bill russell died today at the age of 88. russell first came onto the national scene as a member of the usf. dawn's born in louisiana. his family moved to oakland during world war two clemens high school graduate led the dons to the championship in both 1955. and 56. russell was drafted by the boston celtics in 1956, the second player taken over with the celtics, russell established himself as one of the dominant players in the game winning 11 nba championships nine as a player to as a player coach. russell was the first african american head coach in the league and five times mvp. dating back to his days at usf. russell had always been an advocate for civil rights. among his many examples of activism. he was part of the cleveland summit in 1967 surrounded here by jim brown, kareem abdul jabbar and others in support of muhammad ali. in his later years , russell was the coach of the seattle supersonics in sacramento kings. he was inducted into the basketball hall of fame and in 2011 received the presidential medal of freedom. t
