meteorologist bill karins is here. i guess the word of the day is jet stream. >> there's a huge storm off the west coast. it gives us one decent day. the exception up in the northwest. a little tiny storm coming up through southern british columbia bringing showers. a little snow at the high elevations. we're watching that moving down through. you can see headed towards bellingham, light rain showers for you and on the coast. this big storm winding itself up off the coastline here. there's a big, huge moisture plume all the way near hawaii up around this storm. there's a lot of moisture with it but not too much of it is going to move on shore. again, we're good today. we should be all right. you may notice high clouds increasing in areas of northern california and oregon during the day today. the expected rainfall is more towards tonight and then during the day tomorrow. and nothing too blockbuster. this is over the next 48 hours. and these darker greens are maybe about an inch of rain. and right on the oregon/washingt

. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins joins us now tracking the weather.her storm. >> the very unpopular -- >> why do you say that? >> who wants to hear about a snowstorm in the march. this morning the snowstorm is going to move across the country over the next 3 1/2, 4 days. it's already on its way. this is just the beginning of this storm, today the worst travel, north dakota and minnesota. and portions of iowa. temperatures are cold enough for snow to accumulate. winter storm watches in northern portions of virginia, including washington, d.c. and baltimore. an updated winter storm warning for the greater chicago area, this is the target zone of this storm as it makes its trek to the east coast. chicago, for all snow. lot more questions about how much snow is going to accumulate. it may mix with rain for coastal areas of virginia. this swath of snow. the white is three to six inches. widespread through minneapolis down through chicago. chicago, six to eight inches. a bull's eye near virginia. that's where the worst of the storm will be. the target time

. >>> let's go over to the weather where midweek nbc meteorologist bill karins joins us now. how's it look? >> good morning. love your location there. nice shot this morning. also waking up to a band is never a bad thing, is it? as far as the weather goes today, as you head out the door, we have clouds and showers, and that will be about it. not a lot of bad weather. high clouds move into southern california and arizona to some filtered sunshine for you. and a little weak storm is still spinning just off the coastline of oregon. that's bringing you a few showers. but that's the worst of it. you can see the showers. looks like they're weakening. through olympia, through seattle and being pushed off the coast. around portland all the way through yakima and spokane, a chance of showers. temperatures aren't that bad. you're a lot warmer than the rest of the country. lows in the 40s. l.a. to vegas to phoenix, this is where the warm air is especially in the desert area. today enjoy the nice warmth around phoenix. 86 degrees. 81 in vegas. this is not all-day rain. this is hit-and-mi

now for a look at the weather, here is bill karins.ave a dark sense of humor. >> i don't think anyone was hurt. >> no. >>> bring the umbrella with you as you head out the door. showers are moving into areas around new york city. from new york city, new york state, approaching areas of connecticut, a rainy morning commute. the heavier, steadier rains are down in virginia and north carolina. those will be moving into washington, d.c. so, many areas will pick up three quarters to an inch of rain a significant rain event that will last for the majority of the daylight hours. it will be mild. so whatever snow is left out there, there's a good chance it will be gone in the next 24 hours. minor flooding concerns for boston, where you got the heavy snow on friday. you'll lose a lot of that during the day today. otherwise cold and chilly in the northern plains. southern half of the country looking nice. >> i guess rain is better than snow. >> this time. >> thanks, bill. just ahead, justin timberlake lifts "snl" to new heights. plus ireland bald

." >>> turning now to our weather forecast, bill karins is here. getting warmer. >> we're melting the snow ever so slowly. st. louis, they're not fooling around. they're getting rid of the snow. six flags, one of the big amusement parks there on the south side of st. louis, winter wonderland with that foot of snow. they're opening up tomorrow! they are going to clear it all out and hopefully melt it away today, too, but you know, this is a big holiday, a lot of kids will be off from school this weekend, so they're trying to get things prepped and ready. good luck with that. we're dealing with another cold morning in the deep south. what else is new, just like yesterday, but it's actually not quite as bad. we're in the low 30s, but at least we're not below freezing. so, very cold in the southern half of the country, but like yesterday, with the sunshine, you'll warm it up. it's not that frigid out there. 28 in minneapolis, not really that cold in new england, so it's chilly, but it's not freezing. we're actually close to normal for this time of year

now it's time on "way too early" to get a check of the weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. t's up with weather? >> d.c. is such a tough forecast. they'll get rain over to snow. the question is when will the transition occur and how much snow will they get around the d.c. area? that snow is in the midwest. it's from minneapolis down to the quad cities of iowa, madison and wisconsin t will snow here shortly. that's where the center of the storm is. it will take three days to get off the east coast. this is how it looks during the daylight hours today. the green being where it's primarily green. the pink shows you the wintry mix, maybe sleet, snow and rain mixed in. the all-white is the snow. this is a full-blown snowstorm today. one of those days you won't want to be traveling in northern illinois, up near chicago, northern indiana. this morning especially southern wisconsin into the quad cities. later this afternoon it spreads into areas around ohio. how much snow are we talking? this will be, if it goes as i'm predicting, the biggest snowfall of the year in chicago. they hav

for more now on the weather, nbc meteorologist bill karins joins me with a look at this winter storm. >> the nation's capitol getting a late season snowstorm. no school for kids there. leapt me show you the storm. yesterday nine inches of snow in chicago. pasted the trees and everything in indianapolis and now pushed all the way to the east coast. today looks like the d.c. area, baltimore will pick up the highest snowfall amounts. possibility of six to ten inches. this is the area of concern. travel today at the airports significant delays most of the flights are already cancelled around washington, d.c. but flights in philadelphia, baltimore, new york city. snowfall amounts will be impressive. easily their biggest snowstorm of the season. we have to watch boston, providence and other areas tomorrow. as far as travel on the west coast we had our own storm. two pieces of it spinning. one batch of rain hitting up there along i-5 from portland to oregon and see the spin right there coming onshore south of eureka. snow at the highest elevations. near mount shasta bringing a chunk of rain

. >>> and bill karins is here. let's love people, bill. do you have a good weather report for us? >> no. i should just turn around and leave and go back home. i wish i was a bear and could hibernate and wait until it's spring. wait, it is spring. the bear is very confused. so is punxsutawney phil. that was a bust. let's talk about the wind chill. half the country has a whipped chill under freezing. the blue shading shows you where the temperatures are in the 30s and teens and the pink and the white is the negative numbers. almost all of the northern half of the nation is still dealing with wind chills in the 20s. here we are late march. we had snow overnight, even heavy snow at that in areas of the ozarks and into portions especially of southern missouri. now it's just a cold rain as we go through huntsville and eventually that works its way into atlanta. cool day there. heavy snow overnight on cape cod. you're going to be driving on slushy roads this morning, possibility of maybe an additional inch or two. that will be about it. even mere the great lakes, if you're in cleveland,

. >>> for the latest on the weather now, we'll go to bill karins. >> d.c. and out west of d.c. were hit hard. that big ocean storm is now cranking and affecting new england. some of the same areas hit by hurricane sandy are dealing with high tides this morning and beach erosion and large waves. it looks like a very impressive storm from outer space looking down on the satellite. d.c. was mostly a heavy, wet snow that melted when it went on the ground. so they didn't get a lot of accumulation there, but other areas did. anyone traveling to the northeast could have some experience in delays, especially boston, hartford, providence. a lot of this snow is not a big deal for new england, but for march kind of impressive. in the march we have our own storm system diving down to the south. it is just offshore here that could kick up a few showers and stray thunderstorm this afternoon. doesn't have a lot of moisture with it, but it will have some. so we are going to keep forecasts of showers in the forecast. again, these are very light amounts. and eventually some of this is actually g

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with us. tuesday. >> it is tuesday. >> i'm hoping stuff looks pretty good. >> southern cal still perfect. the northwest, significant rain event, especially for mountainous areas. minor flooding concerns. there are flood watches issued mostly for northern and northwestern sections of washington state. and this is just what we call it, just a river of warm, moist air coming all the way up from almost near hawaii and coming straight up. sometimes they call it almost like a pineapple express, although it's not really a classic case of that. all this moisture has a stream in through southern british columbia and northern washington state. that's where the jet stream is oriented. there's an upper-level low spinning off to the west. high pressure from california funnels that little flow of moisture right up through the high terrain over the cascades and the olympics. that's where we'll see the highest totals. you can already see the rain increasing. we've had some rain bellingham and northern portion

. >>> now for a look at the national weather, we have nbc meteorologist bill karins.ou had quite a reaction to the peter king's story. >> he can't box that guy. >> why not? >> it would be ugly. oh, well. lots to explain and lot to recap. north and west of d.c., you got nailed. if you were in d.c., inside the beltway, it was a rainy, wet, cold, miserable day and you didn't get the snow that you were promised. baltimore didn't get much either. i-95 east, nothing, had to be out north and west. it still was a big storm, it's continuing to cink this morning. we're okay on the jersey shore, but the most concerns with the high winds and the surf up here in the boston area, this is where we are seeing some bands of snow. the wind gusts right now between 30 miles per hour and 40 miles per hour. temperatures in massachusetts are below freezing. above freezing in rhode island. most of this happening at the end of today, in worcester, 4 to 8. little less for hartford and new york city. grassy surfaces could pick up 1 to 3 inches of snow. they'll continue to do that especially out

. >>> now for a look at your monday weather, bill karins joins us. it's a monday. do we get to restart everything? it's going to be fresh weather? >> we'd like that. >> yes. >> we had a decent weekend even in the northwest, but now the rain's moving in. it's going to be a wet week especially north of seattle. looks like we're going to get really a heavy dose of rain possibly around bellingham. that's about it for the rest. the rest of the forecast looks really nice. already you can see hints of the warm front trying to bring in the rain ahead of it. throughout the day and into the next 48 hours, it's light today and then very heavy amounts of rain especially the northern cascades. these are rough estimates. this gives you a general idea of where the heaviest rains will be focused. the warm is well off the coast. it drapes its way back to the east. and that will be moving up towards the north. now, the way the weather pattern is set up or the high pressure is set up over northern nevada and northern utah, we'll get downsloping winds in southern california, and it's

first bill karins with the forecast. >> by the way, mika, bill karins, just so you know, bill karinse weather forecast. >> oh. >> very proud. >> that's okay. bill, take it e way. go for 101. >> it's just proof that no matter what you say around here, you get to keep coming back. >> d.c. still dealing with snow falling but not accumulating. 36 degrees. we have watched some airports piling up with delays. notice d.c. area and baltimore are not seeing many delays because of the most flights are canceled. la guardia about an hour and a half. so the white on the map shows you where the snow is. line over top of i-95. we have gotten heavy amounts of snow out west. these areas here in west virginia, northern maryland and central maryland have piled up 4 to 8 inches of heavy, wet snow. we've already got 100,000 people without power. but so far the i-95 corridor has avoided that. i'm expecting the heaviest snow at about 10 a.m. to 4 pm in washington, d.c. if it debates to noon or 1:00 and it's not sticking, then we have to lower these snow totals a lot. so that's the timing for the d.c. area.

meteorologist bill karins joins me. all these political digs and sniping, i want us to be nice to each other. >> once you hear the forecast you may want to change your mind. i know you're sick and tired of this cold march like everyone else. snow storm on the way. this is going to be a big one for northern new england. you're going to have travel issues tuesday morning, all the way through tuesday night. we have blizzard mornings in effect for areas of minnesota. so it felt cold and chilly all weekend. it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone we're dealing with more winter weather. let me show you what we're dealing with now. we're trying to watch some of this moisture. sleet overnight in portions of the ohio valley. snow in the mountainous areas outside of d.c. and toward the shenandoah valley. d.c., looks like we'll have probably rain and snow mix. i don't think we'll have any problems with accumulations out here. here the d.c. radar. some of the white showing up, possibilities of snowflakes flying. the temperatures well

. >>> and now for another look at the weather, meteorologist bill karins joins us. good morning. >> busy, busy day of trying to figure out where it's going to rain and snow. complex storm system because these temperatures are just so borderline. you saw washington, d.c., it's actually been snowing pretty good over the last couple hours, but the roads and everything, it might as well be raining because temperatures are around 34 and 35 degrees. the storm will strengthen and bring down colder air from up above and the temperatures will drop. we're at 34 now. look at hagerstown, 32. 81 is a mess driving up through west virginia and virginia. plain old rain along the delmarva that will head up to jersey, philadelphia and new york city today. here's how your travel forecast looks today. snow will be ending over ohio, portions of kentucky, slowly ending in west virginia. a full fledge snowstorm. travel is not recommended. 81 through the mountainous areas and southern pennsylvania, that's where the worst of the travel will be because of the heavy, dense, wet, falling snow.
