chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the conditions in the midwest. >> he's in our weather center now with the details, bill. >> reporter: it's that time of year. they're getting hit hard and they're going to get hit hard again tomorrow. we'll talk about that. but let's reconstruct what happened here. look at the size of this storm. from north eastern texas to the west. by far the most serious weather was in this area. just northern illinois where we saw a series of tornadoes touchdown. but one in particular, the one that heather just showed you. that one looks as though it may have run a path up to 50 miles. each one of these storms reports here is representing a spotter on the ground. so here at 6:43, they recognize this tor tornado on the ground. they don't know how big it is, they just know it's big. you move toward rockford and it's on the ground at -- that's a bad -- 7:34 you get the picture though. this tornado. this one tornado covered the lenght of 50 miles. the system now is moving off to the east. as it does we're going to see tornado watches and warnings go up tomorrow

for that, let's bring in our meteorologist for our chief, bill martin. what are we expecting? >> gasia, the first system won't be a strong one, but enough to remind us what rain looks like. maybe a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch across the region. clear skies over san francisco bay, but by tomorrow afternoon, that will be changing. you can see a few high clouds dropping into the northern parts of the state. but fairly quiet right now, but look at all this cold air developing up into the pacific here, up to the north and west. this will be approaching the bay area. so beginning tomorrow, a drop off in temperatures. big drop off in the readings as we head into the weekend. especially for the morning hour and a stronger storm that will pass through and some heavy rains and gusty winds and possibly a winter storm watch in the sierra. that will be on tuesday, so that will be the headliner storm over the next few days. here's our forecast model for your saturday. partly cloudy skies. in fact, we'll thicken up the clouds throughout the day on saturday. look what happens. fi

earlier we heard from bill richard, the father of martin richard, the 8-year-old boy killed in the attackat he wrote. "we know the government has its reasons for seeking the death penalty, but the continued pursuit of that punishment could bring years of appeals and prolong reliving the most painful day of our lives." bill richard goes on to ask for a life sentence for tsarnaev with no possibility of release and no chance of appeal. the victims of those attacks have different feelings on this. a lot of people will be closely following the next phase of that trial when it resumes after the marathon. >> there are some restrictions for the jurors as it pertains to that race. what are they? >> after the verdict, after dzhokhar tsarnaev was found guilty on all 30 counts the judge asked the jurors to come in on an off day. he talked about the events surrounding the anniversary, which was april 15th and the marathon patriots day tomorrow. he told them they are not allowed to participate in any events related to the marathon or anniversary. they can't watch it. this is a big day for the city. it
