in the weather center. >> maureen, bill martin has a question for you.want to update viewers if they're just joining us. this fire just broke out in east san jose not far from east ridge mall. in east san jose, it started out as a brush fire. we checked with our meteorologist bill martin who says the winds in the area are relatively calm. about 88 degrees, 14 miles per hour. here is bill martin with the conditions there. >> we had the high fire danger. the heat advisory yesterday. things are dried up. in this fire zone area we're looking at live pictures. i can tell you the temperatures in this area about 87 degrees right now. the relative humidity is running any where from 13 to 15%. now that's pretty low. now maureen mentioned the winds and the smoke. there is some breeze out there. this fire is creating a lot of its own wind. the winds near the fire are any where from 15 to 16-miles-an- hour and they're coming from the west northwest. that's the hire humidity direction. that's a cooler direction. that makes sense because when you look at the smoke plu

our chief meteorologist bill martin told us weather is a factor but terrain is a big deal. >> humidity winds gusting 30 miles per hour. there is a wind advisory in place. this area usually have humidities in the single and teens. you can see the smoke plume here. we got reports of gusts of 30. in this area, highway 5, ve driven to southern california, you know what it looks like. super vertical. so as you look at the hillsides you can see. not a lot of houses. not remote but rugged, san bernardino mountains kind of stuff. stuff burns up hill. if you look, fire wants to move up hill. it reaches up the hill. what we are seeing is firefighters -- fire sparked right there. they climb up the hill. firefighters are attacking it this way. breezy out there. we have seen way worse fire conditions. we will keep you posted on this situation as it is always kind of dangerous this time of year. we have a red flag warning thal will go -- that will go into effect into your area friday. i wouldn't be surprised to see it extended. temperatures increased. came up 5, 8 degrees over yesterday. temperature

chief meteorologist, bill martin is going to tell us about record heat on the way. we begin with ktvu's ken wayne, and the fire fighting effort underway in napa right now. >> reporter: the winds have been picking up on and off as it's been getting darker tonight. if you look over the walls of this old historic resort. a few hundred yards out there in the darkness, you might make out the helmet flash flights of the firefighters. it's been a very long day for firefighters across northern california. in fact, the entire state. and it's going to be a very long night. the call cam in at 6:38 this evening. a fire burning in the hills northeast of napa on sodiuma canyon road. within minutes, cal fire launched two helicopters as about 60 firefighters, including department of corrections work crews hit the fire lines on the ground. >> looks like there's power lines down. we've got investigators looking into it. >> the fire is burning at the ruins of the napa silver springs resort. built in the 1950s. the fire burns tonight to a stand of eucalyptus trees, notorious for thst b

i just spoke with our chief meteorologist bill martin, he says wind right now 35 miles per hour.ures in the 70s. and humidity is in the single digits all of that is not what firefighters need to bring this fire under control. roads are closed in the area. also we have just learned that the sheriff down there says they are evacuating at least 200 people near the pacific coast highway. we also heard that they have already evacuated hundreds of others as a result of this fire. again, live pictures here of a raging fire out of control in ventura county. >>> more developing news in oakland firefighters are on the scene right now of a one alarm fire. it broke out around 10:00 on the block of 65th avenue in east oakland. it was confined to the back of the house. the owners were at home at the time and are being interviewed by investigators about the cause. one owner suffered a burn to the house while trying to keep the fire from burning his own house. >> reporter: officials said they found toxic items in 10 brands of popular lipsticks. researchers say there still could be a long term he

. >>> now to bill martin. bill, are the conditions getting any better? >> getting better. the winds last night got howling through those areas that have the fires. wind gusts are up around 40 miles per hour. here's where alex was in this area. these are automated weather stations. they give us up to the moment temperatures and humidity. it's 84 degrees and 9% humidity at this station. 8% humidity at this one. humidities are low. temperatures are high. check out the winds. calm at this station. northeast at 6. so the winds have really backed off. the firefighters will tell you, winds are your biggest enemy in a fire fight like this in these zones. red flag warning is going away at 6:00. that doesn't mean we don't have some fire danger. check out the winds right now. notice the direction of these winds. that's a northerly wind. that's a dangerous direction. it's a dry direction. kind of strong in fairfield. fire danger will continue. one bit of hope in relief is the west winds showing up at sfo. that's a sea breeze. it's very limited. only making it about this far inland. we
