let's back now with chief meteorologist bill martin. a chilly night and an early morning to kick off this new week. >> yeah, definitely. a frost advisory tomorrow. second morning in a row. and then we've got a dry pattern that's going to stick with us really into the end of the month. right. and so this is the long range model. we'll take a look at it. because a lot of the problems that los angeles is having southern california ventura county, they haven't had rain right. we've had a lot of rain compared to them. they're like 2% 5% of rainfall average. we're 100% of rainfall average. so when you don't get rain, you get fires, especially especially in the southland. and so here's the model. and it's not picking up rain, not even for us as we go all the way through next week or into early next week into sunday and monday. you can see we've got a essentially everything staying to the north of us. so the wind for tonight in la county is going to pick up overnight tonight. it's going to peak tomorrow morning about 11 a.m. so look at the cont

. >> let's bring in ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin. ll, how are the winds in the area, and do you think that's going to affect the air quality? >> yeah, definitely. right now the winds christina are and mike are light and variable 3 to 4 miles an hour. they're blowing out into the bay. so it's not a huge wind. but i'll go back to what's burning. you know, whatever's burning is toxic. wood burning is toxic as you look at this plume. so the evacuations, the sheltering in place. i think that's wise. it is known to be a large battery. as mike said, a large battery inventory storage facility. so the chances are perhaps that that that is what's burning. and that would be toxic. lithium polymer batteries are not good to breathe, as you know, and i suspect that's they've moved people around. so right now the winds are going to move out towards, depending on how long this burns, the winds tomorrow are going to shift a little more southwest. so that would push it back kind of onshore and up towards the central part of the bay. so we'll keep an ey

for more on our conditions, we're joined by ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin. hi, bill. >> yeah, hi. we've definitely got a situation around here where the weather was warmer today. southern california having issues, for sure with the red flag warnings, but it's not as long a duration. a red flag warning is what we saw a few weeks ago. so it's not day after day after day. it's going to be a day and a half of some pretty strong winds, which still very dangerous. overall, these are the highs from today. noticeably warmer than yesterday by a solid 10 or 15 degrees in some places. the wind advisory you can see it here. they've actually dropped it for the east bay hills. but the wind advisory will be in effect for these areas in the north bay. so our windy. we had some good winds this morning, but the winds are not as robust as they were last night. the frost advisory there it is again tonight. second night in a row. and then tomorrow will be a day very similar to today. not quite as warm. we hit 68 degrees in santa rosa today. now tomorrow. santa rosa in the mid 60s

. >> and we begin our coverage tonight with chief meteorologist bill martin. d, bill, another night of strong, dangerous winds in the forecast. certainly not a lot of people sleeping tonight worried? >> yeah, especially in that that fire zone. this is the second night in a row. last night was windy. tomorrow night or tonight into tomorrow morning is going to be windier. there is a rare warning for the southland. it's called a pds. and the pds is particularly dangerous situation. this essentially is a level up. this is the area in purple. this is a level up from a red flag warning. so it's like taking your taking it all the way up and beyond. so we saw one of these yesterday as well. we haven't really had one of these in northern california yet. but when you see pds you know you've got some serious business going on up there. the winds right now are not that out of control. 15 to 20 miles an hour in the hills. i did pick up some winds out of oxnard at about 40 miles an hour. out by just north of malibu. those winds will pick up later on tonight into tomorrow mor

chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now with that part of our coverage bill. >> yeah for sure. storm for a firestorm in terms of dry la, 1% of rainfall average at lax. to put that in perspective, we're over 100 and 110, 120% in northern california of rainfall average today. so they're super dry. then they get the record winds or the really strong winds. and it's you get what you got and it's going to continue. the winds shouldn't be as strong, but the red flag warning will continue through wednesday. the embers, the fires that have been put out will continue to be a problem as they can easily, as you know, can easily restart. and that's how the oakland hills fire got started was after a fire. we thought it was out and then the winds got ahold of it. so this is the smoke plume. and what i want you to see on the smoke plume is basically the wind direction. so here you see the smoke going offshore. this is tonight. and then you see the offshore wind. now watch what happens as we go into overnight. see this right here. that that's the wind picking up again tomorrow afternoon and re

with that, we turn to our chief meteorologist, bill martin.g is the big surf sticking around here? >> you know it's not giant mike. it's more. it's a surf. it's not a high surf advisory. it's a beach, a beach. excuse me? it's a beach warning statement. so there is some good sized swell. so it is dangerous. it's just not 15, 20 foot. it's more like 6 to 8, eight, 8 to 10 foot. it's still big and it's going to stay big on and off for the next couple of days. we got a frost advisory, we got a wind advisory. and then you've got this. the big story of the week is going to be weather story is going to be this cold arctic air coming all the way down. i mean these are the forecast highs for tomorrow atlanta 27 degrees. that's the daytime high ten degrees in chicago washington the daytime high is 19 degrees. so just a really cold air mass. and of course it puts a lot of people, millions of people under that, you know, cold blanket if you will. and that's when you get a lot of problems. you got a lot of people impacted, you got roadways impacted, you go

this event is free and open to the public, so let's bring in our ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin tracking the weather conditions that people will be facing. hi, bill. yeah. >> hi, christina. yeah, it's definitely going to be a cool one tonight as you're out watching fireworks and the polar plunge types in the morning. it's going to be chilly. a frost advisory in effect for parts of the bay area for the third morning in a row. temperatures during the day tomorrow will make it back into the upper 50s low 60s, but a very kind of cool start to the day. it's a cool out there right now. the weather is pretty nice though for the festivities that are going on, so just be safe as you travel around the bay area highways. there's no fog really, just that frost in the morning. but hopefully you get to bed before morning. temperatures today were in the 50s, low 60s. like i said, that's where they go again tomorrow. here's the frost advisory. there were freeze warnings last night. those freeze warnings have been dropped. not going to be as cold tonight, but still going to be frosty in those in

more snow is on the way, so we'll bring in chief meteorologist bill martin, now, who is tracking snow showers expected later this week and our bay area forecast. hi, bill. >> yeah. hi, christina. happy new year to everyone. we have snow and rain back in the forecast, but not for tomorrow. tomorrow's temperatures are going to be nice. they're going to be in the 60s. it's going to be pretty nice. mostly sunny, a cool morning, but no frost advisories. the next system gets in here on friday. and that's what christina is alluding to, is this thing is going to drop some snow in the mountains, is going to drop a little bit of rain here. but i think in terms of productive productivity, in terms of rainfall, snowfall, it'll be the mountains. the mountains are going to get hit pretty significantly with a foot over a foot of snow most likely, and probably see some kind of a winter weather advisory, which would have people traveling around. this is a holiday weekend still, and so folks might be driving around friday, and friday is going to be a tough one to get to the mountains. this is the live

bill martin is looking at the conditions firefighters are facing. but first let's go to ktvu. tom vacar live in our newsroom with where the firefight stands now. and, tom, the long term fire outlook. >> well, these fires will completely redefine preparation and literally firefighting itself in less than 24 hours, the hughes fire consumed over 10,000 acres. though this fire is getting the headlines, the palisades and eaton fires are still burning and dangerous. >> from the palisades to our multiple wildland fires that have occurred in the city and around the city within our region. it's been extremely challenging. >> consider this even a week before the month is over, california has already racked up more than 51,000 acres burned, compared to just four acres by this time last year, and just 457 acres over the five year average. rains expected in la this weekend raised concerns about mudflows, but the national weather service says the rains will not be significant to create dramatic flows or extinguish the fires and terrain. drying santa winds will not abate until at least the e

chief meteorologist bill martin with us now. let's talk current conditions down there for those firefighters. >> yeah, much better than it was earlier today. gusts earlier today, up to 40 miles an hour. i saw some 50 mile an hour gusts on the ridges. the winds down about 15 miles an hour now gusting back to 30. this smoke plume from earlier today. and look how it lays down. that's when the winds are at their strongest. it is now 10,176 acres on the fire, 1,414% contained. and the thing i wanted to point out here is they got firefighters and we all got a great break here. and that castaic lake is right here. the fire is moving this way down the ramp and it was a natural fire break. so a good portion of this fire got trimmed off and couldn't jump the lake, even though the winds were strong earlier. and they thought it could, it might, but it didn't. and then the fire kind of wrapped its way. this is where they're actively fighting the fire now, right along the east shore, kind of the southeast shore of lake castaic, up in the recr

and we will bring in ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin for a look at our weather conditions. clear night. bill looks like it's going to be pretty good to kick in the 2025 new year. >> a pretty nice night. you bet it could be raining right. here we are into into coming into january. it's typically a wet time of year but it's not tonight so it's working out for us. we could use more rain and we'll see more rain on friday. here's the highs from today. these are the highs from today and they'll be about the same tomorrow. not many big changes except that frost advisory will be in effect tomorrow morning for some of the inland bay valleys. these spots. but the freeze warning has been dropped. so all kind of low grade stuff really. our next chance for real weather in terms of rain. it comes on friday and this is the long range model. and you'll see it. there's friday right there. and then it ridges up again. see the big ridge of high pressure. and so we're going into an extended dry period potentially again long range models. it doesn't mean it's going to nail it. but it looks like

chief meteorologist bill martin with us again. no rain here. no rain there. yeah, exactly. california. a little bit of a dry spell. >> yeah, we were just talking about the break. yeah. la if they don't get rain, this fire thing is going to go on right into the spring and potentially into the summer. right. so and there's nothing showing right now. the models are like light on rain. yeah. they're not showing anything really until maybe for us on friday night into saturday. but even then it's just minor stuff. and la zero maybe a few sprinkles at some point. but anyway, what i'm getting at here is we need rain right now. the long range models are not indicating anything significant, which is would be helpful in the case of southern california. instead, we've got temperatures like these. these are the highs from today well above the average, well above yesterday's numbers. yesterday's numbers were in napa was like 52 degrees yesterday. it's like an overnight low. but they ended up at 66 degrees today. so 1415 degrees above where we were yesterday in many places 68 in san jose.

with that, we want to turn now to our chief meteorologist, bill martin. bill, how does it look down there? >> it's better than it has been, christina. there are still red flag warnings, but they're going to get dropped here in the next 45 minutes or so. around 6:00. we are looking at lack of rain. that's the big story down there. that's kind of the story up here too. hasn't rained since january 3rd. that's 12 days and we're not expecting any rain until the next model opportunity is around 26 or 27. even that looks pretty light. the pds, the particularly dangerous situation, looks like it will get dropped down here until at 6:00, and then the red flag warning will stay in effect for the hills until thursday afternoon. on the hills of the southern california area. so we'll keep an eye on that. but not it's still very dangerous. obviously the red flag warning, but it's just not quite as severe. the winds today were strong, but not as strong as as they could have been. not in the 70 or 80 miles an hour like right now. the winds are two miles an hour southwest

ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin here with a look at the forecast. bill looks cold there.ittle cold here. >> yeah, definitely the case. and they did get the rain, greg. and it was beneficial. rain, quite frankly. so there were concerns that there would be could be some real issues. as always, the case with rain in l.a, they don't drain well. but with the fires they were concerned. but the rain, i think, really was just right, right at the right amount that it really did wonders for containment on all fires. and i think they got away with it and there's more rain to come. they're going to be much better off in terms of the red, the code red situation with the low fuel moistures. right. because everything's come up, the moisture and the fuels have come up. so it's harder to catch a fire. and hopefully in the next week they'll see some rain further south as well again. so that would maybe take us out of this feedback loop or this cycle that we experienced over that, you know, during those fire periods. so this is a long range model. you can see the low down around la, i think

we're turning to chief meteorologist bill martin with a look at what's ahead. hi, bill. >> yeah, i'm an expert on sunsets, for sure. here it is, 2025. got another angle on this evening. sunset. if you're not looking at your tv, go look at it and you'll see some beautiful colors. days are getting longer. that's kind of cool. hope you had a nice day. we got rain in the forecast. we actually had a few sprinkles out there today. just a few light sprinkles. no windshield wiper stuff. just a few drips and drops here and there. friday though, we get back into some rain. it looks like it's going to rain most of the day on friday or in the morning a little bit in the afternoon. not a ton of water from the sky. it's a colder system, but it will produce in the mountains. so right now you got tomorrow, right? you got thursday, and then friday is your wet day. and then saturday. sunday looks pretty good. we'll get more specific as we move on. overnight lows tonight are going to be a little warmer because of the clouds. there's some of that rain out there now. these systems c

and you can see them blowing in the smoke in this area, let's bring in chief meteorologist bill martin for what we can expect over these next 24 hours. bill. >> yeah, well, the wind advisory is the red flag warnings. but again, these are two very different than the palisades fire, certainly because you're dealing in more of a rural area. there's not a lot of high trees. there's not the vegetation is oak and scrub. so you're not going to see those big fire embers going a mile, two miles out ahead, because they're blowing off the tops of these large trees, 100 foot trees. this area is basically classic california. you can kind of see this map here. it's you don't even really see trees. so it's a fast moving. it's not burning that hot. this fire is hot, obviously, but it's not like the palisades. palisades was buildings and cars. this has the potential to do that. but you're seeing more of a wildland fire here and they're fighting it accordingly, which it's easier to, i think, much easier to fight this fire than it would be to fight the palisades fire. so with that said, though, the winds

with that, we bring in our chief meteorologist, bill martin. red flag warning in effect now. but the extreme fire danger bill that's coming up. what? early tomorrow morning. >> yeah. the next couple of days. mike, that red flag warning stays in effect through wednesday. and again, we have record dry in southern california. we've got we had a week from a week ago. we had record winds. now the winds aren't going to be at that same level but the dry will be. so it's going to be breezy, windy not as but as dry. and those conditions of course, are ripe for any kind of fire. start also on these fires the containment values are low, meaning that the perimeters of these fires are not completely squashed out of warmth, flame, potential fire starts. and that's the big concern, because if you remember, the oakland hills fire started after an evening burn, no firestorm. at that point. they put the fire out. the winds came up overnight in the oakland hills, up around near berkeley, and it just reignited. and that's imagine this. now that was a small house kind of a fire. this is huge acrea

chief meteorologist bill martin has been tracking the conditions down south and joins us now with a look ahead. bill. >> yeah, the story has been these winds. they're going to last another night. we're looking at winds that are going to be blowing tonight. well right now we've got winds up in the 15 to 25 mile an hour range up in the hills. the focus of this wind event, this red flag warning is mainly malibu north, which is kind of out of the palisades but still breezy in that area. winds really pick up overnight into tomorrow afternoon. this is when the winds will be the strongest, and you notice it kind of comes out here towards oxnard. ventura not so much down here towards the palisades. so the temperatures are in the low 60s. humidities are in the low teens, and the wind gusts could get up to 50, 60 miles an hour or even more. and that is going to happen overnight tonight into tomorrow afternoon. and then contours go away. it's done for a while. and give folks give the folks down there a chance to mop some things up. but in the meantime, it's another windy night. and everybody's on e

. >> and with that, we do want to turn to our chief meteorologist, bill martin, to talk about these conditions down south. and we know the wind is starting to pick up. and man, they just want to know when it's all going to be over. and they can just, you know, start those red phase and those red flag warnings last into wednesday. >> so this windy condition, this this dry fuel, this this lack of rain is causing nothing but problems. and bay area, we can kind of relate to what's going on down there right now. because before the oakland hills fire became the oakland hills fire, there was a fire the night before they put it out, they mopped it up. they had it pretty much contained. but there's always hotspots. and those hotspots erupted. this is the oakland hills fire in the middle of the night when the winds came up. so now you've got two. we've got more than that. you got three really large fires, some spot fires as well. you've got an average of about 15% containment or 20% containment on these fires, leaving 80% of the fires not contained, meaning that hotspots could erupt. and that's that's m
