joining me to talk about that is former assistant director of the fbi, bill gavin.erridge gave us a heads-up on this. they are checking intel terror data bases. >> what they are checking right now is all the watchlists they have plus all the intelligence mechanisms they have to look at. they are looking to see, has there been any chatter about something like this that was so unspecific that they couldn't figure out what country they were talking about? now they are looking to see if they did have this kind of chatter, they can plug it into being in spain. the other thing they are look at is if these names i'm sure are known to the law enforcement agencies, whether there is anything known to any of these intelligence agencies in the united states and worldwide. there is such a degree of cooperation today that didn't -- unfortunately didn't exist in the past. i think this is one of the main things to help all of us through all of these difficult problems. gleg * it's been reported and it's fairly reliable that our cia director gave our spanish counterparts a heads-up

let's check in with bill gavin, he is former assistant director of the fbi in new york, again, too early some are calling it terrorism, police have not officially made that designation yet, what does it sound like to you? >> it could have been an array of different things, but the driver getting out of the car and taking off, you can rule out medical things of that nature. we can assume it's a deranged individual or a terrorist. the tool of the day is the motor vehicle, this doesn't bode well for anything, it may very well lead to terrorism. in barcelona, this is a heavily pedestrian mall. some of these events have occurred before in the u.k., and the same kinds of places. we'll have to wait and see, but i wouldn't rule it out immediately. >> jon: remember a couple months back when the most popular tourist destination in new york, times square, was the site of an event like this, a car that ran over pedestrians and killed a young woman in town visiting from the midwest, that turned out to be a drunk driver who is trying to get away from police, so there is always the exception to the rul

we're going to bring in bill gavin at this point, he's joining us live on the phone, he's a a former fbi assistant director in new york city. can you give us some idea of what he can make of the situation at this point while we are waiting for more details? >> right now, there's a ton of confusion going on. two different scenes. police have to address the urgency. the other thing they have to do is start peeling the onion on the car. there's a lot of confusion going on, but i can tell you this, the law enforcement and the intelligence authorities are in direct contact with the u.s. in looking to see if there has been anything that popped up on the grid that wasn't understandable until this event occurred. the other thing that pauses me about this is the vehicle seems to be the weapon of choice now for terrorism. we have an event coming up in boston this weekend that's a spillover from charlottesville this weekend. the things people do with vehicles spawned people of like-minded who do that, they don't have to be isis folks, they have to be other terrorists and one never knows if you'
