bill karins, do you like to call those dust storms a haboob. >> that's the technical term. it is a dust storm. >> it is a funny name. >> not fun to be in. i've been in phoenix in the summertime when those roll in, everything gets coated like a film of dirt, not fun. the rains washing it away. that is if you're not dealing with any flooding. the phoenix area over the last hour and two hours really got soaked. we were under a flash flood warning in the downtown phoenix area. so be careful on the roads. there is a lot of water right now in between phoenix and flagstaff. and we'll be driving through the regions. in the phoenix area, sky harbor airport, we picked up three quarters of an inch of rain, still raining. the yellow on this map is pretty heavy downpours. the flash flooding life threatening in this region early this morning. when you wake up, our computers are estimating that somewhere between vegas and phoenix, a chance of getting upwards of 2 to 3 inches of rain. pretty rare event. i know we get some monsoonal rains, but this is excessive by your standards. a lot of t

bill karins joins us now. bill, you know, i was in california over the last three days, and the heat was up there. all the reporters were getting the call, be ready. you might have to get out there to report on the -- >> yeah. what is interesting, we had this fire we have to report on. as a whole, we vice president h -- haven't had the acreage burn. we have been lucky. let's look and show you what happened last night. of course, in cabo san lucas, that was really who took the brunt of the storm. it is still dark there. communications are very difficult in and out of the area. and, of course, when the sun comes up, we start to get the reports in, we show them to you, but it is going to be a devastating blow by all accounts. it was hit extremely hard. as far as what happened, it was about 9:45 p.m. west coast time, category 3, 125-mile-per-hour winds and the eye went right over cabo san lucas. they got the brunt of the storm. and as you can see, a wider shot of it, this storm will slowly weaken as it heads to th

nbc meteorologist bill karins is joining me now with more. bill, this is a crucial next 12 hours here as people are headed home or trying to. >> a lot of people still having fun before they travel home. the biggest danger is going to be lightning. already this year we've had 21 fatalities from lightning strikes across this country. 18 of them, by the way, have been males, three have been female. the general theme, it's a little cheesy, but you hear it roar, you get indoors. that's pretty much the bottom line. lightning can travel as much as five to ten miles outside of a thunderstorm and people have been struck in perfect sunlight away from a storm. if you can hear it, that means you're close enough to get struck. as far as today goes, a lot of the lightning still continues in areas of kansas. it's a very wet morning across areas of wisconsin and central and southern portions of missouri. looks like it's going to be a cloudy, light rain event for you this morning in st. louis, not severe storms. this is summertime stuff. it is hot, it is humi

right now nbc meteorologist bill karins -- >> huge fire. it hasn't burned too many structures, a few. but the size of the fire, just incredible. the rain is moving to the northwest. that's good. we have a change in the weather pattern advertised for a while. it is a rainy morning commute for you from the eugene area to portland up to seattle. that's a solid shield of rain that's moved through. it will turn more showery as we go throughout the afternoon. you can see how that storm system cranked offshore. that front will push onshore. some of the rain is trying to push into northern california. so that's good. we'll take it where we can get it. you can see the expected rainfall prediction. it does show as much as an inch possible there in northern california. we may get some showery weather down around san francisco. but we're not expecting a lot of wet weather in the central portion of california. thursday forecast, the rainy weather is was, especially in the morning, seattle, portland, medford, everywhere in between. as far as southern cal

they're nice. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with more on hurricane odile. have you seen some images? >> we're just getting a lot of firsthand reports. we haven't had a lot of pictures which kind of tells you if you're not getting the images, things may be kind of bad. the direct landfall of the eye was right into the resort area of cabo san lucas. the local newspaper reporter there is now saying that there are injuries from flying debris. there are poles, lights, traffic signals, roofs down all over the city. water tanks were ripped off their base. there's a fire at the hotel. they were hit by a major category 3 hurricane with a direct eye landfall. i think the pictures will be a lot worse that n a lot of us ar expecting. this was the image at 9:45 p.m. winds were at 125. it's only dropped to 115. so it's still a very strong, devastating storm as it's moving right up through the baja peninsula. eventually it will weaken and rain itself out. some of this moisture is expected to make it into the desert southwest. we're not sure exactly how much at this point.

keeping meteorologists busy like bill karins with our forecast and's mid-atlantic storms coming in, tooasn't a great beach weekend, especially the southeast coast and florida, rain, water choppy. the biggest concern is heading out the door getting drenk chedn the areas of north carolina, outer banks, eventually norfolk and virginia beach. along charleston to myrtle beach, a rainy morning for you. not severe. not talking flooding, but going throughout today, tonight and continuing to rain into tomorrow, that's when we start to watch the water accumulating up to four inches possible in eastern norm carolina. we could get a little rain in d.c., philly and new york, maybe showers. not the heavy rain like the coast and continue to watch the heavy rain and flash flood threat. any life-threatening weather, likely it occurs in arizona or southern utah with hear rains and flash flooding. for your monday, the worst weather found along coastal mid-atlantic areas with cooler temperatures. really, the only hot spots, the deep south. texas is hot and steamy along with louisiana. >> can go into septem

>>> now much closer to home, it is time to look at the national weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. good morning to you. >> fall is here. >> fall is here. >> and just like that, in the west, with one beautiful warm day yesterday, and now we're watching the storm approaching. this is a big storm, one of the biggest ones we have seen. look on the satellite, just spinning there, very mature storm force winds with it and it could possibly get to hurricane force winds. that's a very impressive storm system and that is going to cause our big pattern change in the west. it is good for fire fighting efforts. we're not going to watch the hot dry weather in the west like we have been seeing. moist southwest flow moving through. seattle has hours at this moment. a few radar echoes being picked up in oregon. look at the three-day rainfall totals, this is what we're waiting for. it has been a dry september and now we get the rain. not today so much in oregon. showers today seattle and portland. heavier rain comes tonight. that's when the front moves through. with that, we'll see the gusty winds

. >>> bill karins is here with a look at the weather.'m not weather for fall. >> fall into winter, you mean? >> yeah. >> people in the midwest that are, like, what is going on? i mean, it snowed three days in a row in calgary. and that cold air is heading south. we did have some severe weather yesterday. there's still some showers and rain. kentucky and tennessee, it's an umbrella day for you. look at the cold air. it is now 33 degrees in rapid city. and it's now turned from rain to snow. that's in south dakota. it's not like we're talking the mountains of montana. and the cold air, it's in the 40s now throughout much of the state of minnesota and wisconsin. 52 in chicago. and there's the radar. the green is the rain. the white is the snow. in the black hills and right around rapid city this morning. today in montana, it's only going to be 44 degrees for a high. in the east, we are watching showers and thunderstorms. there could be some minor problems. and for the east coast, all that cool air comes our way. not 40s and 50s, but it will

meteorologist filling in for bill karins, remains on a little vaca. what are we watching today? >> the weekend is here. >> thankfully. >> officially the last weekend of summer. fall will be here early next week. we're still talking quite a bit of wet weather across sections of the southwest. moisture from mexico across southeastern new mexico right into west taxes. mo texas. one to two inches localized amounts up to five inches. the flash flood threat continues into the weekend from new mexico to texas. today a beautiful one in the northeast back across the midwest. on the cool side across the northeast. boston, sunshine highs in the 50s across the deep south, florida continues to see thunderstorms especially in the afternoon. l.a., a bit of drizzle in the morning. gradual clearing in the afternoon with temperatures in the 70s. on saturday, there will be a system coming into the midwest that will produce thunderstorms in chicago. warming up in chicagoland on saturday. but in of those strong thunderstorms could be a problem. heading into saturday afternoon. taking a quick peek at

we do have nbc meteorologist bill karins here. it's friday. >> yeah, everyone is always happy with the weekend forecast. it's a big football weekend. nfl season kicked off last night, as you mentioned, and we're looking very nice in the west. it looks warm, actually, two too. if you are going to be doing anything outdoors, we still have our hurricane out there just off the baja of california. the hurricane warnings do go on to land, but the wind so far hasn't been that high, so cab your san lucas is doing okay xshgs we'll keep an eye on it, and it looks like the storm is going to parallel and then weaken as it heads northward. we already have high surf advisories in effect for some of the south facing beaches in southern california, some large waves from the storm should eventually make it to the north, and it looks like some of the rain should go into arizona and especially new mexico, but it does not look like any beneficial rains or anything of significance is going to make it into l.a. some of our computers maybe think las veg

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here. >> the leaves are green. >> this is crazy. this is a wacky september. >> it snowed last night in denver. i know. >> what's coming up next? >> i know. a heat wave for the west. try to wrap your head around that. look at yesterday's high temperature map. that tells the store are ary. it was 100 in phoenix, high temperature was 41 in casper, wyoming, that's about -- that's almost 60 degrees difference between those two locations. so the heat is moving in the opposite direction as the cold air. the cold air is coming down from canada and heat is expanding in the west northward. so this is just a weather pattern we're getting into this weekend. unfortunately, kind of the weather pattern we have been in for the last year. so the heat is going to be building and along with it warm, low humidity, very light breeze, but that's enough for red flag warnings from seattle all the way to the medford area. and that will be pretty much all weekend long, the fire danger will be kind of high. look at los angeles, easily mid to upper 90s through

. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins has your national forecast. >> good morning. >> he joins us this morning. hi! >> hail was very impressive yesterday. colorado was the place to see it, too. people actually had to get their shovels out of their car to get rid of some of this hail. it wasn't that it was so huge. this is centennial, colorado. there was some windshields that were smashed, but i mean, some of the pictures of people shoveling their cars out from hail was a little ridiculous. so, that storm that moved through the colorado and new mexico areas yesterday is now moving up into the dakotas and nebraska. it will bring a chance of some severe weather today, late-day thunderstorms, slight risk of severe storms for areas of northeastern nebraska and eastern half, pretty much, of south dakota. the other story is florida. i mean, can you get any more rain? this september, the rainfall total's off the charts. 18 inches of rain in daytona beach, a foot of rain in melbourne, almost a foot in orlando and tampa. i mean, it's been raining day after day after day down there in the sunshin

and nbc meteorologist bill karins is here. >> you love summer too. >> i do. i am not -- >> your favorite season. that's pretty smart. looks like some areas will be warmer than they were, maybe enduring some of the summer season. but not the case in the west. we're starting off this morning with temperatures over the weekend that were very warm. it felt like summer, had an incredibly warm, one of the warmest summers ever recorded for many areas of the west. a lot of it associated with the drought. september, extremely dry from l.a. to san francisco. even to the northwest, september has been pretty dry. that's about to change. we have one frontal system that is right along the coast. and then as we go through the day tomorrow, new storm system will move in. a little more active weather pattern is beginning, especially for the northwest in the days ahead. we have a little weak system trying to move through utah this morning with flooding in areas of new mexico. even some evacuations on some rivers there near carlsbad. in the next five days, the bulk of the wet w

bill karins has the weather. bill? >> amazing stretch over the labor day holiday weekend.hreat. these chasers were looking at that storm and nearly got hit by lightning. that lightning strike was 20 feet in front of them. one of them was slightly injured and dazed by that strike. now we turn to kansas. there, we had actually a report of a tornado. it was a nighttime tornado. watch as the lightning -- you could barely see the middle of the screen when the lightning flash goes off, you could see it a little more clearly there. thankfully, that didn't do too much damage. where are we right now? we are watching strong storms in areas of oklahoma. tulsa, you have a chance to get these strong storms. as joe mentioned, it's so humid out there. we have a lot of energy, moisture available. we're going to get more storms today. the strongest of them, 15 million people could be impacted from pittsburgh up to state college, columbus, cincinnati to louisville. that's the target zone this afternoon for the strongest storms. did i mention how hot it's going to be with this humidity? we c

nbc meteorologist bill karins joins me live from new york. ll, good morning. >> good morning. >> we should be wondering who should be looking out for that severe weather today. it seems to be everywhere. >> yeah. so many storms it's so humid. you get it every day down there in florida. and in miami area. all the way up-and-down the east coast it's humid and even toward the midwest. we had a lot of severe weather yesterday. eight tornados were reported. most were on the border of kansas and oklahoma. a few in northern michigan. as far as today goes, the area of greatest concern is in the yellow shading. 11 million people at risk of severe storms today. it include areas like syracuse, new york, pittsburgh to charleston, and a sliver of extreme eastern kentucky. the biggest threat is not going to be tornados today. it's going to be damaging wind with the storms and the lying thi -- lightning is a huge threat. a lot of lightning. we had another fatality. someone swimming in pennsylvania. i think we're up to 21 fatalities from lightning this year.
