earlier today, police chief bill scott renewed his push for more help from the city dealing with this problem. as tim johns explains, it includes revisiting city laws regarding surveillance camera footage and doing something about the department's staffing shortages. >> following his one-on-one sit down with abc 7 news insider film a tear, bill scott once again asked the city to help fight crime. one of his biggest requests is allowing police access to surveillance camera footage. >> we did not have access or the ability to look at it and call out license plate numbers and suspect descriptions in real-time. >> san francisco law only allows sfpd to review footage after an event occurs. except in certain situations. >> think about that, it really hampers our ability to do what we need to do. >> concerns over privacy have driven the city laws regarding this issue. something chief scott understands. but despite the worry, san francisco's mayor says the city has to be willing to look at possibly amending the laws as they currently stand. >> definitely is a conversation that needs to be had

so has police chief bill scott. obviously action will be taken.t concrete things do you think should happen? rodney: i think the mayor and chief scott have done a great job in response to these particular incidents, setting up a command post. for all of us whether we are business owners or employees or consumers, having the police presence is very important. knowing that they are watching out for us, watching out for each other, having the streets crowded with other shoppers and other employees is really important to look out for each other. so i applaud what the police department is doing. i know they could use more resources. the chamber of commerce will be absolutely supportive of more resources for law enforcement, and for the use of technology potentially to help solve some of these crimes and deter them kristen:. kristen: we do have the technology available, right? there are license plate readers and facial recognition, but i believe the board of supervisors, we made a conscious supervision to not employ those technologies that are available

we put together an organized retail crime working group where we asked chief bill scott and the sheriff and the chamber of commerce and council of district merchants and many organized labor, united food and commercial workers that represent life front line workers to join and come up with ideas. from that working group we were able to get consensus building off the success and our programs where officers are hired on the retailer's dime to supply extra security and what we heard the demand out strips the supply of available officers for this program the pending program. we appreciate the work that chief scott has done. again, i think it's over the work we've done in the last year and commitment and focus they re-dedicated resources to the program and put a lieutenant in charge and added additional ways of monitoring the program to make sure it's being assigned not just based on where officers want to go but where the highest demand and need is based on criminal activity and the supply of those officers still falls short. that's how we were able to put forward this program together whic
