we will speak with bill mckibben of 350.org. this is "democracy now!," democracynow.org, the war and peace report. i'm amy goodman. a new report has revealed the united states has a secret drone base inside saudi arabia. according to the new york times, the cia first used the base in 2011 to kill the muslim cleric and u.s. citizen anwar al awlaki in yemen. the revelation came two days before a senate hearing to confirm counterterrorism advisor john brennan as director of the cia. brennan is a former cia station chief in saudi arabia who reportedly worked closely with the saudis to gain approval for the remote base. the news comes a day after nbc news published a secret justice department memo outlining the obama administration's legal rationale for assassinating u.s. citizens overseas even when there is no intelligence indicating the targeted individual is engaged in an active plot to attack the u.s. on tuesday, white house press secretary jay carney was asked about the assassination program. this is part of his response. >> we have a knowledge united

joining us is bill mckibben environmentalist founder of 350.org .r your time tonight. >> great to be here. >> john: what will he talk about tonight. >> the real litmus test for the environmental movement is whether or not he's willing to turn down this keystone pipeline, willing to say here's some carbon we're going to leave in the ground. the oil industry is leaning on him very hard. the petroleum institute said the day after the election that he had an implicit promise that keystone will be built. we'll find out but there are a lot of citizen who is will have their say this week, not just the president here in washington. >> john: i agree with you, bill, but more and more citizens i talk to seem to think that keystone is a done deal. is there any chance the president might still block the pipeline? or does it look like he's going to give in to the oil industry on this one? >> we'll find out. we'll have the largest climate rally on sunday. we're expecting upwards of 20,000 people on the mall. they'll mostly be there because they're upset and outrag

. >> bill mckibben, the founder of 350.org says approving the pipeline would be akin to lighting a carbonb that would cause irreparable harm and you have republicans like senator ted cruise that expressed skepticism climate change even exists. does that kind of talk actually hurt supporters? >> i don't think it is relevant. steve pointed out and i agree, this is about jobs primarily and the president has to make a decision about where does he side here? does he side with radical environmentalists or with the aflcio and other unions that recognize this would create 20,000 middle income wage earning jobs and that's -- >> let me doubleback for a minute. what is radical about the fact they point out the earth's nine warmest years ever have occurred since 2000, that we know this kind of oil causes more carbon dioxide emissions and a dirtier process than other ways of getting oil, so why do you say that? >> well, it is not a dirtier process. it has gone through three separate independent environmental constituted auto he is that show the entire pipeline is safe and half already in existence. th
