bill de blasio said flat out, this is not portland. meanwhile, in portland overnight, what started as peaceful protests once again later erupted with pockets of violence between officers and protesters there. nbc's erin mclaughlin remains on duty for us there in portland. nbc's tom winter is here with me in the studio in new york city. erin, i'll start with you. walk us through the latest that you're seeing on the ground there in portland and the federal government's presence there. >> reporter: hey, craig. well, according to a senior administration official, the federal government and the state government here in oregon are currently in negotiations for federal agents to withdraw from the federal courthouse in exchange for state and local police to come in and protect federal property. now, that is, again, according to a senior administration official. the president a short while ago at the white house was asked about that. this is what he had to say. >> we're not leaving until they have secured their city. we told the governor, we told the mayor, secure your city. if they don't secure their city soon, we have no choice, we're going to have to go in and clean it out. >> reporter: now, we have yet to hear from
