bill martin tells us how a pacifica woman has helped clean up local beaches. >> gonna try to look for anything that was made by man. >> reporter: lin adams says she always noticed the litter on pacifica mar beach. litter she learned was being blown by a picnic area. with friends, she said monthly cleanups here became a labor of love. that led her to be an early member of the pacific beach coalition. >> i became obsessed to give other people an opportunity to try to learn from the cleanup. >> reporter: before you knew it, groups of people joined in her passion. they have 8500 volunteers. berkeley's st. john's presbyterian church led a hand. >> they are cleaning up something, that's benefiting everyone. >> it's better than it was. we've been here for six years and the beach is sure. first time we did it, we came in with big, giant plastic -- plastic bags filled with trash. >> reporter: as the movement continues to glow, the message trickles down through generations. >> my hope is that these kids find a voice that they learn something today that they can talk to others and teach others.

today, chief meteorologist bill martin has the story of a man who helped champion the bay area ridge il for over 20 years. >> reporter: bill long, a modern day trail blazer, joined the bay area ridge trail council over 20 years. the trail ran 160 miles. since bill became chairman, the council has added almost 200 miles and plans 200 more. >> i wouldn't say any of it was easy. some of it happened fairly quickly within two, three hours of approaching a landowner or an agency. some pieces took over 20 years. >> reporter: trails provide comrs and outdoor -- exercise and outdoor enjoyment. >> great views at the top. >> a couple of times i'm up here. it's a great trail. >> reporter: the trail connects many open spaces from gillry to calistoga. in return, the trail depends on adjoining open space agencies to open and expand expansions. including a new napa extension. >> the bay itself should be visible from wherever we route the ridge trail. that's not true everywhere but we're pretty close to the goal. >> the view from this trail is absolutely gorgeous. the panoramic view, you can look at t

let's check in with our meteorologist bill martin and bill i know it's not on the radar today but boyomething else. >> it really was. frank and i were talking over the break. every five years we've had frequency. every five years you get an event like this and last night was a stunner within those lightning strikes. 94 in antioch, 92 in livermore. temperatures cooled in the inland bay valleys. that's what they're going to do over the next few days. here's what we're tracking. the storms are erupting here. the flows are doing something like this. last night got kicked back over the bay area. right now that same pattern isn't really developing as aggressively so not anticipating any thunderstorms tonight. as we get into tomorrow night there's no chance we could see it. that's why the red flag warning stays in effect. look up here in the hills. it's going off out there. giving calfire lots of concerns in the west part of the valley. that's why the red flag warning sitting up there and will stay up there until wednesday afternoon. an unusual pattern and one that bears watching as we found

. >>> our chief meteorologist, bill martin, in the weather center now. bill, you've been tracking the conditions impacting the firefight today. >> definitely. we showed you the chopper shots earlier. the terrain in the area, it's really vertical. there's a lot of terrain. look at this map kind of depicting the fire zone. this area, fairly remote and fairly -- just wooded and hard to get to. 89 degrees in the area north of the fire. humidity is about 20%. this is not unusually hot but it certainly -- they certainly are fire conditions for this time of year. the big concern, of course, are the lightning strikes that continue in this area. and along the west slope, all the way up to mount shasta. there's that red flag warning that is in effect for northern california. and it will stay in effect for the next few hours. coming up in just 15 minutes, i'm going to talk about the fog that's going to be moving back into your neighborhood tonight big-time. we'll talk about the hot spots and the five-day forecast, with your weekend in view, back here in 15 minutes.

chief meteorologist bill martin has been tracking the weather conditions.wayne, who is live on the fire lines with how that fire got very close to the command post today. ken? >> reporter: we have some new information for you. we've learned that within the last 90 minutes, the sheriff's deputies have been going door to door in the pine mountain lake area to tell residents that they should evacuate. this is a large resort community. about 2500 people live there. some permanent residents and a lot of vacation homes there. people are being told they should evacuate. it's because of the erratic nature of this fire. you can see smoke hanging over the edges of this facility. this is where the firefight is being coordinated from. we did not have to go find the fire today. here at the command center, the fire came to us. there were tense moments this afternoon as flames bore down on the fire command center. trees lit up just a few yards from dozens of supply vehicles. personnel grabbed protective gear, bracing for the worst. >> we're just trying to put the best pla

. >> and chief meteorologist, bill martin, he has been tracking the conditions near the fire. he joins us now with the latest. bill? >> and it's typical august conditions up in the fire area. here's a map of where the fire is, near sonora. we come in close. first thing i want to point out is the topography. look how vertical these cliffs are. a lot of terrain that firefighters are dealing with. not only that, but you've got winds blowing about 13 miles an hour, 4 miles an hour, kind of ranging in there, out of the southwest, west-southwest. temperatures in the upper 80's and even low 90's. nasty fire conditions. and thunderstorms. current conditions, the red flag warning for northern california persists and in this fire area as well, lightning strikes. when i come back, we're gonna talk a little bit more about the fog that's going to move into the bay area. we'll look at the five-day forecast as well. >>> there is now just one week to go before the bay bridge is closed for several days. a live look now at the bay bridge, where you can see -- actually, you can't really see the t

let's go to our chief meteorologist bill martin. finally got that summer weather we have been waiting for. >> reporter: yeah. it's cool along the coast. clearing out at the beach little bit of clearing out by the cliff house. fog working its way back in. this is the time of year, the weekend when the temperatures dropped a bit, feels a little bit like fall. we will see. right now we're still in a summer pattern. that puts your fog in daily city. fog down by pacifica, obviously. out in the sunset district. they have fog. as we go into the inner regions we find temperatures still in the upper 80s. fairfield 87. santa rosa 85. it is kind of windy out there, too. winds in fairfield, we were watching that fire for you. sustained wind at fairfield near the fire, 22 miles an hour. sustained at 22. that will get you gust to 25, of miles an hour. we have some significant winds blowing. temperatures tomorrow like today. slightly cooler. just a nice strong push of wind. the winds blow northwest and pushes the fog offshore. you get a little bit

if you have outdoor plans, our chief meteorologist bill martin has help in planning when you want tobe inside and maybe stay outside. >> reporter: the weekend is looking good for lots of outside actually. the fog at the coast that's the constant player. there it is behind me. it's about where it was last night. the marine lands a little thicker in some places, not much. temperatures today exactly like they were yesterday. you saw the fog right along the coast there. we come in close. you can see the current numbers. it's 90 degrees right now as you look in the liver more valley. that's pretty warm. if you look outside towards napa, 83. santa rosa 89 degrees. highs tomorrow a little cooler. these are subtle changes. we're talking about like cooler, warmer, but not the classic big warmup or big cool down. just subtle changes. a few degrees here or there, especially inland. tomorrow a lot like today. sunday it will warm up four or five days. sunday ends up being the warmest date on the bay area weekend. the forecast tomorrow morning, in the bay, in the livermore valley. slightly cooler

martin case that nobody wants to talk about that. they just want to talk about black-on-black crime. >> bill: i think everybody talked about the trayvon martin case until we were going to faint. there is a context to it and the context arose when the verdict came in and then certain people in the grievance industry primarily but other sincere people as well, i'm not going to discount that were disappointed in the verdict, all right. and then they started to level charges that america is a racist country. you have heard them. we have used them here that we are a bad society, that we're trying to hurt, hunt down -- white men are trying to hunt down black people. and that's where it arose, that the problem in the violence in this country isn't generated by whites. it's generated primarily by blacks. so it's in context. surely you know that. >> well, the majority of people are actually killed by someone of their own race. i'm sure that you know that. so, you have the majority of white people being killed by white people, 83%. and it's slightly higher among blacks. the key stat and, again, so everybody know what is kirsten and i are are ta
