>> speaking of billie jean king, 1968 ushered in the open era in tennis.rior to 1968, professional in the could not compete prestigious grand slam tournaments. only amateurs could compete because there wasn't any money --olved in professional amateurs couldn't take money in order to be amateurs. this thrust a spotlight on the inequality of pay between men and women, especially in tennis, but i feel like it filtered through to other -- and it's still going on today as we know, but billie jean became a great advocate for getting better pay for women in tennis, but also sports in general. she actually organized a group of tennis players to boycott attornment where the men were getting paid at least two times more than the women. they boycotted that turn them then started their own for genius limbs circuit tour -- tournament and then started virginia slims circuit tour. we have great paraphernalia from that in this collection. while she certainly was not the first person to be talking about this, i think it got bought -- brought to the forefront around it cont

some of the tennis world's brightest stars started out or hone their games through including billy jean king, brad gilbert, peanut louie, all of whom are local supporters of this project. after decades of active use, the center is showing its age and it's experiencing a decline in activity because of current conditions. courts are too closely spaced together and are badly crafted, uneven. there is no lighting for nighttime play. the clubhouse and courts are not ada accessible. the clubhouse is too small to accommodate robust programming among other concerns. the proposed project includes 17 new full size courts in clusters or easy axe size with pathways for community members to gather and view play. the first dedicated pickle ball court, a recreational trend popular among -- >> did you say pickle ball. >> yes. >> i want to make sure i heard you correctly. >> it's located along the northern edge at court 18. it's that baby court at the top of the screen there. a new 7800 square foot clubhouse will replace the existing 29 square foot building and a sunken feature court is outside the clubhouse

and my friend billie jean king and others were there part of the program, and the title of the series was dare to compete. and so when i -- i was introduced by this young woman, she was, i think, the captain of the volleyball team or basketball team. she was, you know, very fit and happy and terrific looking and gave a really nice introduction of me, and so i went up and, you know, i had to look up, and she had to bend down -- [laughter] so i said, well, that was wonderful, thank you for that very generous introduction. and then she said to me, tear to compete -- dare to compete, mrs. clinton, dare to compete. [laughter] [applause] and i felt like all of the, you know, all of the worry that i'd been having, you know, i had to face them. and i'd been somebody who had encouraged women to run for office, i'd supported a lot of women candidates, i was really proud of them, and now this young woman was telling me that. so i eventually i decided to run. it was a great, it was a great campaign. and i loved being a senator for eight years. and then something similar started happening around 2
