let's get a check on your weather with bill karins. good morning, bill. >> good morning.me interesting pictures from colorado. we -- no injuries were reported. no deaths. we like showing you pictures of amazing weather phenomenons. we had a lot of hail and lightning reported. a lot of flash flooding overnight in kansas but also problems. you can see the car flipped over. we did get some damage and that structure didn't do so well. we did see a couple of tornadoes. there was one large one out in a open area. this one was shot from a distance. let's show you what we're dealing with on the radar. all the problems in kansas thing. the heaviest rains out around topeka and manhattan kansas and flash flood warnings widespread along interstate 70. that's your travel trouble spot of the day. that's shifting south throughout the morning. the other problems we're watching is for the most part the lightning has been pretty minimized. no not too bad with the lightning problems. the other areas of concern are the heavy rain and thunderstorms as we go throughout the later portions of th

. >>> time for a look at the weather and here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. good morning, bill. >> tropical storm bill went down to a tropical depression yesterday, but actually caused more problems as a depression than as a landfall. these pictures out of texas. we had a couple of flash flood emergencies in texas, one was in ardmore, oklahoma. so bad flooding late last night we watch bands of very heavy rain. we're not done it's still being tracked as a tropical depression 25-mile-per-hour winds, the winds aren't an issue. it's just who sets up with the heavy rain. it made landfall through victoria. heavy rain moved through houston two days ago, there are still heavy thunderstorms from houst ton lufkin. there are a couple of isolated flash flood warnings to the north of dallas and east of oklahoma city. still areas of heavy rain it's a matter of who gets the thunderstorms. computers pinpointing a widespread two to four inches. if you get the training of the thunderstorms, we could get as much as five to six inches of rain. it will drift towards the ohio valle

nbc meteorologist bill karins has today's forecast and hopefully it's a little bit drier for people out there. >> the red river area is a little better. we're still going to see large hail and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. i had a hail picture sent into the national weather service in chicago that's incredible. the softball-sized hail fell in gundy, illinois yesterday. pretty amazing stuff. let's talk about the jet stream pattern where we are. why we're having this weather pattern the way it is high pressure is in the southeast. the upper-level low that was over california has drifted towards the four corners region and that will be responsible for a lot of the bad weather over the next couple of days. as we watch the storms continuing to be in areas around nebraska up through iowa and also in wisconsin. i mentioned the heat will be impressive here washington, d.c. 93 today. raleigh, 95 on saturday. the heat is going to be confined to the southeast. still very warm around the memphis area but cooling off in kansas city. also st. louis is a little bit cooler and in the northwest

. >>> let's get a check on your weather now with meteorologist bill karins.hot few days ahead. >> in the west going to be incredible, like off the charts hottest some ever have are seen maybe decades in some cases. not in the east though. there's a change in the weather pattern as we head through end of june and july. going to cool off the great lakes. all hot weather here in the west. we've talked like the drought like two to three years it seems. these temperatures unheard of. in montana, 100 sunday. this stuff is unheard of. think about the firefighters out there on the front lines of fires that are now starting to form. they're afraid of more forming this weekend. then the contrast to that, usually typical when one side of the country is hot, the other is cool. that's the case. boston lucky to hit 70 this upcoming weekend. new york city in 60s and 70s. there's areas of heavy rain. a lot of flooding concerns across missouri especially intera state 70. some portions of the highway are almost impassable because of heavy roads. that's by far the worst in the

meteorologist bill karins is here with the tuesday forecast. >> the pictures from china are pretty incredible. let's talk about what problems lie ahead. some of the worst weather here is in north earn montana. we do have show er activity, and it's rather cool. if you look like it cool and show er, enjoy this. it looks like warm weather is heading the way, and it's the 80s in many spots that it's the 60s today with some show ers. the central plains is where we could see the isolated tornados and wind damage and large hail. about one and a half million people in the area of that. here is the good news now that we're in june. dallas is going see dry weather for the next five days. this could go out further than this. this is the first 90 degree day of the season. we're getting dry and things are beginning to improve. the forecast over the entire region and oklahoma had horrible weather too. the whole region looks dry. june forecast weather for many people in the country and the northeast south and somewhere in between and southern california and the coast deal being the low clouds. i don't think

. >>> now for a look at the weather, here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> good morning. happy monday. >> it is. a tale of extremes from the east coast to the west coast especially the northeast and the northwest. this is the weather pattern we had for the last two winters and now it resurfaced in the middle of summer. the effects are different. instead of snow and instead of being dry it is brutally hot in areas of the west. that's been the set up and this weekend we were off the charts in some sports here in the northwest. as far as the boston area goes we were only 59 degrees for the high temperature on sunday. boise was 110. that's 51 degrees warmer in boise than boston. these were all time june high records. redding was 101 and salt lake city 102. a lot of daily record highs but a couple of all time june hottest temperatures were achieved. it's not like the heat completely breaks. we stay above 100 in boise through wednesday. it's not going anywhere any time soon. the forecast is the only rain is chicago a little bit down through indiana kentucky, and along the gulf

. >> let's get a check on your weather from meteorologist bill karins. >> busy week ahead for me. ll be watching the gulf. this will turn into tropical storm bill t won't become a hurricane. very, very unlikely. a tropical storm even in june heading over soggy soil of texas and oklahoma and into missouri and even illinois could pose huge problems with flooding especially on the river. it's trying to develop. it's really not going to get to be a big, huge hurricane. not concerned with storm surge, winds, rain anything. it's a rain issue with this tropical storm. at least one of my computers says landfall should be somewhere between victoria corpus christi and houston. a lot of heavy rain along with it, of course, with the tropical system. estimating near the landfall anywhere between 4 to 5" locally could even be as high as 8 to 9" of rain over an area that's already had a lot of rain this spring. here is the problem. big blue h is an area of high pressure providing the southeast, protecting you, but also baking you in the sun. and around that high pressure we call it the ring of fi

. >>> let's get a check with our meteorologist and fighter bill karins. >> i'm a lover not a fighter. amazing pictures of hail in illinois. sometimes hail get caught in updrafts, grow and get bigger and bigger. this was four and a half inches. that's how large the hailstorm was. that's softball-sized hail that fell in someone's yard. imagine seeing that. that would put a huge hole in the windshield. that wasn't widespread. that was the biggest one they could find. that was illinois yesterday. a lot of rain in the country. kansas to iowa getting drenched. we're getting a lot of heavy rain from des moines southward. kansas city still dry this hour. another hour or two, you'll have to deal with rain in the commute. 29 million at risk of severe weather. includes chicago once again, detroit, areas of kansas city des moines wichita. the area of orange is where we could see enhanced risk where maybe one, two or three tornados late today. that's the ames des moines back down to st. joseph. in addition of thunderstorms, we'll get heavy rain. yellow one inch orange two inches. there's heavy rai

meteorologist bill karins is here with the latest on that. >>> it looks like our wild fire season finallyked in. up until this point they actually were kind of tame. that's changing in a hurry, especially in alaska. as far as the radar goes this morning, severe storms. they've been racing across south dakota. it's been moving at 75 miles per hour. sioux falls had an 85 miles per hour wind gust. it's like the equivalent of a weak torpid and now roaring towardly ly lecross and waterloo iowa. after that line is done we'll get another round of thunderstorms. we have a large area of the great lakes enhanced risk. there could be a few tornados. if we get tornados most likely southern wisconsin, possibly there in the great lakes and the line of stomps will race all the way to the east coast. we have the severe weather out there. possibility of tornados today, and then the heat. the two corners continue to be the worse. could be 100 in charlotte, north carolina. easily well above 100 from phoenix to the desert southwest. unfortunately for the next couple of should be this time of year. as i menti

bill karins said today is the calm before the severe weather week ahead. >> flooding hopefully not too many zoos. if we get to that point we're in trouble. good morning. we're watching the gulf of mexico. a serious flood problem from texas to missouri illinois possibly up into the ohio valley too. the storm itself is going to be weak. it's not going to be a huge storm it's not going to turn into a hurricane or anything. unfortunately the path of the storm takes up to texas and toward oklahoma. those are two areas that don't need anymore raney time soon. that's what they're going to get. our computers are estimating we'll take it into sometime tuesday afternoon in between houston and corpus christi likely as a tropical storm if possible. if anything the wind won't cause any problems. it will head north from there. our computers are estimating possibility anywhere from 4 to 5 inches of rain throughout the area. right along the path we'll easily get another 3 to 6 maybe more. high pressure over the southeast providing them with 100-degree temperatures over the next couple of days. it's al

let's turn to our tuesday forecast here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> the heat's the story and a little bit of rain from blanca. we are trying to bring the moisture to the southwest. we've had some downpours over new mexico. it looks impressive, but a lot of this is virga, precipitation that evaporates. the air so dry, it falls from the clouds but is not making it to the ground. there are a few areas that will see showers and downpours, especially higher elevation areas, some of the hills north of l.a. could get some rain during the day today. i don't expect a lot in l.a. itself or in san diego. and our computers are barely spitting out any rainfall in the precipitation, this is the range of rain at the bottom down here. a couple of spots on the rim north of phoenix and a couple of spots north of l.a. possibly could get a half-inch to an inch. the jet stream has retreated to the north. we had record highs yesterday in areas like medford, a lot of spots were in the 100s, we're going to see very warm conditions. the central plains and up in the northwest today. the temperatures o

bill karins has much more on what we can expect. >> we have a landfalling tropical system. bad things are about to happen if not happening already. there's one piece of good news at least for the houston area where the huge population center, the storm has trended a little further towards the west. it's now making more of a v-line for victoria. this is just to the south of port lavaca. bay city to victoria elcampo, and just to the west side of houston, the heaviest rain. see the shield of rain the bright yellows? this is torrential rain. that's going to come onshore in the day today. that's where the worst flooding will be. a pretty unpopulated area. a lot of small towns which those people are going to struggle with the storm, but a letter better forecast for the houston area. there could be isolated tornadoes during the day today. very common with the outside feeder erer bands of the storms as they come onshore. typically, they're weak but you don't want it to hit your house. let me time it out. we're getting landfall in the next couple hours. by 4:00 p.m. the storm will b

bill karins has the latest on the storm's track. >> dangerous storm. only three weeks ago, we had the horrible and deadly flooding in texas and we have a situation where we could easily get another 6 to 12 inches on this soaked soil of east texas. and that's the concern. we're not concerned with the storm surge. could be around 2 to 3 feet at landfall. winds could be maybe 50 or 60-mile-per-hour gusts. but it's this bulk of rain that has to come up into texas over the next couple of days and that is where the problem will be. across the coast, up towards dallas by about 1:00 p.m. notice the winds die down to just a remnant low by this point and it tracks back to the ohio valley. this is probably the most soaked areas of our country and that's the exact path that this storm is going to take. how much rainfall is possible with this? latest computer estimates are 8 to 10 inches at the high end. but, again, we don't know yet quite where the training is going to be. but the potential is for 4 to 8 widespread, up towards to 8 to 10. that's why we have flood

but first, here's bill karins with a check on the forecast. bill?> mika and joe, tropical storm bill did make land fall in texas. still moving through the lone star state. it's been an underachiever. we have had some problems some significant flooding and a lot of water in areas of texas. fwhaut but that water receded. the storm itself is now located near waco, texas. it is heading to the dallas-ft. worth area. that's where the worst morning commute will be and where the worst weather will be. flash flood watches go all the way up into the ohio valley. heaviest rains near waco, texas. we still have a chance of isolated tornadoes. that tornado watch goes until about 8:00 a.m. this morning. and as far as the heavy rain it's moving up i-35 in between waco and is now arriving in the dallas-ft. worth area. i also expect significant airport delays out of the airport there. how much rain expected next 48 hours? anywhere between three to six inches with isolated totals up to possibly eight inches. notice the computers are hinting at the band of heavy rain l

joining me now is nbc meteorologist bill karins. bill, what's happening today?solated tornadoes. this time we're leaving the east coast and heading back to the midwest. from sioux falls to omaha, but especially this area is the best chance we'll see a squall. a line of thunderstorms yesterday rolling right through that region really strong winds later today. that's where the damage risk is really high. it does include chicago. 10:00, maybe 11:00 p.m. we could still watch these storms going to indiana. a major event for that area of the country. the other issue. they've had a ton of rain in this area of the country, including illinois, including iowa. we have flash flood warnings issued for this area. already seen heavy rain this morning, then we'll get thunderstorms later. our computer has estimated anywhere from 4 to 5 inches isolated near the quad cities and the illinois river where we already have flood warnings. that would be bad news and tomorrow, jose we'll also watch severe weather for 1900 people cincinnati louisville all included. we went from a tornado

nbc meteorologist bill karins joins me now. bill, what are we seeing for the people in that region? how far do we forecast that people are going to be effected? >> millions of people are going to be effected. how many actually see the defs stating flooding is the question andrea. we had a horrible spring for rain in this area. the soil is about as saturated as it gets. all aft rivers are at their bank fulls. now this tropical storm going to move inland and over land for the next five days and it will flood along its path. to what degree it floods will be determined by how long it stays in certain areas and if you get the training of the storm. the center of the storm is now probably only about two to three miles off the texas coast, so pretty much making land fall. it doesn't have an eye like a big hurricane. what does matter is this feeder band to the north. this is what we were afraid was going to be over the houston area but it has set up just to the south of there. orange coloring. that's who has a good chance of picking up six to 12 inches of rain today. houston is dry right no

nbc meteorologist bill karins joins me now. bill, that's a scary shot. >> it's not often you see a squad car in a sinkhole. the guy got out safely that was good to here. jose, we had the severe weather we showed you yesterday, there was a lot of hail. i think we have pictures of the hail that fell in the denver area it was enough to cover the streets. some of that is baseball-sized hail. that's window-shattering hail i call that. we'll see more of that today and all the severe weather into the weekend will be in the central plains. we're doing okay right now. we're quiet as is typical for this time of day. there's no storms as of now. slight risk of severe weather for four million people. the denver to pueblo i-25 corridor then back up to caspar. i don't think we'll see a ton of tornados but we'll get that large hail. a bigger severe weather threat on saturday. three million people at risk lincoln to home ha. a chance that we could get flash flooding in this area. they've had rain over this past week now to blanca. the storm wea

let's get the latest on where bill is heading from next from bill karins. >> good morning, as you know sometimes these storms and hurricanes can overachieve and sometimes they under achieve. to this point we're under achieving and that is fantastic. 3 to 6 inches of rainfall but we're not done yet. we have to track a large area of heavy rain do you the dallas ft. worth area today then tulsa tomorrow. then after that the storm kind of weakens as it drifts towards st. louis. the yellows is torrential rain where you pick up a quick inch in an hour and that is centered over ft. worth, two-hour delays at the dallas airports right now. and a wider view shows there's still streams of storms coming up from the south. in between corpus christi and houston, still a chance of flash flooding during the day today. we're not completely done with the storm even farther down south. how about rain are we getting, computers estimate a widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain. tulsa could pick up 4 to 8 inches of rain. that's the spot i'm worried about tomorrow morning and by the time we get to the weekend, what

i want to bring in meteorologist bill karins. >> there is a chance of tornadoes.. storm center has just released two storm watches. one covers all of central new england, including boston, oyster bay, all the way to yonkers. and a huge central area watchbox including pennsylvania all the way to allentown. that's until 7:00 p.m. what they didn't do was issue any tornado watches. i don't think in the short term tornadoes are the likely storm mode we're going to see. but we still have to watch the hudson valley areas of western mass connecticut and northern new jersey. if the sun comes out in those areas and heats it up after the initial round of clouds goes through, then we could get tornadic storms. that's the wild card we have to watch later today. here's the map that shows you the 45 million. the higher up on the scale, the worse damage you would expect. right now we went from marginal to slight. this includes new york city philadelphia boston washington d.c. wind damage would be the primary storm mode we're afraid of with isolated tornadoes. here's the tornado t

. >>> first, bill karins with a check on the forecast. >> good thing this storm is coming onshore, becausetronger. winds up to 60 miles per hour. that's only about 16 miles per hour lower than hurricane status. this will be moving onshore shortly between corpus christi and the calgalveston area. in elcampo, that area looks to get the heaviest rain. rain shield is huge. notice the west side is dry. typical, and we're going to watch a ton of rain on the eastern portion of the storm that will include the houston area back up toward dallas. here's the timing. as we go through 2:00 p.m. today, storm will be onshore, heavy bands of rain houston to victoria, san antonio is on the dry side austin does look to get wet from this. then we're going to track the storm this evening over texas and early tomorrow morning, very near the dallas-ft. worth area. tomorrow morning's rush hour torrential rain and a lot of water on the roads in dallas and ft. worth, and the rainfall totals have the chance to be epic. this, of course, is an estimate from our computers, but it shows the possibility down here of 14

fill bill karins with a check on the forecast. >> yesterday's storms in the northeast left people almostr high wind gusts throughout the region. let me show you the pictures. one of the hardest hit areas, southern portions of new jersey widespread winds up to 75 miles per hour. that's almost hurricane strength gusts and they did some significant damage. it was not a tornado. these were straight line winds with a very strong line of storms as it rolled through. a lot of cleanup to be done today. let me take you to what the concern is today. northeast, you get your day of cleanup, no problems at all in this region for weather during the day today. all of the problems will be out there in the midwest, that's where we'll have the strongest storms. it does look like areas like chicago back through illinois will be dealing with stormy weather and it looks like this region will have a cool weekend. storms through valentine, nebraska and iowa these are not severe. later this afternoon we expect stronger storms 20 million people in the slight risk area. waterloo down through central illinois, may

bill cairns isbill karins is here with the forecast. >> a great, great summer bill cairns. >> not a great summer. washington state, yesterday, this time, a dozen firefighters had the impossible task of fighting this blaze the sleepy hollow fire. this one burned 24 hour structures and a bunch of homes. you see what remain not much there in the background as far as the west goes here's a map that shows the active fires, alaska is on fire. that's one of the worst fire seasons they've had. numerous blazes and a couple big ones there in oregon and walk state and it has been unbelievably hot. boise is going to set their record for the hottest june they've ever recorded going over 100 years. they're going to break their previous record by 2 degrees. that's unheard of in the climate world. the west has been sizzling to say the least. numerous sites above 100 degrees. areas like sacramento will be 108 degrees today. that's phoenix-type temperatures in the summer. here's your outlook for july. today being the last day of june still looking much above normal in the west a. little above normal in the

meteorologist bail karins is tracking the storm. what are you looking for, bill? >> this is a rare event to have a storm this strong, this early the season. this is the second or third one we've had in areas of the west pacific. the storm looks impressive on satellite imagery. it peaked early last night, overnight it weakened slightly. the storm will start moving and heading towards the baja ben nins -- peninsula. it will goo up to category four tomorrow. that's a serious storm. by the time it gets up near la paz and cabo san lucas, it should weaken significantly. colder waters and upper level winds won't be as favorable and that's why we think it will be a tropical storm but it's possible if you have plans down the cabo san lucas as you go throughout the weekend, you could deal with a tropical storm. not a hurricane most likely but gusty winds and large waves. computer models take it somewhere near baja california. the other is the cool chilly weather. rainy weather hasn't been good beach weather in days in areas of the carolinas and virginia. so that area is str
