and it's great to see bill murray get slapped that many times. when we put just the years on the screen, you know -- it is not -- it's not been by any means a close call. when you actually look at what happens when voters turn out in the polls, the electoral college basically dragged several republicans over the finish line, then they got to name supreme court justices on top of that. what does this very simple chart tell you? if this is a surprise to people in the beltway, why? why do people not know our recent history? >> the thing that's amazing is these democratic ideas are popular. choice is popular. legalizing marijuana is popular. these are popular ideas. i think republicans have a handful of really bad ideas. then they have a candidate who has 92-plus counts, felony counts, against him. so i do think there really is -- this is not really a choice. i would say the other thing that i think, when i think about this lie the supreme court told us, i think about, you know, when they overturned roe. they said this was going to be states' rights.

guest: this is a groundhog day, getting a lot of bill murray movie references from my editors in thet couple of days. this is that repeating syndrome. we were just here five weeks, six weeks ago? september 20 8, 29, 30th. at that point, ivory the did think we were going to shut down. it seemed that kevin mccarthy had no choice but to relent to his far right wing and shut the government down, or else he was going to lose his job. what we didn't realize was that kevin mccarthy either was too naive and didn't realize he was going to lose his job, or that he was genuinely willing to lose his job over keeping government open and passing what they call a clean cr, a simple resolution that says government stays open at current funding levels. so now there are some other conservatives that are saying let's try to get some tuna policies. let's get something about border security and tack it onto this to keep government open. all of those options were pursued in late september and they all failed in spectacular fashion. there was a bill that mccarthy advance that would have kept the government

i want to thank the good work of chair murray, vice chair collins, and all the appropriators. passing these appropriations bills today is not just terrific news for the country, but an affirmation of what i have said since the start of the year, the only way to get things done in divided government is bipartisanship. the house is going through a futile exercise of passing partisan appropriation bills thats have no input or support from democrats. they're going nowhere. the house ought to learn its lesson. the speaker ought to understand that the 30 hard-right people should not be dictating what the entire house or entire country does. those bills are filled with poison pills, they break the agreement and cut below the agreement we made when we wanted to avoid the debt from being not fulfilled, and they're nowhere. on the other hand, the senate has bipartisan bills, and that is the real difference here. sooner or later, the house and the new speaker will learn the lesson -- if you don't do it bipartisan, it ain't getting done. the senate has been a strong model for how bipartisanship can work, even amidst deep d
