with that, let's get a check of the weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. at's the forecast for the winds there? also, you've said there might be a place in the northeast that might have a white christmas. >> yeah, we're going to get to that. as far as the fire weather goes. the big storm that moved into the west has brought a little bit of rain and wet weather to the sierra in north california unfortunately, there's no rain heading to southern california. they're not going to get any help from that so all of the storm misses to the north. when the cold front itself, that's the blue line here, that's the leading edge of the cooler air, when that sweeps to the south the winds do pick up and the winds do change directions so fire fieshl offie worried about that. this is the leading storm leading into the holiday weekend. through today, difficult driving mostly mountain passes in montana and salt lake city as the storm system kicks on through. tomorrow, we move the storm to the midwest. there's not a lot of moisture available so we're not talking about a big sn

because of that wildfire as well. >> let's get the latest on the wildfires with nbc meteorologist bill karinsre looking specifically at the wind in that forecast? >> that's the whole key. that causes the fire to spread rapidly. here's the picture saturday. these are the smoke plumes blowing well out in the pacific. the thomas fire and the creek fire and the other one in southern california. as we zoom in closer to pinpoint some of the three fires here. the thomas fire is by far the biggest one. that's the one that did the 150 structures that caused 22,000 people to be evacuated near ventura county. and creek five, outside of l.a. and the forecast for today does have red flag warnings. we have critical fire weather in these areas. 50 to 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts possible at the higher elevations. lower elevations, even 25 to 35. this makes it very difficult for the firefighters out there. don't be surprised if you hear more stories unfortunately about structures burning and more evacuation. the cold air invading the country. it's december. well advertised. it's supposed to be here. it's not

and let's check back with bill karins to see what's in store, especially with these really critical fires. >> good morning again. i want to show you the maps. i want to explain why southern california is such a bad risk today. this goes back to march. this was after a very wet winter. look how green all the mountains were. so as we fast forward through this, and we go through the very dry summer, notice how brown all the map turns. that's all the vegetation drying up, some of it dying. and that has let to the extreme fire conditions. we have a lot of vegetation to burn. we have active fires and wind gusts today up to 60 to 70, maybe even 80-mile-per-hour winds. and that's why this has the potential to explode and burn so quickly. that's why the thomas fire is up to 90,000st two days. and unfortunately, there is no rain at all over the next seven days in this area. so the wet season has been the opposite study affecting millions of women control pills and its connection to cancer. that's next. weekend at kohl's. and take an extra 25% off! give joy with the pj masks headquarters a star wars

let's turn now to nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> i heard that friday is the busiest travel day of the season, especially friday afternoon, if you're hitting on the highways. so the storm system that is now in the rockies, will eventually be spreading across the country. let's look at the snowfall forecast through sunday. so this is mostly going to be over the next two days. notice the mountains of colorado getting heavy snow, montana and here near yellowstone. lighter snow amounts throughout the midwest. more nuisance types, 1 to 2 inches. nothing too significant. northern new england, though, you look like you're going to get a pretty good decent snow out of this as we go throughout friday night and into saturday. especially the northern half up in the mountains getting as much as 4 to 8 inches of snow. notice we really cut it off south of the mass pike. watch out for ice friday night into saturday. this is the ice forecast. near hartford, worcester, all the way back up into areas of new hampshire and maine. n risks his life and limb to defect to the south. we'll tell you more, w
