bill karins is tracking it. and, bill, what are we in for >> lester, good evening. the next 24 hours is the peak of this storm. today we saw the arctic surge all the way to south texas now the storm rushes to the east coast. we're going to see these storms combining and by tomorrow morning we'll have ourselves a bomb cyclone in southern portions of quebec. we'll also be watching the flash freeze coming towards the east coast early in the day, especially in the ohio valley. so what does this mean the winds will really pick up. 40 to 60-mile-per-hour winds through many areas tomorrow into areas of saturday morning. look at buffalo, could gust in western new york up to 72 mile per hour, almost hurricane strength and on top of that they are expecting two, three, maybe even four feet of snow and ice in isolated arareas. they're thinking in new york it would be the worst blizzard since 1985, lester >> bill karins, thank you. >>> breaking news in new york city tonight. an emergency situation on the staten island ferry. the fire department responding to a fire in the mechan

. >>> and with this big storm and frigid cold about to sweep across the country, let's bring in bill karins for the latest track and timing. bill, what are we looking at in the few days ahead? >> lester, this is going to be the worst pre-christmas storm we've seen in decades. we already have areas that are watches and warnings from the pacific northwest all the way to west virginia, everywhere in between. the timing of the worst weather. we start thursday morning with snow in areas of missouri and kansas city, heading towards the midwest. chicago snow breaks out during the day. by thursday evening st. louis, chicago into michigan, steady snow and the winds beginning to pick up. a the same time, heavy rain from washington, d.c. up to new york city will have its own delays. friday morning it becomes a bomb cyclone. this is when we'll have the strongest winds and power outages. it's not really about the snow. yes, we're going to get 6 to 12 inches in the great lakes. it's about the winds with this storm, and the winds will bring that cold air all the way down to the gulf coast. dallas negative

bill karins is tracking it. bill, how is this all going to play out? >> good evening, lester. we still have a blizzard to go, a severe weather outbreak and ending the week with a nor'easter. so let's get to the blizzard first. we're worried about portions of five states, especially travel on interstates 80, 90 and 25 through areas of wyoming. that's going to be really treacherous as we go through tomorrow and then right through the middle of the week. one to two feet of snow. winds could gust up to 65 miles per hour, which could cause snow drifts up to five feet throughout that region. and at the same time we're going to be dealing with a severe weather outbreak to the south. definitely going to have straight line winds. we also could have isolated strong tornadoes in areas of central louisiana. and then we end thursday, friday with a nor'easter. lester, it looks like rain right now for the big cities on the i-95 corridor but a heavy snow event inland. >> bill karins, thank you. >>> now to warning signs of a new migrant surge at the border. in el paso, texas the border patrol

. >>> joining me now bill karins., how bad is this storm system going to get and where is it going to hit the hardest? >> the central plains, alex. what we saw in california is going to be multiplied by two or three days in the plains and it's going to be blizzard conditions. almost impossible on the roads. we're worried about people getting stranded. they're going to tell people to stay home for two days in areas of western nebraska, especially. again, we want these storms in california. we need them to fill up these reservoirs. last winter, we had an active december too. tahoe, in the first 12 days of this month has had seven feet of snow. that's great for the skiers, but obviously it causes all the problems on the roads which you've seen. soda springs picked up 5 feet this weekend. right around tahoe, the donner pass area, 46 inches. some of -- they've had over 150 inches of snow already this ski season which is incredible. as far as what we have to deal with, 10 million people are under all sorts of warnings and a

let's head over to bill karins.can give us the details on how the storm is moving, wish it would move away. that doesn't look good. >> everybody wants to have it done with and move on with their lives. areas in new england are watching the front and the winds are not as strong in boston. look at maine coast. 52. everyone has been in the 30 to 40, at times 50 mile-an-hour range and we have so many people without power, from texas through the great lakes, and the buffalo area, the worse with the blizzard conditions, 64 mile per hour wind gusts, about two straight hours reporting zero visibility. i mean usually, it goes down to about a quarter, or an eighth of a mile, and then zero. and that's when you're in an extreme blizzard condition. you can see this band of bride white over the top of buffalo. that's what they're sitting in. we still have areas of snow, through syracuse, and new york state thruway by the way shut down from rochester to buffalo and down along the lakeshore for obvious reasons, because of the blizz

. >> nbc news meteorologist bill karins is tracking what's next for this system.begin in a snowy manchester, new hampshire, brian burnell from our nbc station in boston is there for us. >> brian, what are the conditions like? how are the roads? >> reporter: kate, especially when we talk about the streets, it is snowing right now. it's been snowing on and off all day. pretty steady for the last hour. it's a light snow, it's not a heavy snow. as for travel, the streets here in manchester wet, not so much white. you get onto the back streets, it's a little more slippery. as for the highways, 293, 93, headed this way into new hampshire, it depends on where you are. if you just go a few miles south of here, south of manchester, it's been all rain all day. you go north of here the farther north you go, the heavier the snow is. if you're south of here, the highway is fine. north of here you've got to be a little more careful. >> we know that some parts of new england are seeing wind speeds above 40 miles an hour. what's your understanding about the big concerns in that p

we have maggie vespa standing by for us, kathy park in tennessee, along with bill karins for us trackingall. bill, let me start with you on this one and give us an overview look after this. this weather system is pretty astounding. the headlines that are going to emerge from this thing, what can people expect? >> it's not often we get two events at the same time. we're getting this blizzard with the really high winds and then we're also getting the cold arctic blast behind it. it's like two pieces that are merged into one. it's already beginning. here's the storm. it's over wyoming right now. it is snowing in minneapolis at negative 5 degrees. talk about a light powdery snow. you can get your leaf blower out and blow it all over the place. right through the weekend, we're at negative 39 in wisconsin, negative 35 in rapid city. look at these windchill values in montana. we're close to negative 60 on the canadian border. this is the source of all the cold air that is heading into the central u.s. and all the way down to the gulf coast in the next few days. that's why we have windchill watc

i want to bring in meteorologist bill karins along with shaquille brewster on the road. bill, we've been paying close attention to your updates. you warmed of winds, storms, power outages, flood watches across the country. what's the latest right now? >> we're tracking the leading edge of this arctic outbreak. it's going through the dallas area and approaching chicago. we're going to track this all across the country. one of the maps that tells the story is our 24-hour temperature change. it's 58 degrees colder than at this exact time yesterday in denver. this helps us track where the cold air is. the leading edge of the cold air is moving in. here's the windchill values that are alive right now. it feels like negative 45 degrees in sioux city, iowa. notice chicago. not yet. you still feel like 29 degrees. that's a 75 degree difference between iowa and chicago. that's what they're going to expect in the chicago area. notice dallas, windchill is down to 4 as this cold air is about to surge all the way through central texas, even into south texas. and for that reason, that'

want to bring in who is standing by with us at o'hare's international airport, and meteorologist, bill karinsrlines are preparing ahead of the storm? >> reporter: yeah, basically they are reminding people of their options, long story short to delay their trip and rebook their flight around the storm's path. with severe weather in the past year we have had with the chaotic travel stories that have emerged over and over. in particular, this is a major, as you know, united hub, united airlines and others, they are sending out texts saying we already waived rebooking fees, and if you are coming through these airports you can rearrange your plans no charge. as you said, this storm, and you showed the futures map where it's making its way into the midwest and northeast by thursday and friday, and i know obviously bill can talk about that, but that's what everybody here is bracing for. chicago o'hare officials say they already have 500 staff members on standby to do things like clear runways of snow and ice and de-ice planes and things like that. they also have a massive inventory of cotts ready to

quad vega is in louisiana and bill karins is tracking it all. tornados are blamed for dozens of injuries and two fatalities so far in louisiana. what are you seeing this morning and what further threats remain? >> lindsey, we woke up with those images of the northwest part of louisiana, right. as you know in cado two people died. and we spoke to local authorities who said the destruction is about a mile long, 20 properties there significantly damaged, three completely destroyed. and west of there in union parish we know several people were left injured. that's what the storm can do. you look at the map and the area that could receive the severe weather extends from jackson, mississippi to louisiana, here in baton rouge, and as far east as tallahassee in florida. this is where people have to pay attention for the possibility of tornados, strong winds and hail, and then, of course, flash floods. one of the interesting things we've been told here that people have to keep in mind, is because of the large amount of rain expected, these tornados, the

and bill karins is tracking where all of this is heading. the story first is the tornadoes. three people have died in louisiana. what kind of damage are you seeing there and what's next? >> reporter: you can see the damage behind me from one of the tornadoes. we've been reporting on this since yesterday. the warnings kept popping up all day long. we've seen the difference of the devastation in louisiana, the state most affected. behind me, a lot of the homes a year ago, were dealing from the effects of a hurricane. and some of those homes were still being rebuilt. down the street here, you can see debris of what used to be homes. right over here, this driveway, that had an r.v. camper. that r.v. camper flew over in this direction. and that's what you're seeing here. it flipped over, most of it has been destroyed and it landed on an suv that was parked right where i'm standing. both of those were moved over and that is the kind of destruction we've seen with these tornadoes, as you mentioned. as of now, three people have died. one of those was in this neighborhood. we've been
