. >>> ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin has been watching the weather all day. so what can you tell us? >> the tsunami advisory i suspect won't be around much longer either. that's good news. but here is how it looks outside right now. we've been watching santa cruz harbor all day. the in and out surge. the tsunami impulses. this live picture showing the degree if you look down to the lower part of the screen. the pictures from today obviously across the pacific and to japan amazing. the pictures here, we've never really seen anything like this on live television where we had a tsunami move into the harbor like this. amazing day in santa cruz. lots of issues down with the boats. a tsunami warning is now a tsunami advisory. i suspect that will be dropped shortly adds well. when we come back we have weather to talk about as well. >>> the san mateo county is one of four counties on a state of emergency. the declaration makes state resources available now to those counties. >>> in just the last hour, the situation has changed in san francisco after a day on high ale

let's go to bill martin. >> and the waves are big today, by themselves, caused by weather. the waves you're seeing out there they are good sized waves. so don't be fooled with that. that really has nothing too with the tsunami. the tsunami surge that moved into monterey bay and the crescent city imnated by the quake happens once in 10 years. heading toward south america where those waves are now just arriving. for us the wave we got a little bit of an offshoot here and came over the pacific. an extraordinary day. let's show you some pictures from today. because in my time doing this on television and doing a part of newsrooms. i've never seen anything like this. it's a rare sight to see a tsunami caught on video tape. you don't see it that often, especially in santa cruz harbor. for a time today we were seeing storm surges or tsunami surging going up the harbor. it went on, it wasn't one wave it was numerous waves as we went through the afternoon hours. we even had claudine wong out in the golden gate bridge in san francisco. with the water tide going out you were watching

bill martin is tracking the storm and he has the latest from our weather center, bill. >> we have liver 2 showing rain. it's only been in the last hour that we get reports of rainfall. we're right on the latter part of the afternoon commute. but we're starting to see some heavier rainfall out of san francisco's beach. you see heavier showers as

over to bill martin for what we can expect tonight. bill. >> the latest radar showing rain in the north bay. there are showers everywhere else, but the real significant heavy rain north of the bay bridge right now. those showers should work their way south overnight or over in the next three hours. the heaviest rain has been up here towards albany and out toward richmond and san rafael. rain fall accumulations of up to an inch. with everybody else in the 10th of an inch rain. san jose, you are just getting ready to get rain down there. it's been dry most of the day. highs were in the mid 60s. most of it has been in north bay. the afternoon commute is getting a slow down because of the rain. the showers are going to last for the next couple hours easily and into the overnight hours. overnight lows are 40s and 50s. rain until the late 3:00, 4:00 in the morning and things should start to taper off. morning commute, the roads will be wet. i imagine most of the dry, most of the sky will be dry. i don't think we'll see a lot of rain coming do

. >>> chief meteorologist bill martin, sounds like a wet week? >> wet weather headed our way. the models are calling for wet weather into the weekend. a lot of it looks like showers. although we did get a quarter inch in some areas. showers right now, showing up in the san jose area, you see towards mountain view, really light stuff. you have been out in it. windshield wipers on low at best. this system very, very weak as compared to tomorrow, mid- morning, which has more of an ump. tomorrow is a wet afternoon commute. the heart is around 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. so it's wet. you know, we are still in the winter months. clouds tomorrow. morning commute will be wet but not pouring. the heart of the rain is between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. i will show you the model and we will see where you lie. the forecast then as we move through tomorrow. wet again, wednesday, stays showery. friday, colder, different kind of storm gets here. right now snow levels are high. this is a warm system. highs in the 60s. friday more cold air. as you can see, a weak and into the weekend unsettled water

if we can bring bill martin into this. when you talk about being in the water up in this area near the clamouth river and a water rescue this is not an easy situation. >> no. as soon as you said that, i know the river well. this time of year a ton of snow, a ton of run off. now picture folks down there close right into the ocean, picture the tsunami going up stream, the bulge of water moving upstream and i tell you when you are standing there it seems harmless. would you look at the water coming up, not much different than what claudine did showing us the water coming in underneat that underneath that thing now imagine all that water races out and that is where the damage is done. there is heavy flow there. it is probably at its high mark and then you add a tsunami surge of perhaps eight feet. i don't know what it was at the river mouth but perhaps eight feet. then anywhere you are standing it is going to accelerate and flood its banks. again we are looking at live pictures of santa cruz harbor. right? i can't tell you how

it's here, let's check in now with our chief meteorologist bill martin in the weather system. >> next couple of days it's going to be wet out there. your commutes are going to be impacted tomorrow morning and thursday morning. the rain moving offshore now. this rainfall is moving in right now. not impacting your commute. well some people it might be. most of the commuters have gone about their business. hopefully you won't have any problems moving through. as we head into the overnight hours we're going to see more rain into wednesday morning. that's why the national weather service has issued a flood flash watch for basically everybody. what they are saying is the ground is saturated. if we get an inch of rain, you're going to have standing water on roadways for your wednesday morning commute. the headline here is commute. wednesday morning and then again thursday morning. wednesday morning is right in the heart of this thing. so is thursday morning in the heart of the next one that moves in. so the forecast then as we go into wednesday and thursday. rain, showers, even thundershower

our chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking all of it in the ktvu weather center and he's here now with live radar images, bill. >> live storm tracker two is lit up right now especially in the avenues of san francisco. let's go out there right now as we get a little bit closer, you can see out toward the avenues we are seeing heavy rain out near daily city as well. these are significant rainfall. green you're representing yellow and red. we can track this to the santa clara, but in saratoga, it's going to start raining hard. cuper to the best ertino about 16. we have wind advisories in the area right now. the morning commute is going to certainly be impacted by this. when we come back, i'm going to look at the computer model. >>> california department of water resources measured the sierra snow pack. the northern sierra is at 15 of normal. the central sierra is at 130%. and the southern sierra was at 139%. >>> in el dorado county where a ktvu camera man strapped on snow shoes to shoot this video the snow is 8 feet deep. for the three sierra districts, the snow pack is 123% of norma

over to bill martin. what are we looking at this evening, bill?> we will, we got a few clouds out there. there was a little bit of drizzle in the north bay. cloudy and mild tonight. tomorrow looks like a nice day. we go outside. i want to show you where the sprinkles would come from. live stormtracker2, you can see the clouds up here, this whole area driving to the north. this is good rain up here. but that's into oregon. so this area down here, as it moves in will trigger few overnight sprinkles. not a big deal, shouldn't be enough to mess with your morning commute. as we go into the next few day, high pressure takes charge, especially on wednesday, when we see temperatures going into the 70s, upper 60s and low 70s. sanjose tomorrow, partly cloudy, i think the sprinkles will be north of san jose if they occur. daytime high in downtown san jose, 64 degrees. so a nice day. tomorrow is kind of a transition day into a really nice day on wednesday. but the current satellite image shows everything, the mown men -- the momentum, everything going through

let's get right to our chief meteorologist, bill martin. >>> let's go to tiburon. i want to point out saturday night's winds coming from the direction out of the south and southeast so you get this. what you could get on the back of angel island is turbulence inside there where the boats are moored and that would actually give you -- give you an increased wind speed. let's back out a little bit. we'll look now at the current rainfall. we do have activity around morgan hill and gilroy. live stormtracker2 picking up light showers. earlier i did have thundershowers out there in gilroy and morgan hill with slight hail. things are mellowing out. but i as -- as i mentioned, there's some weather, big weather, especially the thursday deal. it looks like a 9 out of a 10 kind of thing. there's another one coming in tuesday night, wednesday. we'll look at all of it. it will be a wet week. you will need the umbrella. i will be back with more details. >> thank you, bill. >>> the snowfall is not over in the sierra. it's causing big problems for drivers. the storm brought more pr

our chief meteorologist bill martin is here right now, what are we looking at? >> yesterday's storm was huge. there's storms out there right now on storm tracker two. the break, even though it's sprinkling is helping out quite a bit. because rivers and creeks are having an opportunity to go down over the next system. the richmond san rafael bridge we have showers near grizzly peak. scattered showers, you may have gotten over one of these cells today. the rain coming down heavy at times in the dun barton bridge as well. over milpedas. we have heavy rain up in the hills perhaps an inch of rain up in the santa cruz mountains maybe an inch and a half. now the soils are saturated and we're starting to see slippage. to another half an inch, we're going to see more slopping of the hillsides. that's a big concern. so another weather system coming in here tonight and tomorrow morning. we'll have all the details on that. we'll look at the latest computer models in just a minute. >>> all that rain headed o our way could make a bad situation worse. what started as just a cr

. >>> over now to our chief meteorologist bill martin, whatever we looking at bill? >> we have rain back in the forecast. there will be some wind as well, some wind advisory will be in the hills around the bay area. gusts could easily go up to 40 miles per hour. we're going to get wet, it'll be wet overnight into the morning commute. we go outside and you can clearly see that weather system sitting offshore, this one is different than the last one. the last one literally came from up north. right, so it was cold, it was arctic. this one is coming from more of a mid-latitude, not quite as as far north so there's a lot of moisture entrained in here. so we're going to get an inch, inch and a half of rain and that's a significant amount of rainfall in a winter storm. that's a good one. and it'll be overnight into the morning commute. the heaviest rain is tonight after midnight. the showers go on all night, your morning commute should be wet. the wipers shouldn't be on full in your 8:00, 9:00 hour. but there'll be a little bit of rain coming out. the roads will be very we

we go over to mark tamayo in for bill martin. >> on the satellite i can show you this with the batch of cloud cover. not over the bay area but over a good portion of the state. we'll take a look at the current numbers. right now we're up to the upper 50s and 60s. here is the the forecast in the short term. at 6:00 we will still call it mild. temperatures in the low to mid- 50s. 50 to 55. by 8:00, 50 to 60 still scattered high clouds out there. by 10:00 partly cloudy skies will continue to cool off. nothing too extreme by 10:00 back down to the mid-40s. you can see most of the region in the 40s. coolest locations in the upper 40s for santa rosa and napa, livermore at 40 degrees and you can count on the clouds with at least partly cloudy skies if not to mostly cloudy observations as we head into the saturday. you can see what's happening over the past 12 hours this cold front mainly approaching the north western tips of the state. not a lot to show you right now but the clouds already approaching the bay area as it heads to the south. we will continue to track rain chances especially p
