right now for a look at your national and regional weather once again here's nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel's forecast. all right, bill. so you and me after the snow today, snow angels. >> not me. no way. i'm done. i shoveled this morning early. that's it for me. >>> talk about what's happening out west, because often the case from the weather, stormy on the east coast, it's quiet on the west. that hasn't quite been the scene. still have unsettled conditions, a storm pulled up in british columbia. weather is changing. high pressure moving in, warm front trying to make it through the middle of country. some of that warmer pacific air moving through the central u.s. nothing too frigid out there this morning. what has been amazing is the month of december. not quite done yet, but look at the rainfall totals. of course, the huge storm last week. l.a. almost up to 9 1/2 inches of rain for december. that's more than seattle who has 8 inches so far this month, and even areas like vegas picking up almost 2 inches. impressive. not a ton of rain throughout the next few days.

we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. hey, bill. >> lynn, the women standing off, the lady with the purse trying to knock the gun out of the hand and then the woman trying to beat up the guy fighting with the cop. >> athough authorities stress do not do that. it all turned out okay. >> impressive, nonetheless. >> yes. >> let's talk about what happened yesterday, lynn. we have the cold and the snow, but we had a very rare event take place in oregon state. very strange. a december tornado, not just a weak one either, this is a strong tornado, what we call an enhanced fa ju ta scale, ef 2, the scale goes from 1 to 5. it knocked a lot of roofs off. only one injury, 20 structures damaged. on the ground about one mile in oregon. you don't usually hearing about tornadoes in the pacific northwest. let's talk about the cold. this has been the story the last couple days. it's finally starting to get a little warmer out there in the central plains and the warmer air will slowly head to the eastern seaboard over the next couple days.

let's go to bill karins. good saturday morning. bill? >>> good saturday morning, everyone.the east coast, everything is clear, no stormy, snowy weather. yes, some rain to deal with in the southeast but that will be clearing out as we go throughout the day. the cloud cover will keep it cooler. all the big weather attention is on the west coast. look at our 48-hour rainfall predictions for the weekend. when you look at the chart, when you get up there past the yellow into the oranges and the reds, we are talking inches of rain. specifically, that flow of moisture coming into los angeles and up through the central mountains, that's where we could see up to five to six inches of rainfall. the highest of elevations, mostly above about 7,000 feet, we are getting heavy snow out of that. notice for once, seattle, most of this wet weather will stay to the south of you. this is rare. you just don't see extended forecast like this for lanes. a chance of rain each of the next five days. it is not going to rain the entire time. there will be a chance of rainfall. the same forecast for s

. >>> now for a look at your national and regional weather, here is nbc's meteorologist bill karins. it was, what, 87 yesterday in los angeles? >> beautiful weather. best in the entire country. the only area like that, too. i mean, even the pacific northwest had horrible weather, veronica. as we look at the radar of what happened, the rain came in, and was really concentrated on saturday and early sunday up here in the pacific northwest. we had about two to three inches, pretty widespread. also very warm, too. temperatures in the 50s, even at the high elevations. we already had the snow pack. so the rivers fill up in a hurry. still have numerous flood warnings out there. a lot of the rivers are cresting now and it will slowly improve. some towns had evacuations take place. as far as radar goes, still showers. all the heavy stuff is over with. a lot shifted down to the south. a little more concentrated around medford overnight. they're they're getting a break. today scattered showers. looks like heavy downpour, done. we can thank our pacific moisture. you can see it streamed right ons

bill karins, good morning to you. >> no pressure there.re talking earlier in the week, the possibility of a big snowstorm moving up the east coast. that's not going to happen any more. the eastern half of the country looks just fine this weekend. still a cold blast of air, but that's not going to cause any travel issues if you're flying or driving. all of our concerns are out west. we are going to have one storm after another. none of them in itself is going to be a big deal. but when we have five days in a row of this, it will be a pretty impressive event. in los angeles, you have rain in your forecast the next five days. a big batch of heavy rain is now moving into santa maria. how much rain are we expecting? the mountainous areas could pick up as much as 6 to 7 inches of rain. and at the highest of elevations, that's going to be snow. areas like mammoth and yosemite, even tahoe, they could be talking about feet of snow. maybe 5 to 10 feet, so that's crazy totals. los angeles, this is like a seattle forecast with rain on and off the next
