dine somerville is an associate professor of history at binghampton university in new york, she teaches courses in 19th century u. s. history, the american south, women's history and the history of sexuality. she's recently published great grace in the 19th century south, and that was released by the university of north carolina press. she's also authored numerous scholarly articles, most recently, a burden too heavy to bear, the trauma, suicide, and confederate soldiers. this piece earned the john t. hubble prize for the best article in the journal's civil war history. so we'll begin with diane, presenting a paper on her work, and then, of course, we have our handle to comment. diane.
