bill weir with us now. bill, thank you. i can't believe we're already at season finale. >> i know, it flew by, didn't it? >> it did. yeah. okay. talk to me about the everglades. what stuck with you the most? what was most impressionable with you? >> this episode really surprised me. i went in with such low expectations. we think we know what the ever eve everglades are about. it looks like a squishy waste land of stuff that wants to bite you but when you get out in the middle of it with max stone, amazing wildlife photographer, you realize it is a web of life unlike any other, not in america but in the world. there's manatees, panthers, crocodiles, alley gate oigatora representation of life. we can't trash entire ecosystems without paying the price. half of the everglades is dead and half is on life support. in the '50s it was dredged and drained in order to turn florida into a paradise. all of the drinking water comes from under the aquifers under those glades. now we're spending billions to try to put it back the way it w

bill weir discovers a nonnative species is now threatening the wetlands. >> reporter: lack of clean water one threat to the glades. like most wild places in the age of man, another big struggle involves protecting native species from destructive exotic species. where did they come from do they think? >> a lot of them were imported in. >> reporter: bill booth is a fireman, outdoorsman and part-time python hunter. >> people want an exotic pet. they get tired of them or they get too big and they'll come to the everglades and dump them. >> reporter: some guess there are over 100,000 of them out there. others argue much less. there's no debate that this six-foot gator was swallowed hole by a python that later burst. florida held an open python hunt. >> you had 1,600 people that thought they wanted to come in and hunt pythons. they have ar-15 in full fatigues and had no idea what they were doing or where they were going. >> reporter: how do you hunt a python? >> you just grab them. you just grab them. >> reporter: just grab them. like this. >> what if they eat you? >> they can unhinge their jaw
