bill karins, what's going on in the weather? we talked about the election forecast, which is great, by the way, for tuesday. >> no excuse not to vote. >> exactly. let me get you into what we're dealing with today. not a lot of horrible weather. if you're in western new york, this is the rain that delayed the world series for a brief period last night. it's now moving to western and upstate new york. this will slowly progress throughout the northeast. it's not going to cause flooding problems but definitely umbrella weather everywhere from scranton towards binghamton. areas further towards the south, it will be hit and mis. here's the timing from 7:00 a.m. as we go throughout the afternoon, notice the southern portion, not a lot. the noon hour, all the heavy rain is mostly in the northern half of new england. just a few showers here throughout west virginia and areas of the mid-atlantic. not a lot of wet weather for you there. today's record highs continue. still 85 in new orleans. still at 82 in atlanta. day after day of record

for more on this let's bring in meteorologist bill karins. let's talk about these winds, the fires, tornados even in november. >> late season tornado outbreak. we had a report of 27 tornados last night, many of them happened after dark, and a couple happened in the middle of the night. those are the ones that people are sleeping, they don't have a lot of warning. they are woken out of bed and these are some of the pictures we're getting. this is a small town in jackson county, extreme northeastern alabama, a little small community town. this is like the main plaza and shopping area, completely destroyed. we heard about a baptist church there completely destroyed. this is a separate picture from cole bert county and this is what remains of a house. you see a house that looks like this, these weren't weak tornados. some of these tornados appear to have been strong and we'll see many more homes destroyed when we get day break and see more of these pictures. as far as the tornado watch goes, everywhere here still in pink, we should be ending the

nbc meteorologist bill karins joins me now. bill, in a lot of ways, this would seem like the perfect storm. these heavy winds, a drought down south like we haven't seen in these parts in some time as well. >> exactly. we deal with the west for so many years and this moved into the south. we had a lot of fires over the last month. this is the fire map as of yesterday here in the mountains of north carolina and a couple in tennessee. what happened is the chimney fire, winds up to 50 or 70 miles per hour. the embers went down towards the gatlinburg area and a lot of leaf fallen. a ton of underbrush burned and took off. if you hear the reports from the residents in the shelter, got a knock on the door, didn't realize the fire was coming over the hill. they ran out, got in their cars, literally took themselves, maybe their pets and that was i have the. so many people, hundreds of homes lost. they have nothing. they literally just saved their own lives which obviously we're thankful for that but now waking up to the reality that they

. >> let's look at bill karins for our election day weather. what damage like out there today? >> it should be a high turnout. weather will be warm across the country. we would see a chance of thunderstorms and heavy rain along the gulf coast. i know new orleans is getting drenched early today, showers this afternoon through the ohio valley, texa seeing one of the worst forecasts as far as thundershowers should go. scattered showers and storms through the afternoon, right even through the evening hours. we won't see shower activity up in the ohio valley like michigan and down in the areas toward detroit. it's still very warm and mild across the country, including our friends there in michigan. that's a look at your election day, the big weather story of well, areas now on the gulf coast, we mentioned the rain is right there. look at the temperatures, they're mooilt mild just about everywhere. we will continue to watch temperatures fairly mild in new england after a cold, chilly morning this afternoon. should be pretty nice. now, this will go down as one of the warmest election
