earnings season, bill rhodes, the president and ceo still with us. ty it is we are looking at fundamentals and corporate earnings. bill: the earnings are very important this go around, vis-a-vis how the economy is going in the united states and europe. we had all the big banks announced, but the european banks as mentioned here are still to come. deutsche bank, ubs and others. we will see how that goes. we have had tremendous volatility in the price of oil and gas. we will have to see how the major oil companies in that yet it sates and europe come through here. getting back to china, which is a big importer of oil and gas, the price of oil and gas is very important for china. there is some people who feel china has stockpiled quite a bit on the oil side and may actually cut back on their imports. it will be interesting to see how that goes and basically to see if they decide they will cut back on exports from the united states to china. all of this is tied in with the so-called trade war which we are looking at. the negative implications of the trade

as i do, it's very important for us in rhode island to celebrate our role in this important legislation, because one of the original authors of the medicare billwas representative amy foran of cumberland, rhode island. he served for 22 years. he served with great distinction. he was passionate about health care and about building this program. he was one of the original groups of the members of congress who got together and designed the medicare program. and when it came time to pass it in 1965, it was rhode island congressman john fogerty of providence who was then the chair of the house appropriation subcommittee for labor, health, education, and welfare. and so between one of the original authors of the legislation and one of the key chairmen supporting the legislation, there was a lot that rhode island did to accomplish these wonderful goals. so it gives me particular pride as a member of the rhode island delegation to come here for the medicare-medicaid-senator wyden birthday party. i'm really glad to have the chance to do it. these programs provide health insurance coverage to over half a million people in my state. that's half the state

bill cohen was one of those republicans of maine. hamilton fish of new york. we've talked about it. there's this legend about how barry goldwater and hugh scott and john rhodest down to the white house to tell nixon the support wasn't there anymore, but that was august 6th, i think, august 5th. and one of the things -- and i think this is worth everybody remembering -- is, about politics and law moving differently -- things do at some point start to snowball. and what happened for nixon in july of '74 was the house judiciary committee under rodino, who was doing everything he could to be quite fair about it and move with some deliberation. remember, in the anniversay of this, the supreme court said that nixon had to turn over the tapes. and of those tapes was the great smoking gun tape where nixon actually says, we're going to use the cia to block the fbi from investigating the break-in. it led to the obstruction charge. and insofar as there is if not a parallel at least one of mark twain's historical rhymes, it doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes, i do think what we saw this week in trumpland was the beginnings maybe even the middle of what an obstruction c
