[applause] >> read is saying that our last headliner, senator bill cassidy is a member of the senate health, education, labor and pensions committee. one of the few positions in the senate in an influential voice on health care issues. welcome, senator cassidy. >> he is both. there we go. thank you for being here, senator. we appreciate it. the last 38, 72 hours have been intense up on capitol hill and let's start with this. what are the next steps for addressing the aca? >> it didn't mean that as a discouragement because i came away in her as a sign. the president very much wants a replace with repeal. he said that over and over again. he wants something done and it's clear that they are willing to do more to achieve something. first senator collins and i propose and now senator graham and i which is that you give the talking point, if you will, power back to the patient, power back to the state and she who controls the money, typically has the power if you return it to the state and to the patient, the dollars, then she has the power, patient has a power. how can we take all these

i know senator cassidy has a bill to reauthorize the flood program. it is something at members and representatives of congress have keyed in on. those conversations have been going on now. the imperative to get it reauthorize, maybe the exclamation point was provided by harvey, but we did not need it to push us in that direction. >> [inaudible] opening these shelters up to texas red -- residents and at the same time, [inaudible] still having space available. [inaudible] well, we still have some individuals out of their homes in louisiana. no doubt about that. most of them are in shelters. there is no active search and rescue going on in louisiana. there may be a few additional residents who will be displaced for some time. we will be able to handle those numbers. given the capacity we have in these large mega shelters, especially in the week -- alexandria entry port and munro, we have a lot of capacity. it only makes sense to accommodate as many people from texas as they need us to accommodate and the need really is there because individuals that are

>> i'm working with lindsey and bill cassidy and governor walker and other governors.ple, medicaid can be managed more effect of itly and efficiently than out of washington, d.c., here. pete: do you think that bill can get across the 50 vote threshold? >> it is complex, it is difficult. certainly one of the things i've been trying to promote is my amendment during the vote which we never got to, made sure members of the congress in the exact same position as our constituents. purchasing their health care plans on the obamacare exchanges without an employer contribution. that is exactly the way the law was written, the way it was debated and voted on. president obama, face it, leadership from both parties circumvented law, put themselves in the favorable position. that has to end, members of congress get serious about fixing the mess. pete: amen. ainsley: what about tax reform? democrats want 60 votes. they came up with reconciliation. so you don't really need 60, you could do it with 51 votes. do you think you get democrats and get all republicans on board? >> as i sta

we're considering the cassidy-graham bill quite a bit. it has gotten consideration.o fund the wall. they have to get serious about border security, the debt ceiling, the spending bill. there is so much we need to do here as a team but everybody got elected, every republican in this town, in the house, the senate, and indeed the white house got here in part because they vowed to repeal and replace obamacare. the president is ready to make that happen. the question is, are others? trish: apparently not. apparently not. they couldn't get it done. you run the risk tax reform wouldn't happen either. i move it forward to the midterms, getting tax reform done would help save the republicans. if they don't get it done it is not going to be pretty, and let me fast forward that a little bit. if you assume they don't get done and voted out of office and suddenly democrats are in control, you have maxine waters out there calling every day for impeachment. you will not have a whole lot of friend, are you running a serious risk, not just the republican party but the president hims

the graham-cassidy bill is getting consideration. we are hearing from governors.im for tax reform. but, you know, that's on the border issue, this is something that the president has been very, very strong and very solid on. and we do hope that members of congress in the house and the senate continue to support that because you have got folks including there in arizona, you saw the rally the other night. you have saw president trump win the state by five points over hillary clinton who was going to turn arizona blue. no. in large part, based on this issue of safety and security at the border and elsewhere. brian: but the worry is if the president doesn't back jeff flake, that you could turn the next senator could be blue if there is a primary fight, especially if john mccain decides to retire because of the nature of arizona. you know politics as well as anyone. that's a real risk. don't you think? >> well, what i think is that the democrats are defending 25 senate seats next year. the republicans are defending 8. there are 10 senate seats in states that the presi

bills last week. there's one still hanging around, by senators cassidy and graham. i wrote a story about it yesterday. do not think it a compromise solution it's more disruptive radical than the other bills so i don't see that going forward. it's a big medicaid cut and senator heller mysteriously signed on to this bill which is surprising to me.se so i don't think that's moving forward. yesterday we had an announcement from the health committee, from senator alexander, senator murray, september 4th they're holding bipartisan hearings on fixing the individual market. they're working on a very tying timeline. on august 16th, insurance companies have to submit their final insurance rates toto healthcare.gov and on september 27th have to make a decision, are we in or out27 center we selling on the marketplace, given that open enrollment is starting in november. so you're looking at a very, very small window of actually doing something, with hearings september 4th, september 27th deadline in theth future, i think the announcement of hearings is bring something comfort to
