or disapprove the balls and that really was the end of it for me. until i learned a little bit more about this the last couple days. let me just say that my personal coaching philosophy and my mentali

if you can't stand bill belichick or cannot stand the patriots and think they cheated and lied well you got it there, and if you're fed up with the story and don't think it's a big deal bill's with you there. i think the one thing, poppy, that comes back to me still on this is air pressure the weather, all of the things that bill talked about, credible and interesting even. bizarre as they were that the issue is why didn't this affect the footballs being used by the indianapolis colts? why was it only the patriots' football that had this drop in pressure and that obviously, is something we still do not know the answer to. >> it's a great question. wish you were in the room to ask that. none of the reporters that got questions in did ask that. we don't have his response to that. do you find it odd that he did this really spur of the moment very impromptu, we just learned this press conference was coming in the last hour. why do it like that? >> caller: well it sounds like without knowing, i'm not there, of course neither you or i are there, but finished up the work on this and belichick
