senator bill cassidy, a republican from louisiana and a physician for three decades, joins us now to talk about what's next. senator cassidy, thanks for joining us. appreciate it. as a physician for years, you have sponsored own replacement healthcare legislation. what in your again is working with the affordable care act and what is not? senator cassidy: the fact that people with preexisting conditions don't lose insurance is a good thing. the fact that kids stay on their parents' insurance until they are 26 -- originally a republican proposal by the way -- is a good thing. on the other hand, cost is exploding. a friend of mine and his wife, 60 and 61, their policy -- i put it on my facebook page. their policy is $39,000 a year each with 000 deductibles. whenever you hear obamacare referred to as the affordable act, you want to laugh. it's not affordable. it's unaffordable. jessica: president-elect trump seems to support some of the aca -- affordable care act, as you mentioned -- not discriminating against pre-existing conditions, keeping young people on their parents' plan. what do

senator cassidy has framed this as a compromise bill. but democrats have been critical. i don't think they like the idea of any state repealing obamacare. even if they get to keep it in their own state. senator cassidy says he has been talking to democratic senators. it is possible we might see some shifts as democrats think about what their strategy looks like. i would not expect serious movement on this in the next few months. i think it will take a lot of work for democrats to sign onto a bill that lets some states get rid of obamacare. >> democrats don't want to get rid of obamacare. republicans have been operating under this pull it out by the roots. bears, aike the three little bit of each and does that make it possibly enough? >> you may make a lot of people happier or you may make nobody happy, which is the problem. it is important to hear what leader mcconnell wants to say, orrin hatch, lamar alexander. they will be driving the train as far as obamacare appeal. -- repeal and replace it looks like. even if democrats are resistant now, i think it republicans have a

susan collins of maine and bill cassidy of louisiana are deciding to introduce the first senate replacementill, one that could be considered some might call it obamacare light. depends on your point of view. basically it allows states that like obamacare to keep it as the law of the land, or at least their land. if they don't, there are some alternatives. sean spooiser was asked today and he gave a friendly dodge saying they look forward to working with congress on this. but folks, at some point republicans will need to compromise in order to pass a replacement health care bill that can get a dozen democrats. and this one brought by a moderate republican and a conservative republican looks like, on paper, as the best possible vehicle. but again, they'll probably need a trump white house behind them to succeed. i sat down with senators cassidy and collins earlier today and began by asking them why they're not waiting for president trump to introduce his own bill first. >> this is congress's responsibility. and to truly do a repeal and replace, you're going to need 60 votes in the senate. num
