bill whittaker reports for wjz.en recovered and three others were saved. >> reporter: it was a dramatic coast guard rescue. three sailors, lifted to safety after clinging to jagged outcroppings, off the coast of san francisco, holding on for their lives. they were three of the eight- person crew on the low-speed chase. this 38-foot racing yacht, competing in a round-trip race from the san francisco yacht club to the rugged islands. a rocky wildlife refuge. >> coast guard, petty officer second petty class, levi green. >> swept people. and the rest of the crew turned the vessel around. and they got hit by another wave, which knocked them into the rocks. >> reporter: the coast guard launched boats, planes and helicopters to the rescue, 27 miles offshore. pulled from the water, the body of mark cassen, an artist who loved to paint scenes of sailing. >> the racers on the boats are experienced crewmembers. >> reporter: ed lynch, director of the san francisco yacht club says this is the first major accident in the 107 year

now, as bill whittaker reports for wjz, the loyal dog is back home. >> there's friendship. there's this. this black labrador, watching over the body of her friend, killed outside the streets of l.a. refusing to leave her side, even as cars whizzed by. moved by the sight, eric renagga called animal control and put up cones to divert traffic. >> knowing one of the dogs was still alive got to me. it was a tear jerker. he shot this video. friends posted it on you tube, where this somber vigil went viral, drawing hundreds of thousands of hits. the loyal dog was taken to an animal shelter. she had no tags, no name. so the staff called her "grace." >> i think everybody on this planninget that has seen -- planet that has seen that video, we all want to be like that. if we don't want to be like that, we want a dog like that. because that is the coolest dog ever. >> reporter: eric renagga thought so. he asked to adopt grace. monday, after the five-day waiting period, after she had been spayed and given shots, eric came to take grace home. only to learn her name is maggie. her owners
